Thursday June 29 2023 3 No more police for Hornby • By Bella Craig HORNBY RESIDENTS won’t be getting more police which they say are needed to fight crime in the suburb. That was the key message to come out of a public meeting last week, prompted by residents’ concerns over the level of crime in Hornby. Canterbury District Metro Commander, Superintendent Lane Todd, told the meeting there was a greater need for police in the city’s eastern suburbs where crime was a lot Lane Todd higher. Todd suggested residents could join a volunteer community patrol. He said members of the community can volunteer for four hours a month for community patrol. “It only takes 10-12 minutes of high visibility in an area that is experiencing a problem to make a change.” Residents attending the meeting were not happy with Todd’s response, saying they felt ignored from a police point of view. The Greater Hornby Residents Association, which organised the meeting, presented a petition to Todd with 1000 signatures over police resourcing. It called for the Hornby police station to be manned 24/7. Staffing at the station has been an ongoing issue. In November last year, the station was reopened after it was closed until further notice in February. Todd told the meeting after receiving the petition: “If I looked at where the resources need to be right now, currently there are higher crime rates in the Linwood and Eastgate areas.” Police crime data shows the rate of thefts, burglaries and other related offences throughout the Hornby Ward have increased by 46 per cent to April, compared to last year. Previous residents’ association chair Marc Duff was one of the organisers of the petition. Said Duff: “As more and more happens, the fear that they’re going to be the next victim increases.” He said Todd’s response to the petition was “the response I expected”. “I think we’re going to have a long battle, but it’s a battle worth having because the need for it is going to get bigger,” he said. Duff said although there was a need for more police in the area, getting people to volunteer for a community patrol will help the issue. The residents’ association, as well as various community groups represented at the meeting, such as Canterbury Neighbourhood Support, plan to present the residents’ concerns to the city council.
