EveryWednesdayeveningfor acoupleof
hoursfrom 6pm, Mike Dyndul opens the
Waimakariri Bike Project (WBP) doorsat
the back of the Dudley Pool complex, and
is inundated by people seeking his help.
‘‘TheWBP is alocal community
initiativeaimedathelping people get out
riding again,’’ he says.
‘‘Basicallywerecycleold preloved
bikes, donate them to peoplewho need
them and also helpothers fix theirbikes so
they can keep riding safely.’’
Mike,the project coordinator, saysmost
nights they are busyasthere are always
people coming downtohelp out, help
others, donateold bikes, find abike or just
learnhow to fix theirbikes.
‘‘Last week, ablokecame down and
askedusfor abike as he neededone to
help him getajob, we wereonly too
pleased to help with abike and get him set
up, especially when we learned he had
walked eight kilometres to get to us.’’
The project tries to supplyanyonewho
needsabike.
‘‘They are freewithnostringsattached
and no questions asked.Wealso gladly
take in any old bikes peoplehave lying
around and have no further use for
because they're eitherbroken, or the kids
have growntoo big forthem.
‘‘We thentidy them up if we can and pass
them on for others to use,’’hesaid.
At the recent Big Day Out event in
Rangiora, the WBP gave away30bikes.
‘‘We usedupall our stockonthat day
and now we are looking for more to
replace them as the demand is still there,’’
Mike said.
Mike, who works locally as acycle safety
trainer for schools, joined the project a
month after it started ayear ago as a
collaboration between many community
groupsand the Waimakariri District
Council.
The idea for acommunitybasedcycle
project originatedfrom theGovernment’s
MentalHealth WorkingGroup report,
which identified repairing bikes as away
of teaching young people new skills,
improvingconfidence and giving theman
affordable mode of transport. Mike saysit
also reduces waste by ‘‘taking bikes from
landfill and givingthemanotherlife’’.
He said all the spare parts they use
eithercome from parts stripped off
unusable bikesordonations fromthe ‘very
generous’ cycle shops in Rangiora.
‘‘They've helpedusout immensely, we
are very gratefulfor their support.
‘‘Whenweget abike, it’s assessed on its
repairability.
‘‘If it’s good, thenwehave many
volunteershere who will work to fix it up
and pass it on. If it isn’tusable, we
carefully removewhat sparepartswecan
reuse and recycle the rest.
‘‘Thisgivesusthe stockofspare partswe
need to keep all the other older model
bikesgoing.’’
Anyone with old bikes lying aroundcan
call Mikeon021 0294 7597 to help get
someone mobile.
The WBP is alsoplanning on holding
bike maintenance coursesnext year to
help peoplemaintain their bikes.
