of escape where the risk<br />

assessment identifies the<br />

need (for example, where<br />

escape may be blocked<br />

off by the parked <strong>vehicle</strong><br />

or for pits over 9 m long).<br />

226 A significant number of <strong>in</strong>juries occur from people<br />

slipp<strong>in</strong>g on the access steps. Provide a h<strong>and</strong>rail where<br />

possible, for example a permanent h<strong>and</strong>rail may be<br />

appropriate on sunken pits or low-level h<strong>and</strong>rails below<br />

floor level. Removable h<strong>and</strong>rails may be an option for<br />

other <strong>in</strong>stallations, as <strong>in</strong> Figure 65.<br />
