National Charolais Youth Stockjudging Finals 2022 The Charolais Youth Stockjudging finalists 2022 Whilst last year’s virtual Youth Stockjudging competition was a success, members young and old alike were keen to return to a more traditional in-person format. By kind permission from Major David Walter & family, Balthayock Farms welcomed 50 promising young people to take part in the National Charolais Youth Stockjudging Finals on 24 July 2022. As with previous competitions, entry was open to young people from ages 8-26, being split into Junior (age 8-14), Intermediate (age 15-18), and Senior (age 19-26) classes. The top ten entrants from the Intermediate and Senior classes were then invited to explain their reasoning to master judge Iain Millar of the Lochend herd and Robert McNee of the Finlarg herd, whilst all Junior entrants had to fill out an assessment card on one animal. The prizes each competitor sought to win included an international trip to the Charolais Championship Final in Moulins for the Seniors, embryos from some of the top cows in the Balthayock, Harestone, and Coolnaslee herds for Seniors & Intermediates, and of course a range of trophies! Also 3 embryos were kindly donated from the Balthayock, Harestone and Coolnaslee herds for the highest placed competitors from Scotland,England and N Ireland. The final results for each age group were as follows: Junior (age 8-14) Joint 1st place: Iona Mallarkey, age 11 – Cockerington Perpetual Trophy and a competition trophy to keep Joint 1st place: Kate McNee, age 9 – Cockerington Perpetual Trophy and a competition trophy to keep Joint 1st place: James Lindsay, age 13 – Cockerington Perpetual Trophy and a competition trophy to keep Intermediate (age 15-18) 1st place: Mollie Cochrane, age 16 – Alwent Perpetual Trophy, a competition trophy to keep, and a Coolnaslee embryo 2nd place: Ruby Simpson, age 15 – Charolais jacket and a competition trophy to keep 3rd place: Matthew Cochrane, age 16 – Charolais bodywarmer Senior (age 19-26) 1st place: Maddie Clarke, age 24 – Houston Perpetual Trophy, a competition trophy to keep, an international trip to the Charolais Championship Final in Moulins, France, and a Balthayock embryo 2nd place: Andrew Adam, age 24 – Charolais jacket, a competition trophy to keep, and an international trip to the Charolais Championship Final in Moulins, France 60 - No bull works harder for the farmer, the plate and the planet - September newsletter 22.indd 60 16/09/2022 15:00:34
