have been caused by<br />

operators try<strong>in</strong>g to make<br />

adjustments or <strong>repair</strong>s<br />

to <strong>vehicle</strong>s on roll<strong>in</strong>g<br />

roads. Restrict use of all<br />

roll<strong>in</strong>g roads to tra<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

<strong>and</strong> competent operators<br />

<strong>and</strong> prevent unauthorised<br />

access to areas where<br />

test<strong>in</strong>g is carried out.<br />

15 It is important to<br />

take precautions when<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g with this type of<br />

Fit guards at the<br />

prevented.<br />

When it is not <strong>in</strong> use,<br />

isolate brake-test<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> the grip of<br />

the runn<strong>in</strong>g surfaces<br />

of the brake tester<br />

to reduce the need to dry tyres <strong>and</strong> test surfaces. Do not try to dry them while<br />

they are <strong>in</strong> motion or carry out other test<strong>in</strong>g or adjustments on the <strong>vehicle</strong> while<br />

the roll<strong>in</strong>g road is mov<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Where brake-test<strong>in</strong>g equipment is sited over a pit, people should be prevented<br />

from enter<strong>in</strong>g the pit while a test is runn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

16 Some manufacturers have developed roll<strong>in</strong>g brake-test<strong>in</strong>g equipment (where<br />

the road wheels typically run at less than 5 km/h) that will also perform high-speed<br />

operations such as tachograph calibration (typically over 50 km/h). Before <strong>in</strong>stall<strong>in</strong>g<br />

such dual-purpose equipment <strong>in</strong>to exist<strong>in</strong>g roll<strong>in</strong>g brake-test<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>stallations, do an<br />

assessment to identify additional precautions for protect<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st risks from highspeed<br />

runn<strong>in</strong>g, such as:<br />

protect<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st material be<strong>in</strong>g ejected from tyres;<br />

segregation of the area <strong>and</strong> prevent<strong>in</strong>g access to people <strong>in</strong> the vic<strong>in</strong>ity;<br />

entry <strong>and</strong> exit routes of <strong>vehicle</strong>s under test;<br />

exposure to noise <strong>and</strong> exhaust emissions.<br />
