Haunted House
doubles in size
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
More than double the frightful fun awaits those who visit “The
Misfit Haunt,” Mount Sterling’s haunted house.
For the third straight year, Masonic Lodge 269, 54 N. London
St., is hosting a Halloween-themed extravaganza. The star attraction
is the transformed lodge, but plenty of other entertainment is
planned, too, including children’s games, a costume contest, music,
dancing, and food.
Haunted house hours are 6-11 p.m. Oct. 28-29 and 2-4 p.m. Oct.
30. Admission is free; donations are accepted. This year, the lodge
welcomes sponsorship and on-site support from the Mount Sterling
Chamber of Commerce and Carnage Haunt of Columbus.
According to Tom Corbin, a member of Lodge 269 and one of the
event organizers, Mount Sterling’s haunted house is making a name
for itself around the state, landing on multiple lists of haunted attractions.
This year alone, the Mount Sterling listing has garnered
40,000 hits on one of those statewide sites. Corbin said one of the
features that makes Mount Sterling’s offering stand out is the free
admission.
“We do it to give back to the village and surrounding area,” he
said, adding that the goal is to expand the haunted house into a
Halloween festival spanning more days and including more activities.
Expansion has already started this year in the form of new
spaces to explore in the haunted house. Participants will enter
through the front of the lodge, navigate
through a maze of hallways and rooms featuring
a zombie-infested swamp, creepy
dolls, a butcher shop, and more. Then, they
will make their way outside to a cemetery,
chainsaws, more zombies, and “all kinds of
special stuff,” Corbin explained.
That’s where the fun ended the past two
years. Not this year. After surviving the
cemetery, participants will go back inside to
a different part of the building with more
scare-filled rooms.
“Also new this year are lasers, a lot of
sound synthesizers, and at least three
smoke areas that we didn’t have last year,”
Corbin said.
With the expansion, the haunt requires
more volunteer actors—36 at any given time
as compared to 21 last year. Organizers welcome
anyone who would like to help out,
whether in acting roles, makeup, crowd control,
or concessions.
Speaking of concessions, food options include
kettle corn, hamburgers, hotdogs,
chips, soda, wassail, and possibly bean soup.
There is a charge for concessions.
The food, a deejay, children’s games, and
cornhole will be located outside in front of
the lodge. A bounce house is planned if the
weather cooperates.
Having a great time in the straw bed are Plain City residents Arthur Lewis and his younger sister, Annie.
Overseeing the fun was Cory DiCarro of Hilliard, who said it took children “quite a while” to warm up to the
potential of the straw bed. “They would stand there at first, unsure of it, but soon it became like WrestleMania
where they would jump off the bales and into the bed,” he said.
Living it up at
Shekinah Christian School in Plain City hosted its
first Fall Celebration for the community on Oct. 15.
“I am so glad we were able to offer something for
the entire community to enjoy,” said Amber Purdy,
the school’s advancement director.
After completing the 60-foot long inflated obstacle
course, Hope Hirchak, 7, gets ready to
race to the beginning to do it all over again.
DD Board seeks renewal of 1-mill operating levy
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
The Madison County Board of Developmental
Disabilities (MCBDD) is seeking renewal
of a 1-mill, five-year property tax levy
for operation and maintenance of programs
for people with disabilities.
The levy generates approximately
$924,000 per year and represents about onethird
of MCBDD’s local tax revenue. The
cost to the taxpayer is $20.21 per year per
$100,000 property valuation. If the levy is
renewed, the cost will remain the same.
“Our system is unique compared to a lot
of other (social service) systems. We serve
individuals from the day they are born to
the day they pass away. We serve them
their entire lives,” said Susan Thompson,
MCBDD superintendent.
Those services include:
• Service Coordination—Staff members
help individuals and their teams to develop
a plan that allows the individuals to live according
to their needs and wishes. MCBDD
staffers serve as the main point of contact
and coordination between the person receiving
services and the entities providing services
and supports.
• Early Intervention: Staff works with parents
of infants and toddlers with disabilities
to enhance children’s learning through a collaborative,
home- and community-based
system.
• Preschool: Fairhaven School serves
nearly 200 students ages 3 to 5 years old.
• Transition: MCBDD collaborates with
local school districts and the Educational
Service Center to help individuals with disabilities
who are ages 14-22 with the transition
out of school. Services include career
exploration, job training, and more.
“You really need skills to be successful
with that transition,” Thompson said. “Our
staff does a fantastic job working with that
age group.”
• Community Employment: MCBDD helps
individuals with disabilities to find meaningful,
fulfilling employment that meets
their needs and desires.
“So many of our folks are working, paying
taxes, and giving back to our community,”
Thompson said. “It is such a valuable
thing to the individuals we serve, to be out
in the community and standing side by side
with you and I as we do our jobs.”
• Health Service Coordination: Staff members
help individuals with information
about medication, medical providers, and
possible interventions for existing conditions,
as well as health education and training
for individuals, parents and staff.
• Advocacy: MCBDD sponsors the Tiger
Advocacy Group, a group of adults with a
wide range of abilities who meet monthly to
empower and support one another.
“They are doing amazing things,” Thompson
said of the group.
• Transportation: This service is open to
individuals with disabilities, local agencies,
and all Madison County residents.
MCBDD’s vehicles transport passengers to
and from many different locations depending
on their needs. Most of the vehicles are
wheelchair accessible. Drivers are First Aid
and CPR certified.
• Special Olympics/Recreation: The Madison
County Tigers participate in a variety of
sports. Recreation services also include activities
like day and weekend trips, movies,
crafts, festivals and museums.
• Residential Support: Staff works directly
with individuals to make sure they have
what they need to live in the community in a
way that promotes their health and welfare.
The Chamber of Commerce is hosting a
costume contest for all ages on Oct. 30. The
children’s category is set for 2:30 p.m. followed
by the adult category at 3 p.m. Prizes
will go to the winners.
The haunted house is open to all ages.
Corbin noted that staff stationed at the start
and finish of the haunt will tell the actors to
go easy on any group that requests a tamer
version of the experience. New this year, organizers
will hand out glow sticks to children
who do not want to be scared by actors
as they walk through.
For more information or to volunteer,
contact Tom Corbin at (614) 530-3132.
• Adult Day Programming: Services include
help with daily living skills and activities,
personal care, vocational support, and
community-based employment support.
• Non-Medical Transportation: This service
provides transportation to day services, employment
services, or places of employment.
Thompson said MCBDD has enjoyed ongoing
support from the community for this
wide range of services.
“We truly appreciate every voter in Madison
County. We could not do what we do and
take care of the people we serve if the community
wasn’t so supportive of us,” she said.
Thompson praised the MCBDD staff for
doing good work.
“My firm belief is that we pass a levy
every day by the quality of services we provide.
If you take care of people and provide
good service, the taxpayers will support
you,” she said.
Hospital plans Lights of Love
Loved ones will be celebrated during the
holiday season, Nov. 15-Dec. 3, with Madison
Health Auxiliary’s Lights of Love. The
opportunity to recognize loved ones continues
with several donation options.
Outdoor evergreen trees, located in the
hospital’s main entrance driveway, will be
strung with holiday white lights. Pillar candles,
available in three different sizes, will
light the hospital’s new concourse and lobby
each evening. A large tree full of individual
lights will decorate the main lobby through
the holiday season. All of these donation options
may be reserved in the name of a loved
one, and signage can be viewed from the
windows both inside and outside the main
entrance of Madison Health. Tribute opportunities
for loved ones may be reserved all
season long.
of support for this event is always humbling,
and we are thankful for the
generosity of our donors.”
As thanks is given for family and friends
during the holiday season, Madison Health
invites the public to attend the tree and candle
lighting ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 15
at the hospital’s main entrance. Following
the ceremony, the hospital is hosting a family-friendly
Tolles working toward master facilities plan
Tolles Career & Technical Center in
Plain City has selected the architecture, interiors
and engineering firm Fanning
Howey to develop a master facilities plan.
The Tolles school board approved Fanning
Howey’s contract at its Sept. 15 meeting.
“We at Tolles are excited to begin this
master planning process on our 1974 facility,”
said Todd Hoadley, Ph.D., Tolles
CEO/superintendent. “After visiting several
schools over the summer, we are confident
that the professionals at Fanning Howey
are uniquely qualified to guide us through
this important undertaking.
“It is our mission at Tolles to provide our
students with a world-class career and technical
education. Ensuring that our careertech
learning labs are up to date and mirror
the workplace of local industry is vital to the
achievement of our mission.”
As part of the master plan, Fanning
Howey will evaluate how the existing building
must change to meet the future needs of
career-technical training in central Ohio.
The firm will use educational visioning, facilities
assessments and stakeholder engagement
sessions to develop multiple
master plan options. These options will result
in a final master plan recommendation
that will be made to the school board.
“Career and technical education is the
lifeblood of the local economy,” says Fanning
Howey project executive Jenn Fuller, AIA.
“We look forward to working with educators
and business leaders to develop facility solutions
that will lead to a strong local workforce
for decades to come.”
Fanning Howey was the architect for the
award-winning Tri Star Career Compact in
Celina, Ohio. The firm has also worked with
Vanguard Technology Center, Sentinel
Technology Center, Collins Career Center
and Delaware Area Career Center. Fanning
Howey’s Columbus-area clients include
Hilliard City Schools and Olentangy Local
Schools.
Master planning efforts began at the end
of September 2022.
In Ireland
Members of the Madison County Senior
Center took a nine-day trip to Ireland in
September. A total of 38 people traveled
with the group, visiting Guinness Brewery,
Waterford Crystal, St. Patrick
Cathedral, Blarney Castle, the Ring of
Kerry, Trinity College to see the Book of
Kells, and more. They also traveled to
the Cliffs of Moher, but it was too rainy
and foggy to see the cliffs; otherwise,
by all accounts, the trip was a wonderful
adventure. The motorcoach driver
and tour guide taught the group Irish
folk songs while driving through the
countryside and answered many questions
about Ireland throughout the trip.
Helping farmers deal
with stress on the job
With Madison County being a rural
community, most of us probably know at
least one farmer. Weather challenges, current
input prices and supply chain issues
have stress levels running high on many
farms. While we all deal with stress fairly
regularly, difficult times in farming can
cause an excessive amount of stress that
is hard for someone to process.
Most farms are family businesses that
have their own stressors, such as being
able to provide for one’s family and keeping
a farm that has been in the family for
several generations afloat. Also, many factors
that affect farms are ones over which
farmers have no control. I mentioned
weather and commodity prices, which are
the big ones, but farmers also deal with
disease and pest issues, working with
family, consumer perceptions, machinery
breakdown and so on.
The following warning signs may indicate
that a loved one is experiencing an
undue amount of stress. Being able to assess
the situation accurately may help
prevent a more serious situation. Jinnifer
Ortquist with Michigan State University
Extension outlines the warning signs of
stress in “How to Talk with Farmers
Under Stress,” available at MSU’s Managing
Farm Stress website.
1. Look for changes in emotions such as
a decrease in energy or show of enthusiasm
for the future, depression or loss of
humor.
2. Changes in attitudes or cognitive
skills—such as frustration over small
things or having trouble making decisions—could
indicate high stress levels.
3. Changes in behavior that indicate an
issue might show up in missed meetings
with coworkers, friends or businesses, difficulty
sleeping or becoming quieter than
usual.
4. All of these can culminate into
changes on the farm through a lack of care
for animals or crops, themselves or carelessness
in general.
What can you do to help? Being there
to listen, and I mean really listen, can go
a long way in helping the person deal with
and process what they are going through.
Ortquist suggests using the following
questions and statements while listening:
• I hear you saying ____ (repeat back
the main concerns the farmer is expressing).
• This sounds like a lot to manage.
How are you coping with this? (or, What
are you doing to take care of yourself?)
• It sounds like the current situation is
guest column
By Amanda Douridas
very difficult. What can I do to support
you?
• These are some tough challenges.
How can I help?
• Would it be helpful if we work together
on an action plan for how to manage
your concerns?
• Every situation is different. In a similar
situation on another farm, they tried
____. What do you think about that?
• Are there other people who have been
helpful or supportive when times have
been tough in the past? Are any of those
people able to help now?
Ortquist also recommends showing empathy
rather than sympathy. The difference
here is, when practicing empathy,
you make an effort to understand what
the person is going through and then talk
to them about ideas that may help them
work through their feelings or the situation.
For farmers, this could be helping
them come up with a long-term plan to
keep the farm in working order or recommending
someone who can help with this
goal. This may be another farmer who has
been through a similar situation, financial
advisors, or the Extension Office.
If conflict arises, remain calm and continue
to listen. Avoid placing blame on
anyone. Talk about what you are trying to
achieve and repeat statements back to the
farmer to ensure you understand what
they are saying.
Lastly, always follow up with the
farmer after your conversation and continue
to check in and listen. If you believe
the person is in eminent danger, directly
ask them if they have had thoughts of suicide.
This is uncomfortable but better than
the alternative. Call 911 and get help from
family and friends.
Time to stop kicking
the can down the road
“Kicking the can down the road”
This phrase gets used a lot. I think it’s letter
time we quit blaming others and realize we
no longer have a choice but to start to fix
station was a want and not a need.
things.
At a special finance committee meeting,
When the decision was made to have the
options were discussed and the city council
London Fire Department handle EMS services
in the city of London, it was known
members who were there felt the new police
station is a need and that the voters of London
would be more willing to support an in-
there would be a cost to do this. Personally,
I was in favor of taking care of our own, but
come tax increase if it was only for our
I was not in favor of how it happened. It’s
safety forces.
time to move on from the hurt feelings and
To me, there are two differences in how
take steps to make sure our fire department
this was approached. This time, the London
can still provide the services they have been
city council members, who have been elected
tasked to do.
by the voters, made a decision they felt was
The decision to pull out of the Madison
best for London. The second difference was
County Emergency Medical District (EMD)
realizing the community center was not supported.
meant property owners would no longer
have to pay the 3 mills of property taxes
Most of you are not aware that I was a
being collected for Madison EMD. City council
also decided to stop collecting the 1.4
dispatcher for the London Police Department
for 11 years. I was a dispatcher when
mills of property taxes that was directly
the police were moved into the building on
used to help fund the fire department.
East First Street, and it was never supposed
City council then decided to put another
to be a permanent location. It was probably
property tax on the ballot. It was smaller
the best solution at the time, but the world
than the 4.4 mills that were being paid and
has changed since then. We should be concerned
that it’s not a safe location for the po-
was set at 2 mills. It would have been
enough to cover the extra expenses the fire
lice officers, and, more importantly, it’s not
department expected to have. The voters of
safe for victims of a crime that are followed
London voted this down.
in by the person they are running from.
London Fire Chief Todd Eades advised
Many have suggested that the police
the city administration and city council that
move into the current city building. It’s not
he would try to keep the budget in check,
that simple, because when the world
and that he thought he could “make it work”
changed because of 9-11, the federal government
mandated that new police stations
for three years.
It’s now four years later, and the London
have safety measures to keep the police
Fire Department is looking at a deficit of
safe. The cost to make an old building safe
about $800,000 next year. The proverbial
is probably as much as a new building.
can was kicked down the road, as no new
It is time to start taking care of the issues
that have been ignored for years. I
initiatives were presented by council until
this year.
know there are many other issues, but we
The plan presented this past spring was
have to start somewhere. Many people have
a levy to provide additional funding for the
said this is not a good time. Unfortunately,
fire department, build a new police station,
there is never really a good time.
and build a new community center. This
I will be voting for the tax increase for
was defeated soundly. In discussions after
our safety forces. I hope you see the need to
the election, the feeling was that the community
center was seen as a want and not a Greg Eades
support it with your vote.
need. Some people also felt that the police London
He received the Community Star Award his
Joseph also was nominated by his teachers
When asked to name a school staff person
Hana Woodson.
“Mrs. Woodson inspires me
to do my best. She is the best
teacher I have had in high
Woodson said, “Joe is a genuinely
nice young man. His
humor and personality combined
with his determination
and work ethic make him a joy
to have in class. He is often
Joseph Osborn
overlooked because he is very
unassuming, yet he continues
to perform well.”
Joseph is planning to pursue a degree in
engineering at an Ohio college or university.
operations in Madison County more
than two years ago as the COVID-19 pandemic
worsened, is preparing to return this
winter and is looking for volunteers to help
restart the service.
The all-volunteer program provides free,
no-strings-attached income tax preparation
to anyone, but places emphasis on serving
every tax benefit to which they are entitled
and often save them a significant amount of
money.
Volunteers come from all walks of life. No
experience is required. Tax-Aide provides
throughout the tax season. For more
