HOME PROFESSIONALS
Odd jobs for a
rainy day
Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean that you
can’t tackle your “to do” list. There are plenty
of inside jobs to maintain your home and keep
you busy.
Here are just some of those chores …
A small but important job is to check your
smoke alarms to see whether they are working
and make sure the detectors are clean and free
from obstruction.
With a quarter of heat being lost through
draughts in your home, take the time to fix any
gaps that might be letting the cold air in and
install draft stoppers on your doors.
Make an inventory of any other jobs that
might need fixing and what you’ll need to
make that happen. These could include
unclogging drains, fixing leaky taps or cracks
in plaster, or regrouting.
Think about whether you could change
your lighting to be more energy efficient even
if it’s just purchasing new LED bulbs. LED
light bulbs use up to 85% less electricity than
traditional incandescent or halogen bulbs and
can last 15 times longer. They can cost more
upfront – but the long-term savings of between
$100 and $300 per bulb makes them worth it.
One of the advantages of these bulbs is that
they provide not only good quality lighting but
also create instant brightness on a cold dark
day.
A simple job that can make a huge difference
is installing some new shelving whether it’s
in the kitchen, a glass shelf in the bathroom,
display cubes in the living area or bedroom.
Shelves not only help with storage but can also
create a visual impact on an empty wall.
Do you have a hallway or entrance to your
home that could be made more welcoming?
The addition of a coat rack or hooks, storage
area or a table and chairs can all make a
difference, depending on space restrictions.
Add a colourful door mat inside to set the tone
for your home’s décor.
Repainting the inside of your front door can
have a massive impact – try a bright colour to
add personality to co-ordinate with your new
door mat.
So, use that next wintry day to get some
of those jobs done. Just make sure you have
everything you need so you don’t need to go
out in the rain!
