February is Heart Month, which makes it a great time to take a step back and look at what changes we can make for a healthier lifestyle. A balanced, nutritious diet is a key factor when it comes to being heart smart. Why should we be especially concerned about heart disease? “Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains American’s No. 1 killer, still claiming more lives than the rest of major causes of death, according to the American Heart Association’s Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics - 2004 Update.” This is true for both men and women, despite popular misconceptions that breast cancer is more prevalent in women than heart disease. Of course, food is a central part of our culture. Family brings us together and food brings us even closer. “Generally speaking, our [Chaldean] food is considerably healthy,” said Providence Hospital cardiologist Dr. Wassim Nona. He notes, however, the importance of cooking with less fatty meats and oils. Using healthier fats such as olive oil is an easy way to make meals better for you. These days, we are constantly busy and on the go. This doesn’t mean, however, that it is impossible to maintain a healthy diet for you and your family. Registered Dietician Pamela Haddad has some suggestions. “Stews can be prepared with chicken or even vegetarian style, rather than with red meat. She recommends doing things like wrapping tabbouli with romaine lettuce, rather than with bread. Even when eating outside the home, healthy choices can be made as well. Order dishes that are baked or broiled, made with chicken, fish or lean meats. Good eating habits should begin at a young age. According to the American Heart Association, “In 2001, more than 130 million adult Americans (65.4 percent of the adult population) were overweight or obese. At the same time, 3.8 million children ages 6-11 and 5 million adolescents ages 12-19 were overweight or obese.” Haddad recommends staying away from simple sugars found in cakes and sweets. “It’s important to introduce children to lots of fruits and vegetables,” she said. It’s never too late to begin eating more sensibly. Trying new things can be fun, especially when you’re making an effort to improve your health. “Try vegetarian dolma using cracked wheat, chickpeas and other veggies instead of meat,” said Haddad. The good news is that everyone can do things to reduce their risk and feel great. Implement a regular workout regimen. “An active daily routine does not replace regular exercise such as walking on a treadmill or outside when the weather allows,” stated Dr. Nona. Stress levels are definitely a consideration as well. Exercising regularly helps to reduce stress levels and maintain a healthy heart. Dr. Nona stresses the value of avoiding fried, fatty foods and eating late at night. Late night eating greatly contributes to weight gain and obesity, which increases the risk for heart disease. He added, “Smoking cessation is an absolute must.” Creating awareness is only the first step. Making the necessary adjustments in diet and including exercise will get you on the road to living a better life.
