The buzzing of lawnmowers at speed caughtafew people by surprise on Sundaymorning at the Mandeville SportsGrounds. The Canterbury Lawn Mower Racing Club hostedit's first “Have agoday” for anyoneinterested in one of the fastestgrowing and cheapest forms of motorsportinthe country. ‘‘It’sall aboutfun, fun, fun,’’ says club president Don Saxon. The day was achance for drivers to try their handatnavigating the lowered rideon lawnmowers around aslippery grass track. ‘‘It’ssimply lotsoffun, you feel like you are doing a100kph when you are not, on the slipperygrass,’’says novice driverAndrew Simpson of Sefton. Lawnmower racing is new to North Canterbury. Interest in forming aclub started after workers fromthe Stihl Shops in Rangiora and Christchurchheard about what racers weredoing with rideons in the North Island. Club secretary Charmayne Stevens says they wereall sitting around the table one day whensomeone said: ‘‘Why don’t we hold arace here?’’ ‘‘Pretty soon everyone was on the same page, and thanks to awonderful Alan Gray who bought ten racing lawnmowersdown from the North Island to try out, we had awonderful day on SundayatMandeville introducingthe sport.’’ 150 lapswere completed on the day, with 22 new driverstrying it out for the first time.
