October 2nd marked <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d<br />

anniversary of <strong>Wall</strong> Residences being<br />

a 100% ESOP company. October is<br />

also Employee Ownership Awareness<br />

M<strong>on</strong>th.<br />

ESOP stands for Employee Stock<br />

Ownership Program: a company’s<br />

employees own shares of its stock.<br />

The stock is sold back to <strong>the</strong> company<br />

when some<strong>on</strong>e leaves or retires,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> profits are paid out to employees<br />

as retirement benefits.<br />

October is ESOP M<strong>on</strong>th!<br />

<strong>Wall</strong> Residences was founded and<br />

owned by Jack <strong>Wall</strong> and Kamala<br />

Bauers. Jack and Kamala wanted to<br />

assure <strong>the</strong> company would fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong><br />

values and practices <strong>the</strong>y established,<br />

after <strong>the</strong>y retired. This may not have<br />

happened if <strong>Wall</strong> Residences had<br />

been sold to ano<strong>the</strong>r company.<br />

Some of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Wall</strong> Residences Employee Owners ga<strong>the</strong>red in Floyd at <strong>the</strong> Staff<br />

C<strong>on</strong>ference in September for training and networking.<br />

Establishing <strong>the</strong> ESOP was a win-win<br />

situati<strong>on</strong>! Employees carry <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

original company values of meaningful<br />

relati<strong>on</strong>ships, quality of life,<br />

creativity, innovati<strong>on</strong>, and pers<strong>on</strong>al<br />

growth for <strong>the</strong>mselves and <strong>the</strong> indi-<br />

viduals in our services. It’s w<strong>on</strong>derful<br />

for employees, who earn retirement<br />

benefits at no cost to <strong>the</strong>m. The people<br />

in our services benefit as well, with<br />

lower staff turnover due to <strong>the</strong> ESOP’s<br />

structure encouraging l<strong>on</strong>gevity.<br />
