Schurr was thrilled to see the State Highway 73/Weedons Ross Rd intersection upgrade officially opened last week after the association petitioned for it to be completed. “It was such a barrier having the state highway through our town – it has reconnected West Melton,” Schurr said. “It’s a major win for road safety.” The association delivered 2333 signatures on the petition to Parliament in 2020. “There was a lot of work in those early days to raise its profile,” Schurr said. The upgrades also improve pedestrian safety in the area, with West Melton School pupils now able to cross the intersection safely. Schurr has already noticed how much safer it is since the lights were first switched on last month. Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Intersection upgrade ‘major win’ “What we are seeing is more kids walking, cycling or scootering to school now because it is much safer for them,” he said. Since 2006 there have been 13 crashes at the intersection, of which one was serious, four were minor, and eight caused no injuries. Schurr was hoping to see a drop in the number of crashes with the addition of the traffic lights. The ceremony included a performance from the West Melton School kapa haka group. The upgrade project also blocked off West Melton Rd at the intersection with SH73, created a new road connecting West Melton and Weedons Ross Rds and widened the cycleway along West Melton Rd. Landscaping for the project will be completed over winter. •Fight to stop intersection closing, page 8 NEWS 3 Fire caused by faulty heat unit • By Susan Sandys A HOUSE fire in Lincoln was caused by the motor in a faulty heat transfer unit that was recalled nine years ago. The Lincoln Volunteer Fire Brigade responded to a call about smoke at a house in Ryelands Drive on March 30. An electrician confirmed the smoke was from the unit, which transferred excess heat from one room to another. The resident posted to social media about the smoke, saying they did not know where it was coming from. “I am pleased I was working at home, was there to act quick, and feel so lucky it did not happen while we were asleep. It could have been horrific,” she said. Smoke filled the bedrooms, where there were no smoke alarms. She later discovered the unit was one of four models voluntarily recalled by Weiss Ltd in 2014. The recall was for model numbers FV652, FV653, FV 602 and FV 603, manufactured between 2007 and 2009. The units caused several fires and overheating incidents.
