SURVEY continued from page 29 “I think this survey is more important than anything we’ve done in a long time,” said Michael George, chairman of the Chaldean Federation of America. “We’ve always guesstimated but no one had done the scientific research. We can make those statements with integrity now.” George, the community’s unofficial patriarch, added, “I invited myself onto the committee because I was so concerned with making sure it was legitimate.” The survey is particularly important, he said, because Chaldeans are chronically undercounted by the U.S. Census Bureau. The 2000 Census showed 32,398 Chaldeans and the 2006 American Community Survey – an ongoing statistical study that replaces the long form — totaled just 27,066. The study was led by Kurt Metzger, director of research and community investment & partnerships for the United Way of Southeastern Michigan. The biggest challenge, he said, was coming up with mailing lists of community members. Citing privacy concerns, some Chaldean churches would not share their lists, though Fr. Manual Boji of Mother of God did write a cover letter assuring participants that their answers would be kept strictly confidential. The first mailing in April 2007 took longer than expected and by the time many households received it, the deadline to reply was already near or passed. That necessitated a second mailing in August. In total, about 8,739 surveys were mailed out and 1,498 returned – a response rate of just over 17 percent. That’s a few points over the typical response rate, so researchers said they felt confident of an adequate sample. “I would have liked to do a telephone survey too, but for the first try I think we did pretty good,” said Metzger. The results held no giant surprises, Metzger said. “I guess the high degree of business ownership reported was probably the most startling,” he said. “Not that we didn’t realize Chaldeans’ high rate of entrepreneurship and business ownership, but 61 percent is extremely high.” Also noteworthy was the trend toward higher education. “The education of the younger population is a very important component within the community,” Metzger said. “In Southeast Michigan we keep talking about the importance and culture of education, and the Chaldean community really does reflect that.” 30 CHALDEAN NEWS JUNE 2008
