Dedicated volunteers
As local MP, oneofthe most inspiring
parts of my job is meeting our volunteers
all aroundthe electorate.
It never ceasestoamazemejust how
manypeople, in allcorners of
Waimakariri, give up time forthe
bettermentoftheir community.
Whetheritbeour incredible emergency
service volunteers, staff manning our
amazing op shops, people deliveringfood
to families in need, or those who provide
community eventsand activities, these
individualsare dedicated to making our
communities thrive.
Volunteers are oftenthe unsung heroes,
quietlyhelping out behind the scenes,
which is whyIam hostingmorningtea this
Volunteer Week2023.
The theme is Big Shout Out, so Iwant to
giveashout out to all our volunteers.
In Wellington lastweek Ihad the
privilege of meetingTheresa Zame, and
receiving herpetition calling for an
amendmenttothe Therapeutics Products
Billtoallow her to import lifesaving
prescriptiondrugs.
While Theresa describesherselfasjust
‘a mumfromGizzy’, Icallher a
courageousand strong woman. Theresa is
battling stage4lungcancer,but hasbeen
makingprogressthankstomedicationshe
importsfrom Bangladesh.
Under Labour’s Billshe, andmany
others, willnot onlybestopped,but
criminalised for importing theirlifesavingprescription
medication.
Istand behind Theresa, and the
6500strong petitionshe delivered to
Parliament lastweek.
It was an honourtobethere to receive
herpetition, and Ithank her for her work
to highlightthis injustice.
Momentum is gathering following my
public meeting in Kaiapoirecently to
discusscommunityledCCTV.
It was great to see theshow of hands in
support of the projectmoving forwardand
nowthat the relevantpartiesare
connected Iamconfidentthings will
progress.
Sincethe successofthe meeting Ihave
hadresidents getintouchfrom other
subdivisions, including Silverstream,
whereIwouldbehappy to facilitate a
similaroutcome.
It's important that communities work
togethertoachieve thisincollaboration
with authoritiesincluding NZ Police, as
themore resourceswehaveonour
streets, the safer we willall be.
IvisitedKittyKingdom in Rangiora
recentlyand was introducedtosome
prettycute fluffy kittens looking for
homes.The team at Kitty Kingdomtold
me about an initiative they are working on
to seek abylaw which would requirecat
owners to desexand microchip their
pets. Catscan multiplyalarminglyrapidly
if left to havekittens–theycan have
several litters every year–so it is vital
everyone plays their parttoprevent so
many unwanted andstray cats.
Isupport their call for tighter cat
control in Waimakariri, and hope other
councils consider getting on board too.
complex and challenging multiyear
programmethat is an exemplar for
those communities needing to recover
from anatural disaster… and has
The Regeneration Kaiapoi project
has generated avibrant landscape of
interconnectingrecreation and
commercialspaces,rich with
opportunities for cultural and social
connection out of earthquakedamaged
land thatwas redzonedbythe Crown.
Implementation of the multiyear
regenerationareas, covering some 80
hectares, has been communityled in
partnership with residents, visitors,
businesses, mana whenua and central
Woodend School celebrating vape success
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Woodend School’s student leadersare
excited about changes to vaping
legislation.
In the changes announced on June 6, the
government said it would put astop to
vape shops opening within 300 metres of a
school or marae.
It would also cut downondisposable
vapes, restrict descriptions on product
flavours, and prohibit enticing names such
as ‘‘cotton candy’’and ‘‘strawberry jelly
donut’’.
PrincipalAndrew Retallick saysthe
announcement byHealth MinisterAyesha
Verrall, showed the stance by his student
leaders in speaking out had paid off.
Student leader Jasper Rosewarne
launched apetition earlierthis year, after
learning avape shop had opened across
the road from the school overthe summer
holidays, with the support of Mr Retallick
and the other studentleaders.
‘‘Jasper shared with us the government’s
moves aroundvapingand we had agood
discussion,’’ Mr Retallick says.
‘‘Itshows having the article in the paper
and beingonTVnews made adifference.
‘‘Wewere really happy when we learned
of the announcement itisagood start.’’
Jasper’s father,North Canterburybased
LabourList MP Dan Rosewarne, says
havingorganisations like Woodendand
Belfast Schools and the Cancer Society
speaking out, made it easiertomake a
case to the Health Minister for change.
‘‘It is agood shotinthe arm for the kids
at Woodend School,’’ he says.
But Rangiora High School principal
Bruce Kearney says the changesare too
little, too late.
‘‘The shops are already there. Are they
removing them?’’
Mr Kearney alsoquestioned the
restrictingofflavours.
‘‘Why do we need flavours?Ifitisa
vehicle to stop smoking there does not
need to be aflavour.’’
The Australiangovernmentrecently
announced aban on recreational vaping,
whilethe UnitedKingdomisconsidering
acrack down.
The New Zealand governmenthas ruled
out following suit, but Prime Minister
ChrisHipkins has directedthe Health
Minister to bring some suggestions to
Cabinet.
For now the government’s priority is on
the Smokefree 2025goal, focused on
tobacco.
