Odd jobs for a<br />

rainy day<br />

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean that you<br />

can’t tackle your “to do” list. There are plenty<br />

of inside jobs to maintain your home and keep<br />

you busy.<br />

Here are just some of those chores …<br />

A small but important job is to check your<br />

smoke alarms to see whether they are working<br />

and make sure the detectors are clean and free<br />

from obstruction.<br />

With a quarter of heat being lost through<br />

draughts in your home, take the time to fix any<br />

gaps that might be letting the cold air in and<br />

install draft stoppers on your doors.<br />

Make an inventory of any other jobs that<br />

might need fixing and what you’ll need to<br />

make that happen. These could include<br />

unclogging drains, fixing leaky taps or cracks<br />

in plaster, or regrouting.<br />

Think about whether you could change<br />

your lighting to be more energy efficient even<br />

if it’s just purchasing new LED bulbs. LED<br />

light bulbs use up to 85% less electricity than<br />

traditional incandescent or halogen bulbs and<br />

can last 15 times longer. They can cost more<br />

upfront – but the long-term savings of between<br />

$100 and $300 per bulb makes them worth it.<br />

One of the advantages of these bulbs is that<br />

they provide not only good quality lighting but<br />

also create instant brightness on a cold dark<br />

day.<br />

A simple job that can make a huge difference<br />

is installing some new shelving whether it’s<br />

in the kitchen, a glass shelf in the bathroom,<br />

display cubes in the living area or bedroom.<br />

Shelves not only help with storage but can also<br />

create a visual impact on an empty wall.<br />

Do you have a hallway or entrance to your<br />

home that could be made more welcoming?<br />

The addition of a coat rack or hooks, storage<br />

area or a table and chairs can all make a<br />

difference, depending on space restrictions.<br />

Add a colourful door mat inside to set the tone<br />

for your home’s décor.<br />

Repainting the inside of your front door can<br />

have a massive impact – try a bright colour to<br />

add personality to co-ordinate with your new<br />

door mat.<br />

So, use that next wintry day to get some<br />

of those jobs done. Just make sure you have<br />

everything you need so you don’t need to go<br />

out in the rain!<br />
