Delivery update 

for Christmas 

and New Year 

Dear customers, 

As Christmas fast approaches, I am writing to outline our delivery schedules over the festive period. 

To ensure the requirements of all customers can be met, we offer a normal delivery service for the week 

commencing Monday 19th December. Please use this week as your bulk delivery, especially if your delivery 

is normally on a Monday. 

The office will close on Friday 23rd December at 12pm and will open again 

on Tuesday 27th December at 7.30am.

in telesales? Have you worked in any other

I have worked for the brewery for five years – 

four of those in telesales and one year as sales 

support. 

What is your role within telesales? Is there 

anything a bit different that you do that 

customers might not expect? 

We are the first port of call when a potential 

new account comes in and when they 

open a new account. We will always do an 

introductory call, send a welcome pack and 

email, and we then look after them for 11 weeks 

– having them on our diaries to call before we 

hand them over to their permanent telesales 

contact.

What do you enjoy most about your job? 

The brilliant team members I work alongside 

are always up for having a laugh and are always 

keen to support each other. You can often hear 

me and Lottie having a good sing-along to the

Yes, I live in Newquay, only 10 minutes away. 

What is your favourite drink? 

I enjoy a Tarquin’s Rhubarb & Raspberry with 

lemonade or an ice-cold Corona! 

What is your favourite St Austell Brewery 

beer? 

Big Job is my favourite. 

We ensure the service is consistent and that 

they are actually using their account with 

us, making sure all their pricing is correct 

and that they have all the point of sale they 

may need. There are two other people in the 

team, one who looks after the north area 

(North Devon up to South Wales) and another 

covering the south area (Newton Abbot up 

to Bournemouth). With regards to pricing 

enquiries, they also come to us.

Spending time with my partner (who works on 

the dray) and our two boys. I also absolutely 

love a good shopping trip followed by lunch in

50ml Edinburgh Raspberry Gin 

25ml simple syrup 

25ml lemon juice 

25ml raspberry purée 

Soda water 

Raspberries 

Method 

Add the 50ml of Edinburgh Raspberry Gin, 

simple syrup, lemon juice, and raspberry purée 

into a glass and stir. Add a handful of ice and top 

up with soda. Garnish with raspberries to serve. 

Ingredients 

50ml Jack Daniel’s Old No.7 

12.5ml honey 

12.5ml lemon juice 

100ml hot water 

1 cinnamon stick 

Method 

Pour 50ml of the Jack Daniel’s into a heavy mug. 

Add the honey, lemon juice and cinnamon stick. 

Top with hot water and stir.

Spiced Apple Winter Warmer 

Kraken Rum Quid Bite 

Ingredients 

60ml 6 O’Clock Damson Gin 

200ml spiced apple juice 

Orange wheel 

Cinnamon stick 

Star anise 

Method 

Infuse the apple juice by gently heating with 

your favourite winter spices for around 20 

minutes. Decant the infused apple juice into a 

heatproof glass or mug and top up with 50ml 

of damson gin. Garnish with an orange wheel, 

cinnamon stick, and star anise. 

Ingredients 

25ml Kraken Rum 

Hot mulled cider 

Cinnamon stick 

Apple slices 

Method 

Add 25ml Kraken rum to a glass, top up with hot 

mulled cider. Add a cinnamon stick and apple 

slices to garnish.

Looking towards Christmas this 

year, as the familiar chill returns to 

the air and the nights draw in, I find 

myself feeling slightly conflicted. 

I am a die-hard Christmas fan, 

excited from mid-October and 

disappointed when it’s time to 

deposit the tree out for collection 

each January, however, this year 

I’m mindful, many of us may not 

be feeling particularly optimistic. 

As cost-of-living concerns leave 

question marks around consumer 

confidence and festive booking 

numbers, making the most of peak 

season this year may be make or 

break for many on-trade outlets. 

It seems like a good opportunity 

to outline how getting the right 

proposition in front of customers 

can help to drive your margin up 

this December. Check out our

of fizz at lunch time can be a great 

way to drive up transaction values. 

We also know that whilst 

customers may be more careful

Guy Fawkes Night, also known as bonfire 

night, is an annual commemoration in 

the UK that marks the night that almost 

changed the nation’s history – the failure of 

the Gunpowder Plot against King James I in 

1605 by English Catholics, led by Guy Fawkes, 

Britain’s most infamous rebel, and Robert 

Catesby. 

The plot had intended to blow up the Parliament 

building and assassinate the king. A member of the 

group, however, betrayed them, and Guy Fawkes was 

arrested just before igniting the gunpowder. Since 

then, on the night of November 5th, people gather for 

bonfires and firework displays.

essentially fat and acidity so we need something that 

will cut through the fat and balance the acidity with 

white wines generally doing this better than reds. Of

Zinfandel Day 

November 16th 

The Zinfandel grape was discovered in the 

Mediterranean region around 6000 BC. 

In 1880, Primitivo, a close relative of the 

Zinfandel grape, was found in Italy. By 

1930, the Zinfandel production suffered 

greatly due to the Great Depression and 

prohibition. 

In the 1990s, Zinfandel Day was created to honour 

the famous, black-skinned grape and the outstanding 

wines it produces. We have a few in our portfolio – 

a team favourite is The True Zin from Puglia, Italy. 

Showcasing notes of cherry, jam, tobacco, and cocoa 

on the palate, it pairs well with red meats and goes 

down a treat while sat in front of the fire on a winter’s 

afternoon. (The Federalist from Lodi, California. A big 

red with smooth plum and spice notes on the palate.

Tempranillo Day 

November 10th 

Tempranillo Day is celebrated on the second 

Thursday of November every year. This year, 

it falls on November 10th. The Spanish word 

‘Temprano’ translates to ‘early,’ and Spain’s native 

Tempranillo grapes are called so because they 

are harvested early in the season. In 2011, the 

Tempranillo Advocates Producers and Amigos 

Society (TAPAS) celebrated the first Tempranillo 

Day with the aim of providing a way for people to 

add to the complexity of their wine drinking. 

Our Spanish wine portfolio is full of great 

examples of the Tempranillo grape. We suggest 

starting with Ermita Reserva, aged for a minimum 

of five years and minimum of two in oak. Santiago 

Ijaba has been making wines for over half a 

century and founded Bodegas Santalba (a fusion 

of his first and last name) in 1964. Joined by his 

son Roberto and his daughter Laura over the last 

decade, Roberto concentrates his winemaking 

expertise on the more modern styles of Rioja. 

Expect intense blackberry fruit on the palate and a 

perfect match with pork and game.

The traditional mince pie or 

christmas pudding are best loved with 

a dessert wine, Campbells Rutherglen 

Muscat. 

Campbells Rutherglen Muscat | Victoria, Australia 

Rutherglen Winery was founded in 1870, with Colin and 

Malcolm Campbell being the fifth generation now at the 

helm. The award-winning Campbells Rutherglen Muscat 

is made using the solera system, commonly associated 

with sherry production. The fruit is fortified with a natural 

grape spirit, like the port method, and aged over several 

years in the hot climate of inland Australia (which could be 

compared to the Madeira process of ageing.) 

A perfect partner to a mince pie (or two), filled to the 

brim with raisins, sultanas, currants, candied peel and the 

warmth of spice, washed down with flavours of coffee, 

caramel, vanilla, and butterscotch. It also goes down a treat 

with a cheeseboard and quince jelly. 

Festive Fact - mince pie, originally known as a ‘miched 

pie’, ‘mutton pie’ and not the sweet treat we know today, it 

used to be the main dish to adorn our Christmas table. 

The Christmas turkey and New 

Zealand’s Outnumbered Pinot Noir.

It may be white meat, but it’s a red wine that makes for 

one of the best pairings with turkey. The New World Pinot 

Noir is a lively young pinot with ripe cherry and plum fruit 

flavours. Bright, ripe and fragrant, the inviting bouquet 

shows dark fruit and floral characters with a subtle spicy 

complexity – an absolute winner for a Christmas roast 

turkey. 

Outnumbered Pinot Noir is sourced from beautiful 

vineyards situated in New Zealand’s south-eastern corner 

of the North Island, Wairarapa, where the fruit is well 

exposed so it can ripen properly. Their goal is to enhance 

the pure, natural flavours of the fruit, honouring the 

vineyard of a great wine region.

What a great way to start the traditional Christmas lunch 

offering – a real favourite ‘piggies in blankets’ accompanied 

by a glass of bubbles, and we have the perfect Prosecco 

Spumante for this occasion, whether performing its usual 

festive traditional role or with pre-meal nibbles. 

My choice of Prosecco, Ca’ Vescovo, is owned by the Zonin 

family who are one of the most historic wine producers in 

Italy, having been vintners since 1821 – that’s older than the 

brewery! The estate in Friuli, northern Italy, is blessed with an 

abundantly rich terroir and mild climate. 

This exceptional Prosecco stands out due to the must, 

which is the name given to the freshly pressed grape juice. 

It’s obtained by very soft pressing and undergoes an initial 

fermentation at a controlled temperature before being 

transferred into a pressurised stainless-steel tank, where the 

wine is given a sparkle using the traditional Charmat method. 

Festive Fact - April 24th is National Pigs in a Blanket 

Day. Pigs in blankets are not to be confused with devils on 

horseback (dried fruits stuffed with cheese or nuts, wrapped 

in bacon prosciutto or pancetta) or angels on horseback 

(oysters wrapped in bacon).

Château Potensac 

Bordeaux, France

Wines from Bordeaux are some of the most expensive 

wines in the world. The history, prestige, winemaking, 

and styles produced make it such an exciting region 

to explore. Although close to the river, Potensac is 

situated on a high point of land in North Medoc. 

Because of this position, the site has been populated 

since ancient times. 

The estate has been in the same family since time 

immemorial and has always been handed down 

by women. The current owner, Jean-Hubert Delon, 

inherited the estate from his paternal grandmother, 

Georgette Liquard. Château Potensac is steeped in 

history, and the wines produced follow suit. 

A classic blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and 

Cabernet Franc, this wine delivers traditional notes 

of red and blackcurrants. Earth and spice are wellpresented 

in this deep ruby coloured, medium-bodied 

wine, which should drink nicely for a decade or more. 

Le Plan Côtes du Rhône Domaine de 

Galuval, Côtes du Rhône, France

The name ‘Le Plan’ is a reference to Le Plan de Dieu – 

an area with origins dating as far back as the Middle 

Ages. Travellers through the region back then were 

advised to commit their soul to God before traversing 

the regions, due to numerous robbers who roamed 

the area (hence Le Plan de Dieu.) 

The Galuval estate is one of the oldest winegrowerharvester 

estates in Cairanne, Rhône. Founded in 1923 

by the Marchal family, it began a qualitative approach 

from its creation by producing its own cuvées and 

daring to package them in bottles. A pioneering 

quality approach from the beginning of the 20th 

century that is continued. 

This wine has beautifully ripe aromas of stewed fruit, 

including cherry and plum on the nose. Dense and 

velvety with elegant fruit, underpinned by distinct 

oaky notes leading to a harmonious finish. All in all, a 

fine Côtes du Rhône.

The term ‘fine wine’ is a slightly ambiguous one as there isn’t officially a 

definition. It usually implies the finest wines representative of a region but a high 

price doesn’t automatically mean a fine wine. Tradition would say that the worldfamous 

regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy are home to the majority of fine 

wines, however, we have delved into our cellars to bring you a classic from not 

just the Medoc but also a Côtes du Rhône, a mouth-watering Sauvignon Blanc 

from Wairarapa, and a Crianza from Rioja to offer something a little different. 

Fincas de Azabache Crianza

From one of the most well-renowned regions in the 

world, this superb Rioja from Azabache is made in 

their ultra-modern winery. We have a long-standing 

working relationship with Azabache and thoroughly 

enjoy welcoming their very own Juan Velilla to the 

South West most years. 

Rioja wines ooze quality and they don’t demand as 

high a price point as you think – this wine is a real gem 

- with 12 months oak-ageing in American and French 

oak, it results in a smooth, rich, and complex style. 

Expect berry jam aromas with hints of balsamic and 

toasty vanilla on the nose, followed by rich red fruit on 

the palate, smooth tannins and creamy mocha notes. 

Craggy Range Te Muna Sauvignon Blanc 

Wairarapa, New Zealand

An incredible Sauvignon Blanc to rival some of the 

best to come out of New Zealand. Craggy Range is 

a family-owned winery situated in the shadow of 

the spectacular Te Mata Peak, in the premium wine 

growing area of Hawke’s Bay. 

This is a must-have for any New Zealand Sauvignon 

Blanc lover. The wine exudes elegance and 

sophistication, at an enticing price point. 

Subtle flavours of fresh lime and grapefruit are 

balanced with a fine chalky texture that is reminiscent 

of the stones and limestone within the vineyard. 

It showcases a pale straw colour with a green hue. 

Expect lovely aromas of citrus blossom, lime, jasmine, 

and the faintest hint of fresh honey. It’s elegant and
