IT was a result that ultimately cost Queens Park
Rangers dearly in their quest for the 1975/76
Football League title.
The R’s went into the fixture on a fabulous run of
11 wins and a draw from 12 unbeaten games and
proudly led the table…

In those days of two points for a win, it meant that
the Superhoops would be champions if they could
secure victories in their final three games of the
campaign.
With interest reaching fever pitch, an estimated
15,000 Rangers fans travelled to Carrow Road for
the Easter Saturday clash with mid-table Norwich
City.
An afternoon of high drama unfolded in front of
the BBC1 Match of the Day cameras as follows…
26 minutes: Following intuitive forward play by
Mick McGuire and Colin Suggett for the Canaries,
Ted MacDougall nipped in to convert his 27th goal
of the season. 1-0.
44 minutes: Flying winger Dave Thomas rounded
off a series of infuriating QPR misses by finding
the target in emphatic fashion. 1-1.
67 minutes: A Norwich corner by Suggett was
powerfully punched away by R’s goalkeeper
Phil Parkes, but Peter Morris returned it with
unstoppable power from 20 yards. 2-1.
76 minutes: Phil Boyer was clearly offside when he
headed Norwich’s third after a Morris centre was
nodded back across goal by David Jones. 3-1.
87 minutes: Home defender Tony Powell was
pressurised into lobbing a spectacular own goal to
give Rangers late hope. 3-2.
This result was to have devastating consequences
as Liverpool eventually pipped QPR to the title by
a point.
