Enjoying Kaiapoi’sart
By SHELLEY TOPP
An art teacher from Northland has
been on ajourney of discovery since
moving to Kaiapoi in July last year.
Win Stringer moved to Kaiapoi from
Kerikeri to be nearer family in
Christchurch, and says it is the best
move she has ever made.
``I had never been to Kaiapoi
before, even though Iwas raised in
Central Otago and spent 20 years in
Timaru, but everyone is so friendly
here and the town has everything I
need.''
Not long after moving to Kaiapoi,
Win, who studied fine arts at
Canterbury University and has been an
art teacher for 40 years, became a
trustee of the Waimakariri Public Arts
Trust.
The trust was established to promote
art and culture in the Waimakariri
District, encourage public art in new
developments and redevelopments,
raise funds to enable the commission
of art works, educate the public about
art and artists, and support arts
projects and events in the community.
As anew trustee, Win has been
compiling adatabase of existing
outdoor artworks or sculptures in the
Waimakariri district and has been
intrigued by that journey of discovery.
So far she has located 18 sculptures
in Kaiapoi, many of them on the banks
of the Kaiapoi River that winds
through the town.
‘‘Each one has astory to tell and I am
finding that it is agreat introduction to
the town,'' she says.
‘‘It has been fascinating finding out
about the stories behind these
sculptures, the people behind them.’’
Her favourite Kaiapoi outdoor
artwork is the red letterbox sculpture
on Williams Street, which was erected
in 2013 to mark the loss of red zoned
homes in Kaiapoi, Pines Beach and
Kairaki Beach.
It lifted spirits in the town after the
Rubble Rousers' reminder ...
