Fed farmers continues opposition to ute tax
FederatedFarmers continues to
oppose the increase in Ute Tax
announced in the recent budget.
Transport spokesperson Mark
Hooper says it is just another cost on a
productive sector already underhuge
pressurewith rapidly increasing costs
and slipping commodity prices.
‘‘We’ve opposed the UteTax from
day one because farmers don’t have
viable or reliablealternatives to get
the job done on their farms —and now
the Government is increasing it,’’
Hoopersaid.
The budget announcement will see
feescharged to buyers of high
emissionsvehiclesincreasing, and the
threshold for whatqualifiedasahigh
emissionsvehicle will reduce from
192gofCO2 per kilometre to 150g.
‘‘Tofund the changes to make it
easier for New Zealanders to
purchase cleaner imports, we're
adjusting charges on high emissions
vehicles,’’ thethen Transport
Minister,MichaelWoods said.
‘‘This includes vehicleslike utes
which are amongthe highest emitting
vehicles withinour fleet.’’
Mr Hooper says farmers are not
driving utesassomesortofstatus
symbol.
‘‘Wehave agenuine need for
reliable fourwheel drivevehicles to
tow equipment and get around our
farms safely.’’
The budgetannouncement will
increase the maximum fee charged on
the registration of anew ute to $6900
(up from$5175 previously), and the
registration of aused ute to $3450 (up
from $2875).
‘‘Farmers shouldn’t be taxed on
their work vehicles to subsidise
wealthy Tesla owners in Remuera and
Karori. That'sjust wrong.
‘‘The announcement is abitter pill
to swallow for farmers who arealready
being hammered with all sorts of cost
increases,’’ Mr Hooper says.
‘‘Instead of heaping new costs on to
aproductive sector,the Government
shouldbefocusing on sorting out the
state of our potholeriddledrural
roads.
‘‘If theydon'tget on to that soon, we
might need aute to go anywhere.’’
