10 Thursday June 29 2023 LocaL Businesses supporting their local community Hornby restaurant offers more choices and familiar favourites Thousands of Christchurch families will have fond memories of enjoying the tasty food and friendly vibe of Valentines buffet restaurant, which was located for many years in the central city. A New Zealand-wide franchise operation, the business went through many changes over the years, then with new owners taking over the company six years ago, it gained a new momentum. A third franchise was set up in Auckland, its Rotorua restaurant reopened, and in July 2019, Valentines Christchurch opened at a new location – Chalmers Street, Hornby. As company director Ron Lal explains, Valentines has a rich history in Kiwi culture and they wanted to retain that feeling of nostalgia, but with some new concepts added to the mix. “We wanted to offer our customers a new experience that’s up with the times, and with a modern twist on hospitality. “Customers have a lot more choice of food now,” he says, “for example you can choose your own meat, which will be cooked individually for you. We offer a big selection of dishes, seafood and desserts, and of course there are the familiar favourites that the children love, like the chocolate fountain and an endless supply of ice-cream. “We want to wow the customers and at the same time we want to create that nostalgic Valentines feel.” The Valentines tradition of a free meal for a customer on their birthday has been upgraded to a celebratory birthday treat and, of course, with the famous birthday song being sung by staff, too. Thursday June 29 2023 11 We are lifelong learners who aspire to excellence Term 2 Highlights 2023 37 Cunningham Pl, Halswell | Ph. 03 322 8735 E. admin@oaklands.school.nz | www.oaklands.school.nz ANZAC Day - 25th April 2023 On Tuesday, at 9.00am on April 25th, a Service of Remembrance was held at the Halswell Domain Memorial to honour those who served and for those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice of their lives. It was a wonderful community event and Te Kura o Ōwaka was very well represented with ākonga involved in St John’s Cadets, Guides, Scouts and Brownies. Emily and Lucy Trevathan, Emilia Montague-Ebbs and the Head Students all laid wreaths as part of the service. Glentui Camp - Year 7 The Year 7 students had their camp at Glentui on the Wednesday 3rd May through to Friday 5th of May. On the first day the Year 7 students arrived at Glentui, they all sorted their gear into their bunk rooms. Then we were taken up the road to the base of Mt Richardson. The students made it about half way up Mt Richardson when it started to drizzle and the call was made to head back down for safety. That evening the students had the opportunity to enjoy roasting marshmallows. On the second day the students broke up into their activity groups. They rotated around Archery Tag, Scavenger Hunt, Games and the River Walk. In the evening the students played Minute to Win it, congratulations to all those that finished the challenges. On the final day, we all cleaned the Glentui Bunkrooms and prepared to leave. Check out some of the students responses below: What was your highlight from the Year 7 Glentui Camp? • My highlight of the Glentui Camp was the spotlight game because we finally bet the teachers and we bet them 3 times. • To find a giant spider because I like spiders and I found a VERY LARGE one. • My highlight from the Glentui Camp was when we were walking up Mount Richardson and there was lots of mud unlike everyone else who had to avoid it. I was able to walk right through cause I was wearing my hiking boots. • My highlight from the Glentui Camp was the spotlight game because it was very enjoyable and I was using others to hide behind to get closer. • My highlight from the Glentui Camp was the river walk because we made a dam with rocks and when we made it I fell in. What surprised you at the Glentui Camp? • Something that surprised me at the Glentui Camp was how nice the mattresses were at camp because usually the mattresses are so uncomfy but they were super duper comfortable and they were easy to sleep on. • Something that surprised me at Glentui Camp was how hard it was to walk up and down the stairs to the river because it was very tiring and up and down Mount Richardson. • Something that surprised me at Glentui Camp was the food. It surprised me because it was so yummy and filling. Another thing that surprised me was all the cool things the teachers hosted like minute to win it and how the teachers managed all the activities except archery tag. What challenged you the most at Glentui Camp? • Something that challenged me at Glentui Camp was the stairs because we have to walk down and up again for the roasting marshmallows and playing spotlight on the second night. • The activity that most challenged me was the Scavenger Hunt. This was because I had a very hard time climbing up the stairs and down the stairs multiple times with our group. Although it really did test my fitness level, I was completely drained afterwards. Not to mention that we had to climb the stairs several times daily. • Something that challenged me at Glentui camp was walking up and down the stairs constantly and feeling like I was going to die. Bully Free Week An initiative aimed at promoting kindness, respect, and understanding among students. This event, which took place throughout New Zealand, was an incredible success at our school, thanks to the collective efforts of our dedicated staff, supportive parents, students council, and, most importantly, our amazing students. Bully-Free Week served as a reminder of the importance of fostering a safe and inclusive environment for every child in our school community. Throughout the week, our students engaged in various activities and discussions designed to raise awareness about bullying and its impact. They actively participated in workshops, role-playing exercises, and classroom discussions, where they learned about empathy, conflict resolution, and the power of standing up against bullying. A special mention to the schools Senior Student Council as they planned and implemented a number of activities in their lunchtimes for all of the students at Oaklands. It made the week a huge success and by doing this, it brought a lot of smiles and warmth to our school. Our Chickens Have Arrived! All 4 chickens are happy and healthy living in their lovely wee coop. Welcome to Butter, Bob, Luigi and Queen Lizzy. Students will take turns taking care of the chickens over the coming weeks, at the moment the Year 8 team will have their turn this term, and then we will work our way down the school. We are so excited for this opportunity and we appreciate the support the school has given us in order to have the chickens which will provide such an amazing opportunity for our students to learn and grow.
