Thursday June 29 2023 7 Kai and conversation a chance to connect • By Briar Allen AN INITIATIVE that came out of the 2019 mosque attacks will be held in St Albans this weekend. Share Kai, a collaborative project between InCommon and Mahia Te Aroha, is focused on communities being more inclusive – over food. InCommon project manager Holly Griffin said the event gets people to connect. “Especially those we might Holly Griffin assume we have nothing in common with because we look different,” she said. The event at the St Albans Community Centre on features the Nepali Share Kai group, followed by the Eritrean group on July 8 and the Afghan group on July 22 (all from 10am to noon). They will each serve brunch of traditional food and drink, ranging from dumplings, to coffee, hot chai and curry. “We have been planning this for a year, but Covid-19 delayed our plans, so now seemed the perfect time to connect,” said Griffin. GET TOGETHER: Diners connect at the Eritrean Share Kai night earlier this year. “Share Kai features the Nepali, Eritrean and Afghan communities that call Christchurch home but may not be well known.” She said the first time they held the event earlier this year it was very popular, with 600 attending. The events are open to the public. “It is not just about the great food; these events are an opportunity for people to connect and learn about others. We want to continue to make our communities inclusive.” People can bring their own container to the St Albans Community Centre if they wish to take food away. Prices will range from $5 and $12 with vegan, gluten free and halal options available. Cash only. UP CLOSE: Burnside High School students learn about the inner workings of an Air Force A109 helicopter. Defence visit expands horizons Burnside High School students were fortunate enough to learn about the inner workings of a New Zealand Defence Force helicopter earlier this month. Invited students got the chance to watch the Air Force A109 helicopter land on the school field and were able to step inside the helicopter and view first-hand the complexity and sophistication of its controls. Students also had the opportunity to engage with members of the New Zealand Defence Force, who discussed the helicopter’s capabilities and its role in the defence force operations.
