The Forrester Gallery and
Waitaki Museum welcomes you
When you visit Ōamaru make sure you
have time for the Forrester Gallery and
the Waitaki Museum and Archive.
The Forrester Gallery is housed in the
former Bank of New South Wales. Come
and say hello to this stunning whitestone
building, one of the most striking in
Ōamaru. And one of the few you can
explore inside. Visit the Gallery and
wander around the main floor to view
the artwork while admiring the beautiful
ornate plaster ceilings. Make sure you
check out the original bank vault too. A
journey upstairs via the original hanging
staircase to see more art and take in the
wonderful views along Thames Street
and out to Ōamaru Harbour.
Waitaki Museum is housed in the former
Athenaeum building. The Museum’s new
exhibitions tell local natural and cultural
stories that are beautifully presented
in state-of-the-art displays. The upper
floor of the Museum has recently
reopened with an exhibition dedicated
to local 20th century history. A highlight
for many visitors is Kā Puipuiaki O
Korotuaheka. This exhibition showcases a
significant collection of taoka (treasures),
dating back to the earliest days of Māori
settlement. The Waitaha Taoka | Stewart
Willetts Family Collection includes
thousands of stone tools, as well as
adornment and items for fishing and
hunting: all of them found at the mouth
of the Waitaki River.

The wool & haberdashery shops that once
graced every town have almost become extinct,
but step back in time with a visit to Rose’s
Enhanced.
Stocking a broad range of wool from 2ply
to chunky as well as a mix of yarns like silk,
