Book club
Two long weekends this month, so plenty of time to catch up on your reading.
And with loads of amazing new titles on the bookshelves, you’re spoilt for choice.
Imagine, when your child is
a year old, discovering there
may have been a switch at
the fertility clinic. She may
not be yours. Imagine, too,
a year after your daughter
is stillborn, getting a call to
say there may have been a
mistake ... your egg may have
been given to the wrong
person, and your daughter is
alive. Worst. Nightmare. Ever.
Charlene Carr’s Hold My Girl
is a rollercoaster of a read ...
tender, thought-provoking,
emotional. Two women.
Two eggs. One life-changing
switch and a custody battle
fought to the bitter (and it is
bitter) end. Welbeck
Two Dogs, a Peacock and a Horse walk into a bar ... and
everyone lived happily ever after. We’re all for a sense of
humour. And a great glass of Sauv. Put the two together
and what’s not to love! This is the 10th vintage of Black
Elephant Vintners & Co’s Two Dogs, a Peacock and a
Horse Sauvignon Blanc 2022, and the vintage, they say, has
shown up for the celebration. The Cheerleader (the wine’s
nickname) is smooth and fruity (think melon, tropical fruits,
gooseberry) and, the wine makers say, doesn’t mess with
you ... no acidic heartburn after a few glasses. It is, they boast,
perfect for pool parties (and we think book clubs) and 1000
of your closest friends ... and pairs best with Mango Groove’s
Dance Some More. Around R92.
This rich, indulgent chocolate fridge
cake recipe is from Woolworths.
A. Maz. Ing! It serves 10, takes half
an hour or so to put together, then
just chill until it’s time to serve.
You’ll need: 200g chopped milk
chocolate, 200g chopped dark
chocolate, 2 1/2 cups cream, 220g
vanilla shortbread, chopped into
pieces, 100g shelled and chopped
pistachios, and speckled eggs or
Chuckles to decorate
To make: Line the bottom of a
20cm springform cake tin with
baking paper. Place the chocolate
in a glass or metal bowl over a pan
of simmering water. Stir until the
chocolate has melted. Warm the
cream slightly in a saucepan and
stir into the melted chocolate. Mix
in the shortbread and nuts, and
spoon into the tin. Chill for two
hours. When ready to serve, place
a hot cloth around the sides of the
tin for three minutes to melt the
edges. Unmould onto a platter
We heart the market!
North Coasters are thrilled that Durban’s iconic, monthly I Heart Market has made its
home right here on our doorstep at Sugar Rush Park. We found out a little more about
the ambitious human behind this beloved market. Meet Anna Savage.
A true creative, a rule-breaker and
an entrepreneur who marches to
the beat of her own drum, Anna
is a Durban girl who left her chef
career to create a platform for local
craftspeople who didn't have a place
to sell their wares. A decade later, the
I Heart Market is still one of Durban's
most loved and well-supported.
1. Tell us about younger Anna
I grew up in Glenwood and went to
Durban Girls High. From the first day
of school I knew I didn't want to go
back (even though I had to continue
for the next 12 years!). I've always
proffered to do things differently. I
don't like sticking to the rules and
I like finding fun, creative solutions.
After school I travelled the world,
working in restaurants in London and
New York. This is where I discovered
my passion for food and desire to
become a chef. I trained at Christina
Martins Chef School after returning
home and then spent time running
high-volume fine dining restaurants
in Franschhoek. I returned to Durban
a few years later and an opportunity
to open a restaurant fell in my lap. Five
weeks later, without much of an idea
of what direction I wanted to go in,
at the age of 26, I opened Manna - a
day-time café in Marriott Road. I loved
being able to create the foods that
I wanted to eat and the customers
loved it, too!
2. When, how and why was
I Heart Market born?
After a few years, the strain of running
restaurants took its toll and I was
diagnosed with chronic fatigue. I
left the industry. Soon afterwards I
discovered a gap in the market when
I realised that no-one was showcasing
locally-made products. I knew so
many talented craftspeople who
didn’t have a platform to sell their
wares and so I heart Market was born!
Understanding the social habits of
Durbanites I decided to host it once a
month and the market grew fast. Our
relatively small database of traders
began to grow.
10 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga April 2023
3. What was your initial vision
and how has it evolved over
the years?
The vision was always to showcase
locally-made products that we
thought were unique, interesting
and different from the run-of-the-mill
items you find in a mall. We wanted to
create a wholesome day out in nature
where you could support the

Market
founder
Anna
Savage
creatives in your own community.
Most importantly, this was never
going to be a 'flea market'. You can't
buy cheap plastic items, imported,
tacky or poorly made products. We
showcase only good quality artisan
products … which is why I called it
I Heart Market - it was all the things
that I loved.
4. Tell us about moving to the
North Coast?
The dynamics of Durban shifted a lot
and, post Covid, we decided that a
change was needed to continue the I
Heart Market trajectory. We love Sugar
Rush Park! It’s a great activity hub for
the whole family and already has lots
of fun things going on there … so
adding the market just makes it more
of an attraction.
5. What can we expect to see
at the new I Heart Market?
The move has brought with it a nice
selection of traders - some old and
some new. All are great quality though.
Shoppers can expect to find handcrafted
jewellery, natural skin care, soya
wax candles, kids toys and clothing,
women's wear, cool T-shirts, beautiful
leather shoes, delicious brownies,
biltong and snacks, as well as a tasty
selection of food to eat after building
up an appetite from all your shopping!
6. What are your top 'marketshopping'
tips?
Sunblock! Hydrate! Take the time to
chat to the traders. That’s the joy of a
market . . . you can chat to the people
who have actually designed and made
the product. You can learn about the
process and get to know them better,
thereby understanding where your
hard-earned money is going!
Details: @IheartMarket. Anyone
interested in joining I Heart Market as a
trader can contact Anna on:
A welcoming
village
They say it takes a village to raise a child. Now, thanks to Umhlanga mom and
entrepreneur, Bron Veale, there is a beautiful, friendly village ready and waiting to
welcome you and your little one.
Text: Leah Shone
aving a baby is by far one of the most magical and
life-altering things any woman will experience. It can
also be quite daunting and a little bit lonely at times.
Enter The Village.
Established by well-known North Coast professional
photographer and mother-of-two Bron Veale, The Village is
a welcoming, judgement-free space that supports moms
and local businesses.
Situated in Sunningdale Centre, it is a place where moms
of babies (from newborns to two-year-olds) can come and
breathe, connect and take a moment for themselves.
It was while she was pregnant with her second child, Bron
says, that she realised there was a gap in the market for
a space where mothers could come together and truly
connect and bond.
“After I had my son I felt quite lonely. I realised during my
maternity leave that we needed somewhere for mothers with
small babies to go, where they could enjoy a hot cup of coffee
and a chat while someone helped care for their little one.
“Maternity leave is a wonderful time, but being alone
at home with your baby all day can lead to cabin fever.
Women's mental wellness is so important, and I wanted
to create a place where mothers could feel comfortable,
enjoy workshops and talks about the different stages of
motherhood, or just enjoy a cup of coffee or meal in a
beautiful, calm setting with friendly faces around.”
Baby classes, while lovely, are generally only once a week
for an hour, and it's often more about the babies than the
mothers. The Village is an open space where you can come
whenever it works for you and your baby's routine and
there are highly-qualified and experienced child minders
available to care for your little one.
The Village is about forming bonds and creating a
community, Bron says, which is why she decided to run it
on a membership basis.
“We definitely aren't trying to be 'exclusive'. We simply
want moms to know that the people around them are not
here to judge and are also coming in regularly, looking to
form real relationships. The R500 monthly membership fee
includes our minders, free Wi-Fi, access to (and discounts
on) workshops and talks and our weekly support group or
'breakfast club'. You can join on a month-to-month basis
or even just for a few months (for example, the duration of
your maternity leave). There are no tie-ins or contracts.”
Having also seen the need for a retail space to showcase
the many local, beautiful baby items on the market
usually only available online and often with hefty delivery
charges, Bron added a bespoke baby boutique (which is
open to the public) at the entrance of The Village.
The café is a very important element, she says, and
Bron wanted the food to be healthy, while still being
comforting and delicious. It had to be food that moms
actually want to eat (carbs, please!) and things that are
easy to eat with one hand if needed!
“We outsource some items because our kitchen space is
small, but most of the food is made here. “We also stock
the new Delish Sisters Baby range, which includes finger
food and purées for babies.”
Bron underwent training with top Durban baby specialist
Jenny Johnson to upskill herself in the areas of maternal
support, baby stimulation, routines, sleep training
and milestones. While grannies and child-minders are
welcome as well, The Village is a 'women-only' zone.
“We felt it was important to keep it women-only so that
our moms could feel as comfortable as possible. We want
you to be able to come here in your pyjamas if it's that kind
of day, with or without make-up, and relax while you're
breastfeeding or talking openly about something personal.”
Having only been open for a couple of months, Bron says
the space is evolving all the time. There is a meeting room
(which can be booked for workshops, talks or meetings)
and an outdoor play area for older children coming soon.
A family of
doctors
The Maharaj family. Front (from left): Smita, Suhana, Sahil Maharaj
and Sandhya; Back: Jenita and Naren
It’s not often you come across an entire family of doctors. Not to mention one where
everyone studied (or is studying) at the same institution. Meet Umhlanga’s ambitious,
compassionate and altruistic Maharaj family.
“There are no greater heroes than those who help the sick,”
says 18-year-old Smita Maharaj.
The youngest in a family of four, Smita this year joined her
two older sisters as a medical student at UKZN medical
school - the same place where their older brother and both
parents qualified as doctors as well.
While living with this bunch might sound a bit intimidating,
the Maharaj family are down-to-earth and fun-loving, and
enjoy nothing more than spending time together. “Like any
other family, we laugh together, pray together, play together
and we cry together. We have normal sibling bickering, usually
about something silly like who ate the last McDonald’s
nugget in the fridge or who stole the favourite pair of jeans,”
laughs Smita, who matriculated from Westville Girls High
School last year.
Mentors and role models
It seems almost inevitable that Smita ended up studying
medicine, with her mom, Jenita, an optometrist and dad,
Dr NB Maharaj, a GP. As a child Smita spent much of her
childhood running between her parents Umlazi-based
practice. “I have fond memories of playing with the nurses
and receptionists at their medical centre who helped raise
me. They all made a lasting impression on my life and I will
be forever grateful for the role they played in grooming me
into the person I am today.”
It was from her parents, though, Smita says, that she learned
about true humanity. “There was never any glory, fame or
extravagance at my parent's practice. It was always just
about healing the sick. It was about medicine and everyone
was treated with the utmost respect and dignity.”
As she watched her parents heal the ill and saw their patients’
gratitude, Smita says she realised that this was what
she wanted to do with her life as well.
“We are all on a journey and the path we choose decides
our fate. I believe I have the ability to influence humanity
positively and I don't want to waste my life chasing material
dreams or status.”
As role models, Smita says her parents have instilled a strong
sense of altruism in all four of their children. “Our parents
never sit us down and dictate how we should live our lives.
Instead, everything we have learned has been from watching
their actions and wanting to emulate them.”
Meet the siblings
Smita also gets a lot of support from her older siblings. She
tells us a bit about each one of them:
Sahil: “My brother Sahil is the eldest. He matriculated in
2015 and was placed fifth in the province. He qualified
Cum Laude from UKZN medical school and is in his
second year of his internship at King Edward/Wentworth
Hospital. He is well-balanced, calm and level-headed and a
very protective big brother.”
Sandhya: “Sandhya is the eldest of the sisters and in her
final year of medicine at UKZN. She is the 'drama queen' of
the family and a ball of energy, firing on all cylinders all the
time! She is passionate about anything she gets involved
in and is a perfectionist. She is the person I go to when I
need a pep talk or am feeling down.”
Suhana: “The closest in age to me, Suhana finished
school in 2019 and was placed sixth in the province.
She is a fourth-year medical student and is definitely
the most direct out of all of us. She will give you her
honest, unfiltered opinion and keeps things very real. She
also creates a positive atmosphere and is a very caring,
protective older sister.”
There was never any glory,
fame or extravagance at my
parents’ practice. It was always
just about healing the sick
Life outside of medicine
All four siblings practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and love
sparring together. “We play table tennis every day and
also enjoy playing pool. When the weather is good, we
are usually in the swimming pool where things often
get quite competitive,” laughs Smita. “My mom insists we
all practice yoga and Pilates and these help me to stay
grounded and keep things in perspective.”
Smita says the family also loves travelling internationally
together, experiencing new cultures and cuisines and
usually go on at least two overseas trips every year.
“There is never a dull moment in our home and I just love
being there,” she says. “Our home is a safe place for all of us,
where we are all support structures for one another. When
the weight of something becomes too much for one to
handle, we are the 'spotters', the sounding boards and
each other's life coaches.”

An exciting journey
Like so many, the Delish Sisters bespoke caterers have had to evolve and diversify over
the past few years. The result has been the transformation of this incredible brand into
something even more exciting than ever before. We caught up with ‘delish sister’
Becs Woodcock.
Text: Leah Shone • Photos: CHRIS ALLAN PHOTO • Hair: Crop Hair Salon • Makeup: Kylie P Makeup • Dressed by: Muze
“Our brand has developed organically
as our personal circumstances and
customer needs have changed over
the years,” says Rebecca, or 'Becs'.
She and her sister Kate started
Delish Sisters nine years ago,
selling yummy baked goods at
Durban's I Heart Market and The
Wondermarket in Umhlanga.
Since then, the Delish Sisters has
become a household name on the
North Coast. Their gooey, moreish
chocolate brownies and lamb
wraps were among the many tasty,
homemade treats that catapulted
the stylish siblings from hustling
their wares on weekend markets to
running a fully-fledged café at The
Litchi Orchard in Salt Rock.
After a few years in the restaurant
industry, Becs and Kate moved
exclusively into the bespoke catering
space and also published their own,
beautiful cookbook.
When business came to a griding
halt during Covid, the sisters started
Delish Sisters Meals - a range of frozen
and baked goods (yes, including
those brownies), sauces and dips,
which they sold at several select local
stockists and online.
While Kate headed up Delish Sisters
Meals, Becs has spent the past two
years working in the food styling
industry. Having worked with some of
the biggest commercial companies
in the country, including brands such
as Knorrox, Knorr, Robertsons, Farmer
Brown and Coca-Cola.
Now operating under the name
Delish Sisters Studio, she also still
manages to fit in the odd fun, creative
job, she says, such as styling the St
Anne's old girl's cookbook, which will
be published later this year.
Now, as the sisters' lives begin to
evolve once more, so too is the
business. “It's been an incredible
journey, starting the brand and
watching it grow as we've moved
into each stage of our lives,” says
Becs, whose life in particular has
done a complete 360-degree turn in
the past year.
Not only did she get married, but also
became a mom to now 11-month-old
baby Tom.
Tom, as it turns out, is the inspiration
behind the newest addition to the
Delish Sisters repertoire - Delish Sisters
Baby. “Tom has always been the most
relaxed baby and has always fed well.
Watching him experience food, which
has been such a huge part of my
life for so long, has been next-level
special,” says Becs, smiling.
The Delish Sister Baby range, which
launched just this month, includes
a small selection of purees (ranging
from smooth to chunky), as well as
a variety of baby-led weaning items,
such as waffle fingers, fritattas and
falafal balls. There are also yummy
treats like the smoothie melts, which
are sweet little droplets of freezedried
smoothies, packed with organic
fruit and veggies.
“By far the biggest investment in this
part of the business has been the
freeze drier. It allows us to freeze and
vacuum-sealed food at extremely
low temperatures, meaning the food
loses hardly any of its nutritional
value. The baby food range is all
about finding different and fun ways
for kids to get healthy, delicious food
into their little bodies.”
The baby range is produced at their
high-quality Mount Edgecome-based
commercial kitchen which meets all
health and safety requirements. Becs
also has an incredible, fully-fitted
photography studio upstairs for the
food styling side of the business. “I
just love our new studio offering. It’s a
light and airy oasis for food magic to
be created. It’s also open to big and
small businesses to hire out and shoot
content for their brands,” says Becs.
The baby food range is being rolled
out in local stores where their current
Delish Sisters products are sold, as
well as online and at The Village in
Sunningdale Centre.
Believe it or not, there is a third Delish
Sister, named Julia. “Our youngest
sister is currently heading up another
branch of the business in the USA,
where she's running a Delish Sisters
restaurant inside a boutique hotel
in South Carolina. All three of us are
motivated, career-driven humans
and working and achieving results
really puts wind in our sails. But it
is incredibly important to all of us
that we enjoy what we do as well,
which is why we continue to evolve
and change things up! Delish Sisters
has been an incredibly personal
journey for all of us and, although
we've been thrown curve balls, they
have ultimately turned out to be for
the better and the business truly is
authentically ‘us'.”
Truffles for Easter?
In the spirit of Easter, we asked Becs to share one of her favourite chocolate recipes with
our readers and this is what she came up with. We have to admit, we tried them …
and yes, they are every bit as delicious as they look!
“This recipe is one we have had in our
Delish Sisters arsenal for years. It’s such a
simple recipe and makes a beautiful gift
or sweet ending to a dinner party. Have
some fun with the flavour by adding
dried spices, like cinnamon or cardamom,
or even substituting the vanilla essence
with rosewater or caramel essence. Nuts,
seeds, cocoa, freeze dried fruit, toasted
coconut and gold dust are some of our
faves when it comes to the coating - so
go ahead and get creative!”
Chocolate Truffles
(makes 30 truffles)
You’ll need: 320g dark, milk or white chocolate; 125ml cream; 1 tsp vanilla
extract/paste; coating ingredients (get creative!)
To make: Break the chocolate up into a ceramic or glass bowl and melt
over the stove in double boiler. Alternatively, put the bowl of chocolate
into the microwave and melt in gradual 30-second bursts. Once the
chocolate is melted and shiny, stir in the cream and vanilla essence. Cover
the bowl with some cling film and refrigerate for at least two hours. Scoop
the chocolate mixture and roll into balls. Coat with a topping of your
choice and refrigerate again until you’re ready to serve!
Cars,
kids
& heat
It may be the start of
autumn, but if you live on
the North Coast you know
that the heat and humidity
are far from gone and
children should never be left
in vehicles unatttended.
Every year we hear about parents
forgetting their children in the car,
sometimes with tragic consequences.
This can happen to a parent for
several reasons (a change in routine,
sleep deprivation, time pressures and
stress), so the team from MotorHappy
are offering some tips to help
parents avoid making this possibly
devastating error.
Put something you need in the back seat (cell phone, handbag, employee ID
or even one of your shoes!);
Set a reminder on your cell phone;
Keep a stuffed animal in your child’s car seat. When the child is in the car seat,
place the stuffed animal in the front seat to remind you that your child is in
the back;
Make it a habit to look into the back seat before you lock your car, even
when your child is not there;
Ask your child’s day care or child minder to always let you know if your child
does not arrive when expected;
If your child is old enough, teach them how to work the hooter so they can
call for help if they’re accidently locked in the car.
Woven delights
From elegant, oversized plant holders to gorgeous counter top storage
baskets and unique toy containers, all of the baskets woven by Salt Rock’s
Gerald Mudzingwa are trendy, top quality and in high demand.
Text: LEAH SHONE • Photos: WAYNE JOHNSTONE
atural, stylish and the perfect way to add
texture and interest to a space, woven grass
baskets are still a popular interior trend.
Which is one of the reasons why 39-year-old
Zimbabwe-born basket-maker Gerald has
become one of the most well-known makers on the North
Coast. Friendly and professional, Gerald has developed a
reputation among both interior designers and homeowners
for the excellent quality service and products he delivers.
Having started making and selling items on the roadside
at the age of 18, Gerald and his siblings learned their skills
from their mother while growing up in their hometown of
Chiredzi, Zimbabwe.
“From 18 until around the age of 25, I made a living selling
sandals, baskets and brooms on the side of the road in
Chiredzi and Harare. We were struggling and there wasn't
much of a market for baskets and we sold mostly brooms,”
says Gerald.
Then a friend invited him to come and stay in South Africa
four years ago. “He knew I was a skilled basket-maker and
said there was a bigger market for baskets here.”
Gerald moved to Durban and started selling a few baskets
every week, just managing to pay his bills and put food on
the table.
About two years ago he decided to give the Ballito market
a try. “I began selling brooms and feather dusters next to
Food Lovers Market. One day a woman approached me
and asked if I could repair one of her baskets. I told her I was
actually really good at making baskets and that's when I
decided to start selling them there as well.”
Gerald quickly realised there was a bigger market for his
products and moved his business to Salt Rock (next to
Tiffany's Centre), where he is still based today. That is when
things really started to change.
“The local community
embraced our business,
even offering me advice
on new designs and
ideas. They dropped
off samples for me to
try and, eventually, I
started developing
relationships with local
interior designers who were looking for woven items for
their clients.”
Gerald moved away from making straw carry baskets to
creating unique plant holders, laundry bags and toy storage
baskets. He now also makes beautiful woven coffee tables
and grass lampshades. So many of his ideas come from
his clients, Gerald says, and he has taught himself different
weaving techniques and methods.
His youngest brother, Alexander, now works with Gerald in
his business and, between them, they make almost every
item they sell. “We do outsource some of the very tightlywoven
items from local Malawian guys who are more skilled
at that than us, but we make everything else ourselves.
We always try new things and love learning different
techniques. Sometimes we fail, but that's okay, because it
is in failing that you start to learn,” says Gerald, who recently
took his business up a notch, opening a pop-up store at The
Odyssey Mall.
Gerald is grateful to his customers, who have helped him
make the business what it is today. “I'm so thankful to all
those who have stopped to give me ideas and advice and
trusted me to make items for them and their clients. They
have challenged and pushed me to grow.”
Plant plenty
Fill your garden with crunchy garden
peas, pansies, poppies, petunias,
primulas and gorgeous Gullivers
Garden tasks for April
• Plant the Four P’s: Pansies, poppies,
petunias and primulas. • Scatter
sow seed of Namaqualand daisies,
alyssum, lobelia, Virginian stocks, and
winter scatter pack mixes. By sowing
batches of Namaqualand daisies two
or three weeks apart you will have
flowers right through to September
• Plant spring bulbs after Easter. •
Fertilise the lawn as well as spring
flowering shrubs and perennials. •
Wait until after Easter to plant out
spring flowering bulbs. • Water once
a week. • This is the last month for
sowing beetroot, cabbage, carrots,
lettuce, leeks, peas, Asian greens,
parsnips, spinach and Swiss chard,
spring onions, turnips and radishes.
Veggie of the month
Garden peas are sweetest when eaten straight from the pod, which is a
good way to convert the kids to snacking on veggies. Garden-grown peas
are certainly tastier, crunchier and more nutritious than any frozen version.
Kirchhoffs ‘Greenfeast’ is a climbing pea that needs staking/support, and
produces a heavy crop of large, well-filled deep green pods. Plant in deeply
dug, fertile soil enriched with compost and well-rotted manure. Water well
at the base of the plant throughout the growing period and especially when
flowering. Garden peas are an excellent source of plant protein. Besides being
eaten raw they can be steamed, added to salads, stews, stir-fries and soups.
Details: kirchhoffs.co.za
Ctentanthe ‘Golden Mosaic’ is a
green and gold variegated indoor
plant; yup Springbok rugby colours
if you are in the mind to support the
lads in the build-up to the Rugby
World Cup later this year. Besides
silently supporting our national
team, this indoor plant’s other
attribute is that it has anti-pollutant
characteristics. It is ideal if you want to
breathe fresh, clean air indoors. Place
in a position that receives medium
to bright light, in a warm, moderately
humid room. Keep the soil moist by
watering once the top layer of soil
feels dry. Fertilise with a diluted liquid
fertiliser once a month in spring and
summer. Keep the plant looking neat
by cutting off dead leaves at the base
of the plant. Details: lvgplant.co.za
We’re
planting …
Bacopa Scopia ‘Gulliver’ Compact
Rosa because it is a hardy indigenous
groundcover, that shows off even better as
a compact, semi-trailing plant for hanging
baskets, containers and window boxes. It
is covered in a myriad of pink flowers that
are somewhat larger and darker than other
pinks in the bacopa range. As a garden
filler it likes well-drained soil and full sun,
but as a container plant morning sun and
afternoon shade is preferable. It flowers
abundantly and will go through to summer
as it is heat and drought tolerant.
old wallpaper, key
pieces and the clever
use of reupholstering
were all it took to
transform this home
into a contemporary,
unique sanctuary where spaces flow
seamlessly into one another.
“We wanted to give the home
an update without removing the
antique furniture and special items
that were already there,” says Ardent
Interiors owner Megan. “Our brief
was to create unique spaces that
tell a story, while still keeping it
comfortable, homey and a place
where memories can be created.”
This bold, black bedroom is
unique, dramatic and exciting!
Ardent Interiors owner
Megan Cardwell
BOLD CHANGES
While Megan and her team were given a lot of free reign, they also enjoyed the
input they received from their clients during their brainstorming and working
sessions. “This ensured that they were happy with the boundaries we wanted to
push. The black bedroom was touch-and-go,” she laughs, “but it worked out in
the end and has become one our favourite rooms to date!”
Another bold move, Megan says, was in the cove area, which lies between
the living and dining rooms. “Now covered in beautiful, airloom-flowered
wallpaper, we had some wonderful working sessions around this space,
which ended up coming together so beautifully. It was also nice to bring
some colour into the living area where greys, white and wood were
dominant. Taking a risk with the pops of moody colour paid off and we were
both very happy with the end result.”
A FRESH LOOK
Reupholstering, which was a big
focus with this project, is a great
way to update and freshen up loved
pieces, while also keeping costs
down. “The entire patio lounge
was reupholstered, which saved on
unnecessarily purchasing expensive
outdoor furniture. We also kept a
lot of the sentimental antiques,
updating and refreshing them with
beautiful fabrics, chalk paint and new
scatter covers.”
Megan says there was generally
one key item in each room that
was a 'splurge', like a playful pouffe,
headboard with character, modern
lighting, and some greenery to bring
spaces to life.
“We also always include décor items.
Clients often ask if they are necessary,
but I feel they are so important to
give a room that final, finishing touch.
Small décor items create sentiment
(not to be mistaken with clutter).”
UNIQUE AND MEMORABLE
Reflecting on the overall experience
and final outcome of this project,
Megan says she loved the challenge
and being given the freedom to
push boundaries. She also says she
is very lucky to work with incredible
suppliers, such as Hertex Fabrics.
“Our Hertex agent gives us weekly
updates on everything new coming
in, ensuring our clients are privvy to
the latest and greatest on the market.
Their imports, while slightly more
expensive, are also amazing and it is
lovely to know that we can keep up to
date with international trends.”
Having created a unique and
memorable home that flows
seamlessly, Megan says she is very
proud of what they have achieved. “I
could not imagine any other home
looking even slightly similar to the
spaces that we have brought to life
here. Each room is unique, while
still carrying the overall look and
feel of the entire home. It still holds
memories and sentimental value,
while offering a sense of calm and
comfort that every home should
bring. I am very grateful to this client
for allowing me to just 'go with it' and
for trusting the process.”
Reupholstering was a big focus in this project and each
room was also given a little ‘splurge’ like the addition of a
playful pouffe, modern lighting or greenery.
