Memphis
It maybe known as home of the Blues and the Birth place of Rock ’n’ Roll and possibly the
starting point of soul but deep rooted in its DNA is a cross stitch of Music, Cotton, Blues
and BBQ! Memphis has hit a new stride and new generations are looking to put their own
stamp on the city, new bands, fresh takes on traditional cuisines and a can-do culture.
Memphis Highlights
• Memphis’s most famous resident, Elvis Presley definitely left his
legacy in this town. No trip to Memphis should be taken without a
visit to his homestead “Graceland”. Even if you’re not a diehard Elvis
fan you will be hard pressed not to be moved when you wander into
his home and see the personal side of Elvis, or into the Meditation
garden of where he and his parents are laid to rest.
• If music was a religion, then Memphis would be Jerusalem and Sun
Studio it’s most holy shrine! Take a guided tour through the
“Birthplace of Rock ’n’ Roll, the hairs will literally stand out on the
back of your neck. Experience outtakes from sessions and touch
Elvis’ first microphone and hear its history.
• A visit to the Stax Museum of American Soul Music – a tribute to
the legends of American soul music “where it all happened in the
60’s & 70’s”.
• The Beat goes on! Soak up the atmosphere of Beale Street located
in the heart of downtown, one of America’s most musical streets
with three blocks of nightclubs, restaurants and retail shops.
Wednesday nights are bike nights in Beale Street.
• Immerse yourself in new exhibits- touch screen “smart” tablets, oral
histories, pivotal moments brought to life at audio-visual stations- at
the renovated National Civil Rights Museum located right across the
Dining Eating in Memphis is an experience for the soul, not just the
stomach! The speciality maybe BBQ (Memphis is home to more than
100 BBQ restaurants) but, make no bones about it, dining out here
doesn’t stop there. There’s Southern-style soul food, fine dining,
authentic Italian and Mexican cuisine, burger joints, award-winning
chefs, breweries bars and local eateries serving everything from
American classics to eclectic dishes. You won’t go hungry at The
Central BBQ, a great Barbeque restaurant located within walking
distance from the Civil Rights Museum. The Beauty Shop is another
restaurant worth checking out. Once a 1960’s era beauty salon and
frequented by Priscilla Presley, you will not be disappointed. The
restaurants and bars in the Overton Square area of Memphis are on a
revival, offer more of a local feel and a bit more cosmopolitan. You’ll
