Like father, like daughter
Olympic goal now in
sight for 21-year-old cyclist
LEGACY: Sami Donnelly’s father, Nigel (left) won gold in the men’s team pursuit at the 1990 Commonwealth Games alongside Glenn McLeay,
Stuart Williams and Gary Anderson. Sami has just been selected in the New Zealand team for the world championships.
SAMI DONNELLY has
dreamed of becoming an
Olympian like her father since
she was a child.
Following her selection in the
New Zealand team for August’s
UCI track cycling World
Championships in Glasgow, the
goal is finally within reach.
It couldn’t be more fitting
that Donnelly is a reserve for
the team pursuit at the world’s
biggest cycling event a year out
from the Paris Olympics – the
same category her father Nigel
competed in at both the 1988
and 1992 Olympics.
“Ever since I was little, I
dreamed of following in my
dad’s footsteps,” the former
Burnside High student said.
“I had my sights set on these
worlds since last year and
trained pretty hard through
our summer. We, as a squad,
have power targets for worlds
and Paris, so I knew on paper
what I was aiming for.”
Donnelly is one of 17
athletes selected in the New
Zealand squad for this year’s
competition. The squad
includes several Olympic
medallists, such as fellow
Cantabrian Ellesse Andrews.
However, Donnelly admits her
father wasn’t the first to hear
of her selection, but rather her
mother Lyndall.
“I texted my mum straight
away as she had been nagging
me all day if I had any news yet.
“I then had to carry on
through the rest of my gym
session before I called my dad
and Jayden (my partner) and
then I messaged his family
confidentially, who I have been
living with up in Cambridge.”
The 21-year-old joins 2022
Commonwealth Games
silver medallists Bryony
Botha, Michaela Drummond
and Emily Shearman in the
women’s endurance squad
alongside other new addition
Ally Wollaston.
No more police for Hornby
• By Bella Craig
HORNBY RESIDENTS won’t be
getting more police which they
say are needed to fight crime in
the suburb.
That was the key message to
come out of a public meeting last
week, prompted by residents’
concerns over the level of crime
in Hornby.
Canterbury District Metro
Commander, Superintendent
Lane Todd, told
the meeting
there was a
greater need for
police in the
city’s eastern
suburbs where
crime was a lot
Lane Todd
higher.
Todd suggested
residents
could join a volunteer community
patrol. He said members
of the community can volunteer
for four hours a month for community
patrol.
“It only takes 10-12 minutes of
high visibility in an area that is
experiencing a problem to make
a change.”
Residents attending the meeting
were not happy with Todd’s
response, saying they felt ignored
from a police point of view.
The Greater Hornby Residents
Association, which organised the
meeting, presented a petition to
Todd with 1000 signatures over
police resourcing. It called for
the Hornby police station to be
manned 24/7.
Staffing at the station has been
an ongoing issue. In November
last year, the station was reopened
after it was closed until
further notice in February.
Todd told the meeting after receiving
the petition: “If I looked
at where the resources need to
be right now, currently there are
higher crime rates in the Linwood
and Eastgate areas.”
Police crime data shows the
rate of thefts, burglaries and
other related offences throughout
the Hornby Ward have
increased by 46 per cent to April,
compared to last year.
Ram-raids, thefts and burglaries
are the crimes worrying
residents in Hornby, Hei Hei,
Islington, Yaldhurst, Sockburn
STAFFING ISSUES:
Residents want the
Hornby police station
to be manned 24/7 but
Superintendent Lane Todd
said the resources are
needed more in eastern
areas.
and Templeton.
Previous residents’ association
chair Marc Duff was one of the
organisers of the petition.
Said Duff: “As more and more
happens, the fear that they’re
going to be the next victim
increases.”
He said Todd’s response to
the petition was “the response I
expected”.
“I think we’re going to have a
long battle, but it’s a battle worth
having because the need for it is
going to get bigger,” he said.
Duff said although there was a
need for more police in the area,
getting people to volunteer for a
community patrol will help the
issue.
The residents’ association,
as well as various community
groups represented at the
meeting, such as Canterbury
Neighbourhood Support, plan to
present the residents’ concerns to
the city council.
PURSUIT: Ever since
she was a child,
Sami Donnelly has
wanted to follow in
her Olympian father’s
footsteps. Right – she
was part of the team
that claimed silver in
the women’s pursuit
at the Nations Cup in
Egypt in March.
Sami’s childhood dream within grasp
• From page 1
Because of a different schedule
than previous years, Donnelly
will also have the opportunity to
ride in the individual pursuit and
potentially the scratch race.
“I have always loved the
individual pursuit and recently
placed fourth at Oceania Championships,”
she said.
Donnelly said making the team
was always “plan A” for her, as
the World Championships is a
key qualification event ahead of
the 2024 Olympics.
“This is being called the ‘mega
worlds’ – with all cycling events
in one place at the same time it
is going to be a pretty busy few
weeks for everyone involved,”
she said.
“This is also a really good
chance for me to experience the
pressures of an event like this, as
we get taught how to ride fast but
you can’t really understand the
pressures of race day until you
live and experience those events.”
Although it will be Donnelly’s
first World Championship
appearance, she has already
impressed on the international
stage this year – and claimed a
silver medal in the women’s team
pursuit at both the Nations Cup
and Oceania Championships in
March.
“As members of our squad have
said before, the word ‘potential’
has been used heaps for the New
Zealand women’s team pursuit.
“It is so inspiring for me to see
the top four girls pushing those
limits, breaking national records
and I definitely use it as motivation
in training so I can line up
confidently beside them.”
Friendly gym provides a sense of belonging
For those people considering joining
a gym but are not sure if it’s for them,
Wigram Culture Fitness offers an
experience unlike any other.
As owner Heather Peterson explains:
“We have created an environment at
our gym in Wigram that is supportive.
Our members come from a wide
range of ages, from fathers and sons
to mothers and daughters, through to
husbands and wives in their 80s.
“Our gym provides a sense of
belonging and an environment where
everyone feels welcome and part of the
Culture Fitness family.
“We have various workout zones and
gym facilities and, in conjunction with
these, our gym offers Express Fitness
Lanes combined with the Fitness App
Myzone.”
Finding the best gym can be compared
to forging a new relationship. With a bit
of personal reflection, pre-planning,
and some vetting, you will be on the
path to what could be a match made in
heaven (at least when it comes to this
key element of your fitness journey).
Remember, you are investing your
time, money, and energy into a gym,
and you need to be certain that you
have made the best choice for you
and your training goals. You may be
enticed to base your decision on online
reviews or friends’ recommendations,
and while that’s an excellent starting
point, there should be a few more
components to consider. Here at
Wigram Culture fitness we want you to
come in and have a look around, and
make sure we are the best fit for your
Fitness Journey.
“People are sometimes fearful of being
watched and judged at a gym,” Heather
says, “but Wigram Culture Fitness is
not like that. We’re full of locals of all
shapes and sizes, ages and ethnicities.
“Everyone is on a different journey,
so come and share yours with us and
discover a really friendly, supportive
environment.”
Kai and conversation
a chance to connect
• By Briar Allen
AN INITIATIVE that came
out of the 2019 mosque attacks
will be held in St Albans this
weekend.
Share Kai, a collaborative
project between InCommon and
Mahia Te Aroha, is focused on
communities being more inclusive
– over food.
InCommon
project manager
Holly Griffin said
the event gets
people to connect.
“Especially
those we might
Holly
Griffin
assume we have
nothing in common
with because
we look different,” she said.
The event at the St Albans
Community Centre on features
the Nepali Share Kai group, followed
by the Eritrean group on
July 8 and the Afghan group on
July 22 (all from 10am to noon).
They will each serve brunch
of traditional food and drink,
ranging from dumplings, to coffee,
hot chai and curry.
“We have been planning this
for a year, but Covid-19 delayed
our plans, so now seemed the
perfect time to connect,” said
Griffin.
GET TOGETHER: Diners connect at the Eritrean Share Kai
night earlier this year.
“Share Kai features the
Nepali, Eritrean and Afghan
communities that call
Christchurch home but may not
be well known.”
She said the first time they
held the event earlier this year
it was very popular, with 600
attending.
The events are open to the
public.
“It is not just about the
great food; these events are
an opportunity for people to
connect and learn about others.
We want to continue to make
our communities inclusive.”
People can bring their own
container to the St Albans
Community Centre if they wish
to take food away. Prices will
range from $5 and $12 with
vegan, gluten free and halal
options available. Cash only.
UP CLOSE: Burnside High School students learn about the
Defence visit
expands horizons
Burnside High School students
were fortunate enough to learn
about the inner workings of a
New Zealand Defence Force
helicopter earlier this month.
Invited students got the chance
to watch the Air Force A109 helicopter
land on the school field
and were able to step inside the
helicopter and view first-hand
the complexity and sophistication
of its controls.
Students also had the opportunity
to engage with members of
the New Zealand Defence Force,
who discussed the helicopter’s
capabilities and its role in the
defence force operations.
The visit served as a valuable
learning experience for students,
as they gained insights into the
world of the defence force and
the various career paths it offers.
The public feud between two of
SAINT: Nurse
Sibylla Maude
started what
would become
New Zealand’s
district nurse
programme.
TWO OF the city’s favourite
daughters once went head to
head in a public scrap that was
rather unbecoming of their
status as ‘saints in the making’.
The redoubtable nurse Sibylla
Emily Maude – originator
of what would become New
Zealand’s district nurse
programme and this country’s
answer to Florence Nightingale
– took on women’s suffragist
and mother of the nation,
Kate Sheppard, in a public
disagreement which resonated
in the letters to the editor pages
of the Christchurch Star and the
Lyttelton Times over the last few
days of 1898.
The interaction features in
Judith Devaliant’s book Kate
Sheppard: A Biography.
“The issue concerned an
anonymous woman who
had had the misfortune of
contracting what was clearly
a rather nasty disease,” says
Helen Osborne, property lead
for Te Whare Waiutuutu Kate
Sheppard House.
Kate Sheppard’s Ilam home is
today cared for by Heritage New
Zealand Pouhere Taonga.
“Suffragist Kate Sheppard
and fellow women’s advocate
Ada Wells wrote a letter to the
editor highlighting the plight of
the woman and her family and
describing her condition as ‘a
disease of loathsome form, the
details of which are so revolting
they cannot be here explained’.
The zealous duo petitioned
for the removal of the two sons
of the woman in question so
they could be lodged elsewhere
in healthier surroundings as
the boys were unable to isolate
themselves within the rather
pokey confines of their cottage.
They argued the sons were in
danger of becoming “a fruitful
source of contamination to
those with whom they come in
contact”.
Because the mother’s
condition was a chronic one,
the Charitable Aid Board had
advised it had done all it could
reasonably do. Both Sheppard
and Wells asked people to send
money to the newspaper to
help out if they possibly could,
adding “much could be said of
the pitiful life of the children
brought into hourly contact
with hideous disease, but we
refrain”.
“From 1885 all hospitals
were run by Charitable Aid
Boards whose role was partly
to assess patients to determine
whether they could pay for their
treatment. People assessed as
‘paupers’ were treated for free,”
says Osborne.
“Boards and some members
of the public were quick to
expose people they believed
were ripping off the system. The
way patients were perceived by
the Charitable Aid Boards was
very important. Sensitivities
about communicable diseases,
including venereal disease,
made public health and fair
access to treatment a hot
issue that left many women
particularly vulnerable.”
The Lyttelton Times started to
receive donations as a result of
the letter, and before long, it also
received another contribution
from a reader – a letter from
Maude, who had a few things to
say about the original Sheppard/
Wells letter. And when Maude
said something, people had a
tendency to sit up and listen.
the city’s most powerful women
Maude announced in her letter
that she knew the woman in
question because – even though
the patient wasn’t identified by
Sheppard and Wells – it was
obvious who they were referring
to. She also said the woman had
been under her personal care for
years.
And then she got stuck in:
“The unfortunate sufferer is
much distressed at the publicity
now sought to be given, first
without her knowledge or
consent, and secondly because
of the incorrect and alarming
statements circulated as to the
alleged contagious nature of her
complaint,” she wrote, adding
that the patient hadn’t actually
talked to anyone about her
plight, not least Sheppard and
Wells.
“She is not ‘lying prostrated
from a disease of loathsome
form’. She is able to walk about,
enjoy fresh air, and I have
taken her out and sent her for
a drive, which I should be very
unlikely to do if her condition
were ‘a fruitful source of
contamination’.”
Maude also advised that
the patient had refused any
additional help beyond what she
“receives already from private
friends and the Charitable Aid
Board” and that her sons were all
healthy and in no danger from
infection.
The letter was followed by a
CONTRIBUTION: Kate Sheppard was the leader of New
Zealand’s women’s suffrage movement.
note from the editor advising
that donations would be
returned to readers should it be
found that the woman and her
three sons were the ones at the
centre of the original letter –
such was Maude’s mana.
It seemed that maybe this
storm in the Royal Doulton
teacup might be over. Until
the zealous Kate and Ada
double-downed on their original
assertions in a second letter that
appeared in the paper a couple of
days later.
“We have no wish to enter
upon a controversy with Miss
Maude whose “amour propre”
[self esteem] as professional
nurse seems to have been
wounded,” they wrote.
“Our object in writing to you
was to obtain healthy conditions
for the children.”
They also challenged Maude’s
medical assessment with the
contrary view of an unnamed
“medical man” they consulted.
They also had a wee dig at
Maude’s assertion that the two
hadn’t actually talked to the
woman concerned.
“Miss Maude endeavours to
throw doubt on our statement
that we called at the cottage . . .
we are sorry she should have so
poor an opinion of our veracity.”
The letters to the editor page – a
slower, and only slightly more
genteel 19th-century version
of Facebook – drew further
comment from readers keen
to wade in. One ‘troll’ signing
themselves as ‘A Rank Outsider’,
for example, suggested “a little
closer inquiry and a glance at
a medical dictionary [by Mrs
Sheppard and Mrs Wells] might
have saved a certain poor sufferer
a heartache instead of adding to
her suffering.”
And there the matter appears
to have landed – a brief though
very public spat between two of
colonial New Zealand’s foremost
female movers and shakers. The
clash is revealing, Osborne said.
“The debate illustrates the
very different approaches taken
by these women to the pressing
social issues of the day – in this
case healthcare,” she says.
“Both were on the same ‘side’
and shared common values. Kate
Sheppard and Nurse Maude were
both strong Christians with a
very solid social conscience and
sense of duty to the community,
the poor and the welfare of
women in particular. The fact
that their different approaches
appear to have put them at
loggerheads in this situation is
fascinating.”
Politically astute Sheppard
– the reformer and advocate
– was interested in changing
institutional structures that
kept women and their families
poor and powerless. Nurse
Maude’s approach was to roll up
her sleeves and help. Sheppard
affected lasting institutional
change by skilfully building up
networks of influence around
the country and the world.
Maude crammed every waking
hour with hands-on service
to the poor and dispossessed,
fuelled by compassion and bacon
sandwiches, and in her latter
years terrorising motorists in a
donated car with her somewhat
loose interpretation of the road
code as she went about her
rounds.
“The two women epitomised
policy v practical help; strategy
versus sympathy. Both were
reformers in their different ways
and both left a lasting legacy,”
says Osborne.
When Sheppard died in 1934,
the Christchurch Times wrote:
“A great woman has gone, whose
name will remain an inspiration
to the daughters of New Zealand
while our history endures.”
A year later, almost to the
day, Maude passed away. Loved
by countless patients and their
families, hundreds of mourners
lined the streets as her funeral
procession passed by.
A word from Ilam MP
Sarah
Pallett
Having a warm home is an essential
part of preventing respiratory
illnesses through the winter season
and lowers the risk of other health
issues. But the cost can be a real
barrier.
That’s why we’re continuing to
support over a million Kiwis with the
Winter Energy Payment. I’ve heard
from many constituents what a relief
it is to not have to worry so much
about turning the heating off to save
on power bills.
When I worked as a midwife, I saw
first-hand what it means to be unable
to heat your home. To have to choose
between getting a prescription filled
or buying a few loaves of bread.
Therefore, when Finance Minister
Grant Robertson came before caucus
and told us that we were going to be
scrapping the $5 prescription fee, I
felt quite emotional because I know
what a massive difference this is
going to make to the health of our
people.
We know that more than 135,000
adults did not collect their
medications because of cost in
2021-22. But when people are able
to pick up all of the medication
that their doctor has prescribed for
them, it reduces the chance of small
issues becoming big problems that
require hospitalisation. This eases the
pressure on our health system, which
benefits everyone.
I know that these actions, alongside
our recent 1 April income boosts,
will help many families make ends
meet and stay healthy over the winter
months.
As always, I’m here to help. Please get
in touch on 0800 727 224 or pop into
the office if you need any assistance.
LocaL Businesses
supporting their local community
Hornby restaurant offers more
choices and familiar favourites
Thousands of Christchurch families will
have fond memories of enjoying the tasty
food and friendly vibe of Valentines buffet
restaurant, which was located for many
years in the central city.
A New Zealand-wide franchise operation,
the business went through many changes
over the years, then with new owners taking
over the company six years ago, it gained a
new momentum.
A third franchise was set up in Auckland,
its Rotorua restaurant reopened, and in July
2019, Valentines Christchurch opened at a
new location – Chalmers Street, Hornby.
As company director Ron Lal explains,
Valentines has a rich history in Kiwi culture
and they wanted to retain that feeling of
nostalgia, but with some new concepts
added to the mix.
“We wanted to offer our customers a new
experience that’s up with the times, and
with a modern twist on hospitality.
“Customers have a lot more choice of
food now,” he says, “for example you can
choose your own meat, which will be
cooked individually for you. We offer a big
selection of dishes, seafood and desserts,
and of course there are the familiar
favourites that the children love, like the
chocolate fountain and an endless supply of
ice-cream.
“We want to wow the customers and
at the same time we want to create that
nostalgic Valentines feel.”
The Valentines tradition of a free meal
for a customer on their birthday has been
upgraded to a celebratory birthday treat
and, of course, with the famous birthday
song being sung by staff, too. Families are
also invited to take advantage of the school
Plenty of hot,
appetising dishes
to choose from at
Valentines
holiday special from time to time. During
the holidays, one child under the age of
eight gets a free lunch if accompanied by a
full paying adult. (T’s & C’s apply.)
Valentines has always been seen as a
100 per cent family restaurant, a tradition
that the new Valentines team is keen to
continue, but Valentines is also a restaurant
for everyone, from families to couples,
to friends getting together to celebrate a
special occasion.
Situated in the heart of the Hornby
shopping precinct, not only is Valentines
the ideal place for people from the Hornby
community to enjoy tasty food and a warm,
friendly vibe, it also employs local staff, who
are treated well and therefore enjoy working
there and giving their customers the best
possible service.
Valentines is open seven days a week,
from 10am till late. Outside the buffet
times they also do the popular Valentines
Shareboxes, which offer a range of
amazing dishes.
Delicious desserts
to satisfy those
with a sweet tooth.
Glentui Camp - Year 7
The Year 7 students had their camp at Glentui on the
Wednesday 3rd May through to Friday 5th of May.
On the first day the Year 7 students arrived at Glentui, they all
sorted their gear into their bunk rooms. Then we were taken
up the road to the base of Mt Richardson. The students made
it about half way up Mt Richardson when it started to drizzle
and the call was made to head back down for safety. That
evening the students had the opportunity to enjoy roasting
marshmallows. On the second day the students broke up
into their activity groups. They rotated around Archery Tag,
Scavenger Hunt, Games and the River Walk. In the evening the
students played Minute to Win it, congratulations to all those
that finished the challenges. On the final day, we all cleaned
the Glentui Bunkrooms and prepared to leave.
Check out some of the students responses below:
What was your highlight from the Year 7 Glentui Camp?
• My highlight of the Glentui Camp was the spotlight game
because we finally bet the teachers and we bet them 3
times.
• To find a giant spider because I like spiders and I found a
VERY LARGE one.
• My highlight from the Glentui Camp was when we were
walking up Mount Richardson and there was lots of mud
unlike everyone else who had to avoid it. I was able to walk
right through cause I was wearing my hiking boots.
• My highlight from the Glentui Camp was the spotlight game
because it was very enjoyable and I was using others to hide
behind to get closer.
• My highlight from the Glentui Camp was the river walk
because we made a dam with rocks and when we made it
I fell in.
What surprised you at the Glentui Camp?
• Something that surprised me at the Glentui Camp was
how nice the mattresses were at camp because usually
the mattresses are so uncomfy but they were super duper
comfortable and they were easy to sleep on.
• Something that surprised me at Glentui Camp was how hard
it was to walk up and down the stairs to the river because it
was very tiring and up and down Mount Richardson.
• Something that surprised me at Glentui Camp was the food.
It surprised me because it was so yummy and filling. Another
thing that surprised me was all the cool things the teachers
hosted like minute to win it and how the teachers managed
all the activities except archery tag.
What challenged you the most at Glentui Camp?
• Something that challenged me at Glentui Camp was the
stairs because we have to walk down and up again for the
roasting marshmallows and playing spotlight on the second
night.
• The activity that most challenged me was the Scavenger
Hunt. This was because I had a very hard time climbing up
the stairs and down the stairs multiple times with our group.
Although it really did test my fitness level, I was completely
drained afterwards. Not to mention that we had to climb the
stairs several times daily.
• Something that challenged me at Glentui camp was walking
up and down the stairs constantly and feeling like I was
going to die.
Bully Free Week
An initiative aimed at
promoting kindness, respect,
and understanding among
students. This event, which
took place throughout
New Zealand, was an
incredible success at
our school, thanks to the
collective efforts of our
dedicated staff, supportive
parents, students council, and,
most importantly, our amazing
students.
Bully-Free Week served as a
reminder of the importance
of fostering a safe and
inclusive environment for
every child in our school
community. Throughout the
week, our students engaged
in various activities and
discussions designed to
raise awareness about
bullying and its impact.
They actively participated
in workshops, role-playing
exercises, and classroom
discussions, where they
learned about empathy,
conflict resolution, and
the power of standing up
against bullying.
A special mention to the schools Senior Student
Council as they planned and implemented a
number of activities in their lunchtimes for all of
the students at Oaklands. It made the week a huge
success and by doing this, it brought a lot of smiles
and warmth to our school.
Our Chickens Have Arrived!
All 4 chickens are happy and healthy living in their lovely wee
coop.
Welcome to Butter, Bob, Luigi and Queen Lizzy.
Students will take turns taking care of the chickens over the
coming weeks, at the moment the Year 8 team will have their
turn this term, and then we will work our way down the school.
We are so excited for this opportunity and we appreciate the
support the school has given us in order to have the chickens
which will provide such an amazing opportunity for our
students to learn and grow.

Nissan’s Qashqai a strong performer
THE QASHQAI compact
urban SUV, with its inventive
fuel-saving low emission hybrid
technology, is a breakthrough
model for Nissan in this part of
the world.
In Europe and the UK, they
love the Qashqai. On this side of
the world it is, at best, a steady
seller. The company is expecting
big things from this latest model,
offering a big step up in refinement,
safety and technology
– and unfortunately prices, compared
to the vehicle it replaces.
Affordability could be an
issue with the entry level ST
kicking off at $45,990 – $8000
more than the outgoing model.
There’s no hiding the fact this is
a big increase over the previous
version, even allowing for major
advances on every front.
The new Qashqai offers plenty
of technology, leading edge
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
safety features, and a more
sophisticated multi-link rear
suspension set-up across every
model. There’s more variety in
the powertrain department, with
a new and feisty 1.3-litre turbo
petrol, and the option of Nissan’s
innovative e-POWER hybrid system.
This carries a $7000 price
premium over the turbo petrol
motor.
Petrol, not e-power, dominates
the six-strong model range,
comprising four petrol variants
starting with the $45,995 ST and
stretching all the way to $56,990
for the flagship Ti-L. E power
is limited to the upmarket Ti
and Ti-L priced at $59,990 and
$65,680 respectively. The latter
was supplied for this road test.
Second-generation e-POWER
technology pairs the effortless
acceleration and the refined
performance of an electric motor.
It’s a strong high-energy
performer with 140kw of power
and 330nm of torque to take
command of most driving scenarios.
Thanks to a pure electric
motor, there’s none of the powerdelivery
hesitancy associated
with an internal combustion
engine or traditional hybrid setups.
Instant response provides a
high-torque feel and exhilarating
acceleration, on lower fuel use
and emissions.
The e-POWER system delivers
its torque almost instantly,
enhancing the vehicle’s responsiveness.
A new-generation CVT
(Constant Variable Transmission)
has three drive modes – Eco, Normal
and Sport – and is a huge improvement
on the lethargic CVT
that blunted the performance of
the previous model.
For a compact SUV, this one is
roomier than most with plenty of
passenger and load space.
There’s a panoramic glass roof
and electric sunshade. Cabin
technology features a 10.8-inch
colour head-up display, and a
premium 10-speaker BOSE audio
system. A motion activated
tailgate is great if you’re juggling
an armful of groceries in the
supermarket car park.
Nissan Intelligent Mobility
safety features are impressive. It
includes intelligent cruise control
and forward emergency braking,
plus pedestrian, cyclist and junction
detection capabilities. High
beam assist makes DIY dipping
of your headlights at night for oncoming
traffic a thing of the past.
A lot of hype surrounds
the new Qashqai’s advanced
multi-link rear suspension. The
upside with this suspension
set-up is a stronger connection
between driver, vehicle and road,
and that’s a good thing. Wellcontrolled
body-roll, comfort
and the effective isolation of
road noise and vibrations from
the passenger compartment are
among the best in the compact
urban SUV class.
Budget 2023 is
DELIVERING
In this year’s Hipkins Labour Budget
we really looked for practical things
that could help lessen the pinch
I know many of us in the Wigram
electorate are feeling.
Reducing the amount households
pay for prescriptions, early childhood
education, power bills and bus fares
are all measures I know will assist
many Wigram people.
for Wigram
With Budget 2023, we’re:
• Making it easier for Kiwis to access medicines they
need by scrapping the $5 co-payment.
• Increasing the paid parental leave entitlements and
expanding the 20 hours free ECE to now include twoyear-olds
to better support families.
• Reducing power bills through 100,000 more
Warmer Kiwi Homes nationwide.
• Targeting free public transport for under-13s and
half price public transport for under-25s.
Hon Megan Woods MP for Wigram

Co-payment scrapped
We know that people are finding it tough
right now and removing the $5 charge
for prescriptions is just one way we have
committed to ensuring households can
have more money in their back pocket.
I’ve had many conversations with local
Wigram pharmacists who have said this
change will allow more families to access
the medicines they need.

Budget 2023
Budget 2023 is a practical budget that does the
basics well, while making investments where they
are needed most.
Cost of living support was a major focus for
us when creating Budget 2023. We know that
practical solutions such as scrapping the $5
co-payment and expanding childcare for 2 year
olds will help put more money in your back pocket.
We also understand that we need to do more
than just respond to the challenges of today, we
need to build for the future which is why we are
investing in infrastructure, skills, science and
technology to support every area of the economy.
I’m proud to be part of Government that is putting
Kiwis at the forefront and is supporting people
now while securing their future.
