Executive<br />

141 This s<strong>in</strong>gle-piece wheel is ma<strong>in</strong>ly used with tubeless tyres. Figures 25 <strong>and</strong> 26<br />

show typical wheels used on heavy goods <strong>vehicle</strong>s. Figure 27 is typical of a type<br />

used on light commercial <strong>vehicle</strong>s. Tyre failure is occasionally experienced when<br />

<strong>in</strong>flat<strong>in</strong>g tyres of this type <strong>and</strong> can lead to a severe air blast. Safety measures<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude those for car tyres but <strong>in</strong>clude the additional precautions outl<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong><br />

paragraphs 142 to 144.<br />

142 Use a restra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

device when you are<br />

<strong>in</strong>flat<strong>in</strong>g above 15 psi,<br />

such as:<br />

n<br />

n<br />

n<br />

a strong, firmly-<br />

secured cage (see<br />

Figure 29). Consider<br />

l<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g this with mesh<br />

to reta<strong>in</strong> debris. For<br />

fixed <strong>in</strong>stallations it is<br />

helpful to mark the<br />

<strong>safety</strong> exclusion zone<br />

on the workshop<br />

floor as a rem<strong>in</strong>der to<br />

staff (see Figure 24);<br />

a secured horizontal stool <strong>and</strong> <strong>associated</strong> clamp<strong>in</strong>g mechanism; or<br />

a portable restra<strong>in</strong>t.<br />

These are available<br />

<strong>in</strong> the form of a<br />

lightweight cover<br />

(see Figure 28) that<br />

encloses the tyre<br />

<strong>and</strong> wheel rim <strong>and</strong><br />

may be particularly<br />

advantageous for<br />

off-site <strong>repair</strong>s. With<br />

a bag restra<strong>in</strong>t, <strong>in</strong> the<br />

event of an explosion<br />

the fabric exp<strong>and</strong>s<br />

<strong>and</strong> dissipates the<br />

blast while conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

projected debris.<br />

Fabric devices may<br />

need to be replaced<br />

after an explosion.<br />
