Amberley Beach bund successful<br />

response to coastalflooding the year<br />
before,and was extended to the full<br />
length of the settlement in 2003.<br />
It required maintenance every few<br />
years,but has beensuccessful at<br />
preventing coastalinundation and<br />
reducingerosion.<br />
Mr Dobbie saidanew bundwas now<br />
required,asthe existing one wastoo close<br />
to thesea, and it wouldneed to be<br />
relocatableasthe sealevel rose.<br />
‘‘Thenew bundisabit of agame<br />
changerbecauseitcan be rolledback and<br />
it can go deeper into the sand.’’<br />
He said the‘‘triggers’’werebased on<br />
thepossiblehazards.<br />

beingunable to obtain insurance,the cost<br />
of renourishing the bund, theimpact of<br />
floodevents andsignificant capital works<br />
beingrequired.<br />

ZealandFederationofWomen’s<br />
Institutes’ 102nd annualmeeting.<br />
Fourmembers fromthree<strong>North</strong><br />
<strong>Canterbury</strong> branches, Kainga, Rangiora<br />
and SeftonKowai, all receivedtrophies<br />
for their achievements.<br />

Hopkinson, of Belfast,president of the<br />
Kainga WI,who received aGoldHonours<br />
Award.<br />

veryhumbling to receive the award.<br />

Themembership increase was<br />
achieved at the SeftonKowaiWIbranch<br />
andits president,Denise Lochhead was<br />
presentedwiththe SawerTrophy in<br />
recognition of the membershipgain.<br />
Denisesaid theincrease in<br />
membership wasareflection of Sefton's<br />
‘‘strong,tightknit community’’where<br />
people supported each other.<br />
However, thebranchalsohad members<br />
fromfurther afield including<br />
Christchurch and Rotherham. There is a<br />
widerangeofages —the youngestinher<br />
early 60’sand the oldest, aformer teacher<br />
at Sefton School, now 93. Raylene Page, a<br />
memberfromRangiora,was awarded the<br />
Lones Trophy for her handmade covered<br />
tissuebox.<br />
