Ashleydidn’t help Hurunui’s 25th birthday celebrations, beatingit3110, while Kaiapoi had to work hard before triumphing 2112 over Ohoka. Oxford went to Woodend expecting atight and even battle, but it was anything but, scoring eight tries in a 5010 win. Points after 5rounds: Glenmark Cheviot25, Ashley19, Kaiapoi 17, Saracens 16, Hurunui 15, Ohoka 7, Oxford 5, Woodend 0. GlenmarkCheviot v Saracens The game was extraspecial for GlenmarkCheviot, as it was for Cogs Harnett,who was playing his 100thgame for the club. It also gave the combined side achancetodefend the Deans Shield for the first time in over two years. The sun came out, but too late to dry out awet field, so it was to be amuddy game where ball handling was achallenge. It started with afizz with GlenmarkCheviot crossing in the third minute with atry to Hayden O'Donnell. Atry in the corner to Seijun Kawasaki after asustained period of forwards pressure was next, while the remaining points for the first half were from No 8 AndrewHull and Lock Tom Blyth. The second half startedwell with Nick Hyde changing his try scoring methods,this time at the end of aslick backline counter attack, and scooting40m down the side line to score in the corner. The rest of the second half was aseesawing affair. The slippery ball was achallenge, with neither team managing to challenge the line, untillate in the half when Kawasaki again made abreak down the side, with the ever presentMax Murray collecting the spoils. Kyohei Yamasawa had agreat game with the boot, landing all six conversions,insome challenging footing. The whole GlenmarkCheviot pack workedwell as aunit, with Nick Hyde having avery strong game, while in the back all the focus was always goingtobein and around the centurion Harnett. GlenmarkCheviot 25(H O'Donnell, Seijun Kawasaki, Andrew Hull, Tom Blyth, Nick Hyde, Max Murray tries; Kyohei Yamasawa six conversions) beat Saracens0. Oxford vWoodend Oxford travelled to Woodend expecting aclose encounter. But it was not to be, due to a supremefirst half performance by Oxford's loose forward trio of Jesse Houston,George Prain and Jack Classen. They dominated at the break down, which set the team up for four triesinthe spell. In the first half, Ashley Classen scored Oxford’s first try after six minutes, and four minuteslater Inasi Ketewai dotted down. With overwhelming numbers, Classen was on hand to scorethe third try and five minutes later it was Houston who was on hand as last receiver to score. Woodenddid snatch atry on the half time whistle,when it attacked in earnest,and was rewarded when lock Thomas Stopforth charged his way over to score. But the game was effectively out of reach with the scoreline at 265. It was asimilarpattern in the second half. Oxford's half back, Matt Roberts,asthird receiver found his way to the line. At the 20minutemark goal kicker Kyle Newman scored, and from the kick off Harry Muir scored to extendthe margin to 435. After asolid build up, and effective ball retention from Woodend, it was rewarded with a well earnedtry to BarryBurton. With full time looming Prain finished Oxford's try scoring feast. Whilethe Oxford loose forwardswere the stars,Matt Robertsathalfback was again to the fore. One of the hardest workers in the Woodendline up was lock ThomasStopforth whose try was well deserved. Huge milestone .. Cogs Harnett who celebrated his 100th match for his club in CheviotGlenmark’s match against Saracens with the Deans Shield his team retained. The visitorsdidn't muck around, scoringtwo early tries through mid fielders Corbin Mechenand Matt Couch, off the back of some brilliant attackfrom fullback Anthony Tavendale. Hurunuiregathered and started to find its rhythm, scoringthe next two tries. Ashleystruck back through winger Korbyn Gray soon after the break, when slick hands through the backline sent the winger across in the left corner. Another late try to the visitors sealed it at 3113, their ruthless counter attack and quick ruck ball provingthe key differences. As you would expect, Hurunui's BrianAnderson toiled all day. He was brutal in the collision zone and their leading ball carrier. Tirelessyoung lock, Issac Francis was involved everywhere, and Matt Hickey also had astrong game. Anthony Tavendale was undoubtedly Ashley’s best player. Firstfive Nathan Emery kicked five from five. Hurunui 13 (Isaac Francis, Regan Holden tries; Kyle Mckenzie apenalty) lost to Ashley 31 (Corbin Mechen, Matt Couch, KorbynGray tries; Nathan Emery four conversions, one penalty). Ohoka vKaiapoi In what has become aconsistent theme of the season for Ohoka, it competed strongly as ateam against amore highlyranked opponent, but in the end just made too many errorstobeable to pull off the upset win it covets. Kaiapoi made the most of the running in the first half. The tone was set when Dante Loveplaced adeft kick behind the Ohoka backsfor fullback Lance Taylor to gather expertly, and dive over wide out. Taine JacobsLawson added the extraswith avery good conversion. Ten minutes later Jacobs Lawson was in the action again as Kaiapoistormedontoattack, and recycled the ball expertly through threeorfour phases before he crashedover under the postsmaking the conversion a formality. But it was not all one way traffic, and Ohoka halved the deficit with agood try that was finished off by Ben Gold after a strongmid field burst. Kaiapoireestablishedits 14 pointmargincourtesy of its powerful scrummaging which saw captain JacobHurringdot downfor apushover try. Again Ohoka bounced back, and felt somewhataggrieved whencentre Scott Allin barged over the line engulfed bya blanket of yellow jerseys. Withoutthe advantage of numerousmultiangle replays that his colleagues in firstclass rugbywould enjoy,referee Jared Le Gros couldscarcely be blamed for not being able to award atry, so Kaiapoi took a14point lead into halftime. It wasagreat credit to Ohoka’s tenacious defence, Kaiapoiwas held scoreless for all the second half. Scott Allinatcentre marshalledthe Ohokabackline defence effectively, whileTom Wedlake also stood out for his tenacious defence. Kaiapoi’s defence was also solid,but Ohokadid manage to put some morepoints on the boardwhen replacement David Pollard finished off agood team try. Despite being unable to score abonus pointtry, Kaiapoi managed to hold on comfortably enough. Lock HarrisonLewis responded well to the opportunity he got with his first runon startfor the season,while in the Kaiapoi pack Bailey Counihan turned in a wholehearted effort.
