RECOVERYINSIDER DEV’S LAW Derek Firminger talks to Independent Road Safety Campaigner and public speaker Meera Naran MBE. by Derek Firminger Spring is just around the corner and as always, the first industry event, the Institute of Vehicle <strong>Recovery</strong> AGM is upon us once again. Sunny Stratford-upon-Avon was once more the venue and I’m sure repeated several times within this magazine will be the fact the IVR is celebrating its 40th anniversary. To some readers this will mean very little, however without the Institute and the work its volunteers have done every day over the last four decades, the recovery industry would be in a very different place today. The tireless work carried out to improve the safety of the roadside recovery worker and the public it serves continues today, based on the selfless commitment and not for profit attitude, the foundations were firmly set back in March 1983. With so many milestones to celebrate, those pioneers were thanked with a time-line presentation from the President Nick Ovenden and his reliable vice chair Mark Hartell. RECOVERYINSIDER started, the theme running though those 40 year was to improve safety at the roadside, and to strive for the highest level of training, and to save lives. With roadside safety at the heart of this year’s AGM the first guest speaker was announced to the room, Meera Naran. I’m fortunate to know Meera from attending several industry working groups, where I would be representing the recovery industry and lobbying for improved roadside safety, and a safer and more thought-out working environment on our smart and all lane running motorways. At those same meetings Meera, who is an independent road safety campaigner, was lobbying for similar improvements. I will always remember the very first Teams meeting where I was introduced to Meera. I was taken back by how well-spoken she was, and how at the very first opportunity she voiced so eloquently her expectations around the 18-point smart motorway stocktake. She left nothing to chance and noticeably had the full attention of leaders and stakeholders in road safety, as they sat up and listened! I knew a little bit about Meera, but only because I had seen her face on numerous news reports, following the death of her son on a stretch of the M6 in a tragic collision in May 2018. To see someone that had gone through such trauma and yet be so positive with her campaigning for roadside safety, was beyond inspiring. Last November I was invited to the Highways UK awards evening, relevant only because this was the first time I saw Meera speak openly about what had happened. She spoke to a packed audience with such passion, you could have heard a pin drop. Everyone was so focused on her message to improve roadside safety with a goal of zero roadside deaths. I knew a little bit about Meera, but only because I had seen her face on numerous news reports, following the death of her son on a stretch of the M6 in a tragic collision in May 2018. To see someone that had gone through such trauma and yet be so positive with her campaigning for roadside safety, was beyond inspiring. That evening Meera deservedly received the Laureate award for road safety. Afterwards, I made a point of introducing myself. No need of course, as she remembered me from those Teams meetings, as we campaign for similar goals - I’m just not so eloquent.
