Scottish & Northern - Carly Mackay Scotsheep 1 June Wednesday 1 June 2022 saw all roads lead to the hugely successful farming enterprise of Robert & Hazel McNee’s at Over Finlarg, Tealing where thousands flocked for the much-anticipated event. The three-year wait didn’t disappoint, and it was great to see so many of you back out and about enjoying what we do best!!! The stand was manned by society chairman Allen Drysdale and myself and we must thank Alison Glasgow from the British Limousin Cattle Society for keeping us topped up with free coffee’s & cake all day!! Royal Highland Show 23- 26 July Being back at the RHS 2022 was something a lot of us had been really looking forward to and it certainly was great to be back!! We kicked off the show week with a different approach this year in the form of a small drink’s reception & buffet for our exhibitors & members that were attending the show. Countryside Refreshments provided the buffet & were as always on duty at the bar keeping everyone’s drinks orders topped up. Although we missed the usual BBQ it was nice to just be back at the show & have a much quieter pre-show evening to allow us to get the stand clean & tidy for the AGM the next morning. Thursday morning saw the BCCS AGM take place within the stand before Chris Curry took to the judging ring at 9am for a tasking few hours selecting the cream of the crop. A very well done to all our members who took the time to bring their cattle out to perfection and a very well done to AJR Farms on not only taking home the overall Charolais championship for the second year running with Maerdy Morwr, but also going on to the win the prestigious title of Overall Interbreed Champion. Full Royal Highland Show Report can be found on pages 42- 45 Overall Interbreed, Overall Charolais and Overall Male champion Maerdy Morwr Sir William Young Award The Charolais legend that is Major David Walter of Balthayock Farms, was honoured at the Royal Highland Show this year as the recipient of the prestigious Sir William Young Award for his exceptional contribution to cattle breeding. The award recognises outstanding livestock breeding and commemorates the service to Scottish agriculture by the late Sir William Young. Congratulations to Major Walter from us all at Scottish & Northern. National Charolais Show - Great Yorkshire Show 12–14 July The National Charolais Show this year was held at the Great Yorkshire Show and coincided with the greatly anticipated British Charolais World Congress Tour. The journey from Scotland down to Harrogate certainly was a worthwhile & successful trip for our members who had entered. AJR Farms came home with the Reserve Male Champion then Reserve Overall Champion with Maerdy Morwr. Youth Development Weekend 23 – 24 July The youth development finals came to the Scottish & Northern region this year and the weekend was kicked off with a farm tour by kind permission of the Adam Family at Newhouse. This eased them gently into a jam-packed busy Sunday at Balthayock with Major Walter and his team of Tracey & Davie Nicoll, and all their helpers where they were put through their paces with stock-judging, seminars, and demonstrations. A big thank you must go to all those involved who made the weekend so enjoyable for all the youngsters who took part. These events take a lot of hard work & preparation from the hosts also the sponsors & all the helpers so a big thank you to everyone at Newhouse & Balthayock – a resounding success!! Reserve Female Champion Harestone Royallady British Charolais World Congress Tour 7-18 July Finally, as like many other exciting calendar events over the past few years the Charolais World Congress Tour went ahead bringing many fellow breeders and enthusiasts to the UK to view some of the country’s exceptional pedigree and commercial herds. From the South of England, Wales, Northern Ireland and as far as the central belt of Scotland they arrived each day to farm tours, historic visits and received five-star hospitality & the warmest of welcome from all the hosts, members and friends involved. Chris Curry led the tour being the World Congress Chairman this year and the tour of Scotland took them to Kersknowe, Swalesmoor, Roscoe, Allanfauld & Solwayfirth.
