Summerfield takes new turn

Rangiora rally driver Matt
Summerfield is happy with how
his first full season as asuper
saloon speedway driver panned
out.
‘‘It was meant to be alearning
year but Ihad so much fun.’’
During the season, Matt
competed in 14 race meetings on
five different race tracks in the
South Island, and along the way,
he picked up acouple of podium
finishes and one race win.
He was also awarded the most
improved Driver of the Season
award at Woodford Glen
Speedway.
Matt says he had only one DNF,
which was during his first­ever
drive in the car at Woodford
Glen, since then the car’s gone
great.
‘‘I’m looking forward to
another year campaigning with
the Boulton Racing Team
(BRT).’’
The biggest changes this longtime
national rally competitor
faced adapting to this different
form of motorsport, was driving a

‘‘A rally car is lighter and
handles wonderfully, but asuper
saloon race car is designed from
the ground up to go fast, be big
and strong and the set­up is so
different.
‘‘The motors are huge,
Methanol powered 410ci V8’s
with 700HP compared to my little
1600cc four­cylinder turbo
producing only 300HP.
‘‘People Iknow said it would be
easy to jump in and drive it fast,
but the two types of motorsport
are so far apart, they are night
and day in terms of speed and
handling.’’
He says he was shocked at how
few of his rallying driving skills
could be transferred into
competitive speedway driving.
‘‘In arally car, it’s just you and
your co­driver, working in sync to
get the fastest time on the stage,
you have aplan and you stick to
it.

Matt says Josh Boulton, owner/
head of the BRT based at
Whiterock, approached him
during the 2022 NZ Rally
Championship (NZRC) season.
‘‘He was keen for me to give
super saloons go, and as adeal
for adrive in the NZRC 2023
season had fallen through, I
decided to take up his offer. Josh
and his team were wonderful, I
was very impressed with the
passion and professionalism they
and all the competitors at
speedway bring to motorsport.’’
The Rangiora­based
electrician says he hasn’t left his
rallying roots behind, as he is
slowly preparing aveteran
Subaru for acoming campaign in
the historic rally car
