Coach Hong Kong bound By ROBYN BRISTOW Apassionate netballcoach,who has tastedsuccess in Otago and <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong>, has traded places on the sidelines of Rangiora, for the international coaching stageofHong Kong. Grahame Johnston, who most recentlyhas been coaching the Ohoka Premier side in the <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong> Netballcompetition, taking themto8out of 10 finals, over the past decade,will also develop aprogramme for regionalteams. ‘‘I am reallylooking forward to it. It will be agreat adventure. ‘‘I can’t wait to get overthere and get going,’’ Grahame said before leaving New Zealand shores on Monday. He takes with him awealth of experience and knowledge, having cut his teeth in the sport with some netball greats in the deep southbefore moving to <strong>Canterbury</strong>. Grahame says afriendhad seen the job advertised and sent it to him. ‘‘I appliedand went through an interview process, and was offered the job. Anew goal ... Grahamehas morethan 20 years of practical experience coaching at NPC level and age group representative teams in Otago and <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong>. He also has Sports SpecificCoaching in Netball (and othersports) to Level 3+. He has abackground in sport and recreation throughMassey University, and coachedthe Otago Under 21 netballteam and assisted withthe Otago NPC and representative teams alongside the late netball greatGeorgie Salter. Grahame’s coaching career began in rugby ‘‘yearsbefore’’his netballcoaching began. ‘‘I coached everything Icould coach in rugby, and won everything Iwent for,’’ he says. His coaching skills were called on when acoach was soughtfor a netballteam. He decided to give it ago, challenging himself to learn a new sport, and the skills required on the netballcourt. ‘‘It went reallywell, and Iended up coaching to representative level,’’ Grahame says. His work finallysaw him head north, where his skills were once again called on to coachOhoka. Grahamesays while Hong Kong is not headedtothe World Cup due to its ranking falling during Covid19, the aim is to lift it back into contentiontoclaim aspot in the next World Cup cycle. ‘‘They have potential as far as development and growth goes,’’ Grahamesays. Volunteers being sought By JOHN COSGROVE ParaFed <strong>Canterbury</strong>are seeking volunteers for the upcoming wheelchairbasketball tournamentheld over the weekend of July 8and 9. To help the organisers of the <strong>Canterbury</strong> roundofthe WheelchairBasketball New Zealand National League Tournament, ParaFed <strong>Canterbury</strong> are looking for a number of volunteers to help on both days from 8.30am to 4pm in various roles. This tasks include manning the scorebenchatgames, lunches and general volunteering. Basketball New Zealand’s disabilityand inclusion leadMatt Vernick says they need about 30 volunteers for the twoday event. <strong>North</strong><strong>Canterbury</strong> Basketball and Rapid Relief are also supporting thisevent. Matt says the scorebench volunteer roles are seated at a tableonthe halfwayline. The games are 10 minute quarters with the clockstopped during timeouts andstoppages in play. Further help is needed to prepare the lunches for all competitors eachday. Matt says the draw hasn’tbeen finalised yet, but they expect theretobeabout eight teams from around the country. ‘‘Teams are coming from Waikato, <strong>North</strong>land and Auckland, with three from <strong>Canterbury</strong>. ‘‘There will be some significant skills on display withanumber of former and currentNew Zealand international representative players like Daniella EgleBast, Travis Moffat and EamonWood who haveplayedinprofessional leagues in Australia and further abroad.’’ The <strong>Canterbury</strong> team has a number of playersfrom Rangiora including Travis Moffat, Tyler Belcher andCurtis Smith.
