Bay Harbour News Wednesday July 5 2023 8 NEWS First tree planting plans released AKAROA Recreation Ground is among the first tranche of tree planting plans released for public feedback as part of the Ōtautahi-Christchurch Urban Forest Plan 2023. The plans cover 14 parks with the aim of growing the city’s tree canopy. “This is the initial first phase of tree planting following the approval of the Urban Forest Plan earlier this month,” said city council head of parks, Andrew Rutledge. “We are keen to progress these 14 plans to make the most of the 2023 planting season, which finishes in September.” The tree species selected for planting will be a mix of 40-60 per cent native, Rutledge said. Along waterways trees will be 100 per cent native. Whether native or deciduous, all species will be selected for the setting and growing conditions. • Plans are open for feedback on the city council’s Have Your Say page until July 17 New pyjamas for kids in need • By Heidi Slade CHOLMONDELEY Children’s Centre has received a donation of more than 200 pairs of brandnew winter pyjamas and multiple pairs of slippers, for a second year in a row. The Governors Bay charity has been operating for 98 years and provides temporary emergency and respite care for children in need. Donated by the Kindness Collective Foundation, the pyjamas and slippers “take a massive Lisa Hurry weight off our overhead costs,” Cholmondeley practice manager Lisa Hurry said. “We are an organisation that’s 80 per cent funded by the community.” Hurry said the donation was part of a Kindness Collective initiative, which runs annually. The collective is a nationwide charity that provides children and their families with the items they need, like pyjamas and slippers. “Every year they have a pyjama drive,” Hurry said. Over the past three years, the collective has distributed more than 25,000 pairs of warm winter pyjamas to children in need. Hurry said a portion of the pyjamas and slippers would stay at Cholmondeley for children when they come for temporary stays. The remainder would go back with children to their families, for them to keep. “When children come and stay with us, we provide everything they need to stay,” Hurry said. “A lot of these children might not have pyjamas.” Hurry said Cholmondeley currently supports about 350 children and their families, and over 30,000 children have come through the centre during its 98 years of operation. “A lot of people have a story or a connection to Cholmondeley,” she said. “And we can’t do it without the community.” The centre thrives off initiatives like its annual Giving Day, when donors match all donations made to the centre. PHOTO: NEWSLINE Domain could get boardwalk, wetland A PROPOSED landscape development plan for the historically significant Takamatua Domain aims to make the area more beautiful and accessible to the public. The domain in Takamatua Bay, north of Akaroa, was used by Māori and early European settlers. In the 1840s, a military blockhouse, designed to be a mini-fortress and place of refuge, was built there by the 2006 found the probable remains of a defensive trench, which surrounded the blockhouse underground at the site. The land is categorised as a public reserve but has never been developed or used as a park and, until recently, was fenced off and used for grazing. Wednesday July 5 2023 Bay Harbour News NEWS 9 Closed: No more camping at Little Akaloa Reserve LITTLE AKALOA Reserve is now closed to campers, due to insufficient facilities and non-compliant discharge water. The decision, made by the Little Akaloa Reserve Committee, came in April after Environment Canterbury issued a non-compliance notice to the city council advising it the discharge of wastewater from the reserve was not up to standard and the reserve did not have sufficient facilities to support campers. Little Akaloa Reserve Committee chair Craig Waghorn said the cost to bring the reserve up to standard was estimated to be between $150,000 and $180,000. “The council would have to upgrade the wastewater system, as well install the infrastructure for hot water, install showers and kitchen and laundry facilities,” Waghorn said. “Considering that there are a number of excellent, fully equipped and compliant campgrounds around Banks Peninsula for campers to enjoy, we ask that people camp elsewhere.” Other campgrounds near Little Akaloa include Okains Bay and Pigeon Bay.
