Davidson resigns
as community
board chair

Banks Peninsula Community
Board members are set to vote in
a new chair.
Reuben Davidson will step
down as the board’s
leader at a meeting on
Monday and a new
chair will be elected.
Davidson will stay
on as a board member
but would resign before
the general election on
October 14 when he
will stand for Labour in
the Christchurch East
electorate.
Davidson said
yesterday he has
still not decided on
a date to resign. His
departure will trigger a byelection.
He has previously said he plans
to resign close to the general
election to minimise the cost to
ratepayers of the by-election.
City council electoral officer Jo
Daly told Bay Harbour News the
Reuben Davidson
by-election to fill the Lyttelton
Subdivision seat would cost about
$35,000.
Davidson said he will continue
to represent the Lyttelton
Subdivision until he resigns.
“I’m still really committed
to serving that
community.”
Community board
member Tyrone Fields
is ineligible for the
chair role because he
is the Banks Peninsula
Ward city councillor.
The new board chair
will be either deputy
chair Nigel Harrison,
board member for the
Akaroa Subdivision,
Cathy Lum-Webb,
member for the
Lyttelton Subdivision, Howard
Needham member for the Mt
Herbert Subdivision, Luana
Swindells also a member for the
Mt Herbert Subdivision, Lyn
Leslie board member for the
Wairewa Subdivision, or Asif
Hussain, board member for the
Akaroa Subdivision.

Clothes drying too close
to a log burner caused a
fire at a Lyttelton house
about 6.30pm on Friday.
The blaze was extinguished by
the owner of the house before
firefighters had arrived. No
one was injured and there was
no structural damage to the
property.
– but they were “not going to
own it” for $150,000.
Another auction date has not
been set, but the owners remain
open to offers.
Mangels said the boatshed
would be a “valuable tack-on”
for a buyer who already has an
existing holiday home on Banks
1200 TREES TO BE
PLANTED AT RESERVE
Steadfast Reserve is set to get
1200 new native trees on Sunday.
About 40 volunteers will help
plant the trees with the Cass
Bay Residents Association.
The reserve on Governors Bay
Rd is one of two sites being
planted by volunteers as part of
a multi-year project which aims
to reduce sediment run-off into
Whakaraupo-Lyttelton Harbour.
The next planting at the reserve
will be on Saturday, July 22,
