THE ABCs of SEO
Potential customers are taking physical action in real time to
search Google for pressure washer [your city] or other pressure
washing services that you provide; if your website is not listed
on the first page of the search results (as a result of some
simple search engine optimization techniques that you can
learn and employ), you are basically handing customers to your
competitors every single day. In this ultimate guide to SEO for
Growing the Game
A video game about pressure washing grew to an amazing
7 million fans in less than a year. Yes, people do find your job
satisfying and desirable (even though – ironically – it’s hard to
find good labor ready to work.) Now the popular game is going
to an even greater platform – Sponge Bob’s Bikini Bottom.
EDITOR’S
NOTE
The Heart
of an Industry
Our cover story this month provides
a look at the 10 biggest changes in the
pressure wash industry over the past
quarter century, as selected by the
most veteran journalist in the field.
One thing I’ve found in my own
years of covering the pressure wash
industry is that the pressure washing
world is full of good people who are
generous with their talents and have a
heart for their communities.
Bill Hutson and his wife Pam of H&H
Softwash in Franklin, North Carolina are
my case in point. Here’s why.
Fields of the Wood is a Christian
religious park of more than 200 acres
in Cherokee County, NC, owned by
the Church of God of Prophecy—a
Holiness Pentecostal denomination.
It is best known for its 300-footwide,
mountainside representation of
the Ten Commandments, with letters
five feet high and four feet wide. The
park includes numerous other markers
and monuments, including representations
of the three crosses on Golgotha.
The roadside attraction is named
after a reference in the King James
Version of Psalms 132: 6: "We found it
in the fields of the wood."
The Hutsons relocated to Macon
County, NC for retirement a few
years back. But a businessman at
heart, Bill Hutson “saw a need in the
community and couldn’t resist filling
that gap.” He did so by founding H&H
Softwash in 2021.
The Hutsons had long ago started
a nonprofit, Table Talk Foundation
for Better Living, which provided
free home repairs for the elderly
and disabled. Once, while cleaning a
90-year-old woman’s algae-covered
sidewalk, Hutson researched how to
clean it, discovered soft washing, and
began offering softwash as another
free service.
Hutson retired from Table Talk
Foundation after it had grown to
operate two offices in two states, with
clients in 12 states.
Since its founding, H&H Softwash
has commonly offered lucky community
members in Macon County the
chance to win a free exterior wash. In
one contest, area churches were able
to upload photos to H&H Softwash on
Facebook and the photo with the most
likes received a free roof and exterior
wash for their church.
So it was that the Hutsons happened
to visit Fields of the Wood in recent
months and were moved to a singular
conclusion: they had to clean the park.
Hutson spent three weeks on the
job, estimating at least $10,000 in
donated services. He was very careful
with the structures given their age.
Following his work, the park is by no
means spotless; but importantly, the
algae growth has at long last been put
in check.
Hutson, who plans to retire from
pressure washing for good in the near
future, said cleaning the theme park
made him feel like he “ended with a
purpose.”
Regardless of your religious faith,
it’s a feel good story that speaks to the
heart of people in our industry.
Well done, Mr. and Mrs. Hutson.
BY CHUCK VIOLAND
Anybody who’s owned a business
for any length of time has experienced
periods when their job as CEO felt
more like a parent driving a car with
unruly kids in the backseat than it did
the enlightened leader of a growing
business.
And, although the wisdom
contained in the parenting phrases we
heard as kids in the back seat―or have
found ourselves repeating to our own
kids from the front seat―can be sound
advice at times, does it also apply to
business?
When you’re a parent, the kids
can’t get out of the moving car and
find another family to join. Employees
can, and it’s usually pretty costly when
they do, so we need to be sure our
wisdom is sound.
Let’s look at a few phrases.
DO I NEED TO PULL
THIS CAR OVER?
You knew things were serious when
it wasn’t just any car they were going
to pull over. It was THIS car. While my
own parents never used this particular
expression, I’m sure there were times
when they thought about it.
In business, there is no “pulling this
car over” to have that big Texas talkin’
to with an unruly employee. Things
keep right on moving while you
employ radical candor to remind them
of your expectations. But I would
recommend closing your door first.
DON’T MAKE ME
COME BACK THERE!
Even as a kid, you knew your
parents couldn’t “come back there”
while they were driving the car, so this
threat was an empty one unless they
chose to abandon forward momentum
and stop the car to climb over the seat.
This is the equivalent of stepping
down from your role as CEO to get
involved at a level of your organization
that you’re already paying someone
6 | PRESSURE WASH NEWS | VOL. 5, NO. 1 | SUMMER 2023

else to handle. While on rare occasions
this might be necessary, it’s also a
slippery slope. Not only are you not
doing the things you’re supposed to
be doing to keep the business moving
forward, but it causes people in your
organization to stop doing the things
they’re being paid to do.
HOW MANY TIMES DO I
HAVE TO TELL YOU…?
complaining out loud, verbal warning,
written warning, time off without pay,
shunning, and, finally, termination—
occasionally with the option to return
at some later date.
DON’T MAKE ME
REACH AROUND AND
SMACK SOMEONE.
In today’s gentrified parenting
climate, it’s frowned upon to smack
your kid. But, let’s face it, any kid with
a parent whose arm is long enough to
actually reach the back seat and connect
with their kid’s bobbing and weaving
head is worth being listened to.
The last time I checked, using
physical force on a wayward employee
not only alarms the other employees,
but it’s illegal. I recommend against it.
While the sage wisdom of automotive
discipline practiced by our parents
makes for great stories to tell our kids,
I would recommend you stick with
healthier, more effective approaches
to employee engagement.
This phrase served as an early warning
system for my siblings and me. We knew
the first time our parents said this we
were safe. It was when it was repeated in
progressively higher pitched voices that
we knew their fuse was getting shorter
… and so were our leashes.
Many businesses use a progressive
discipline approach: verbal warning,
written warning, termination. But for
most small business owners this is
easier in theory than it is in practice.
As a result, we end up with the five- or
six-step progressive discipline policy:
A look around the cleaning equipment
world for news and notes of interest
Silver-Lined Success
Schieffer Co. International, a
manufacturer of high-pressure hoses
for large original equipment manufacturers
and distributors, recently celebrated
its 25th anniversary in business.
Schieffer opened in Peosta, Iowa
in 1998 with just six employees in a
12,000-square-foot facility. In the two
and a half decades since, the company
has changed its name and expanded
exponentially. Now known as ProPulse,
a Schieffer Company, it employs 130
and utilizes 130,000 square feet of
space. It officially celebrated its silver
anniversary in March 2023.
“25 years is a long time,” said Jeff
Theis, President and CEO of ProPulse,
“but I believe ‘blink of an eye’ is appropriate
when describing our journey.”
During this ‘blink of an eye,’
ProPulse built expansions, acquired
land, and invested into new manufacturing
automation opportunities.
Over the last 25 years, the hose
manufacturer transitioned from a
small hose distributor to a mid-sized
hose manufacturer who supplies
major original equipment manufacturers
across the country.
In 2021, ProPulse added 20,000
square feet of manufacturing space to
the production facility, allowing it to
invest in industry leading hose manufacturing
technology. The two-year
expansion on production facilities
resulted in what company officials
call the most modern and advanced
thermoplastic hose extrusion process
in the United States.
Much of ProPulse’s success stems
from their ability to uphold customer
satisfaction, which in turn allows
them to consecutively increase sales
year over year.
“We say what we are going to do, and
we do it on-time, every time,” said Theis.
That customer-focused mindset
isn’t going away anytime soon,
according to Theis.
“ProPulse will always be known
as a company that keeps its commitments
to our customers,” said Theis.
Customer satisfaction isn’t the only
legacy ProPulse plans to uphold. Backed
by German manufacturing from their
partners at Schieffer International
Group, ProPulse is carrying on generations
of manufacturing excellence.
New automation will allow the
Iowa manufacturer to dive into new
product markets and build upon their
current products.
“We will continue to fill out our
line of thermoplastic hoses and challenge
new markets,” said Theis.
ProPulse’s focus on customer-communication,
innovation, delivery, and
quality has allowed them to expand at
a rapid rate for consecutive years. The
hose manufacturer plans to continue
its legacy of growth into the next 25
years of business and beyond.
Kleaning Up
Last summer, Krystal Klean, a
building care company, announced it
had finalized its acquisition of Under
Pressure Washing, a Bradenton,
Florida -based commercial pressure
washing company that serves the
Sarasota area.
It was the 108th acquisition for
Krystal Klean, which is part of the
U.S. organization FleetWash. Terms
weren’t disclosed.
The Jacksonville-based company
was founded in 1996 by Brian and
Leatt Lipker. Now, with more than
135 employees that serve more than
10,000 clients, Krystal Klean is looking
to continue expanding through more
acquisitions.
"If you have a cleaning or coating
business with annual revenues
between $200,000 and $200 million,”
Jeremy Morgan of Krystal Klean says,
“we'd like to talk."
Klangphonics, a German
techno music trio, recently used a
power washer as an active instrument
for their aptly-named 2023
The band commonly produces
techno music not with computers
Other recent musical efforts
by the band included one song
using a vacuum cleaner, plastic
another used a rubber duck and
Made in America
Disney Parks are renowned for
their spotlessness. Insiders know
that overnight cleaning crews –
including an army of pressure
washers – tackle the park each
night in an effort to present that
signature spotless feel for visitors
each morning.
In January, 2023, Walt Disney
World News Today reported on
“several instances of public backlash
in the past month regarding
cleanliness issues around the parks,”
and published photographs of
pressure washing crews cleaning
up Space Mountain at the Magic
Kingdom “to get all that dirt and
grime off the iconic structure’s
exterior.”
In March, 2023, Pleasant Prairie,
Wisconsin-based FNA Group
announced it would move the
manufacture of critical components
including internal combustion engines
to North America.
The decision allows FNA to
strengthen its supply chain and better
control costs, the company stated in a
press release.
The move also allows FNA Group
to field a more robust Research and
Development team close to its manufacturing
facilities to innovate new
and more efficient products including
internal combustion engines, the
company said.
“The COVID pandemic
hammered home the challenges
of offshore product development
and manufacturing,” said William
Alexander, executive vice president,
sales and marketing. “We think the
environment is right to move our
manufacturing closer to home so we
can continue to design, engineer and
sell the best products imaginable.”
While competitors have stalled
manufacturing capacity and product
development, especially for internal
combustion engines, FNA Group is
convinced they are better able to serve
their customers and markets by ramping
up nearshore manufacturing plants.
The decision will solidify supply
chain, shorten lead times, enhance
quality control, and contain cost on
finished goods for their customers.
The move also makes it easier to
develop projects with partners and
fine-tune processes.
“We are proud of this opportunity
to grow our manufacturing footprint
FNA Group also recently filed critical
circumstances allegations against
Chinese and Vietnamese producers
of gas-powered pressure washers.
Because of a surge of imports,
FNA Group has requested that the
U.S. Department of Commerce
impose early antidumping and countervailing
duties against imports from
these two countries, as part of its
trade case filed at the end of 2022.
Shipment data reveals that
Chinese and Vietnamese producers,
along with their U.S. importers and
customers, are trying to evade the
proposed additional import duties
by stockpiling their products in the
United States before a decision by
Commerce.
FNA Group, determined to put
an end to these unfair practices,
believes that the U.S. Department
of Commerce will substantiate FNA
Group allegations of a surge, and
backdate the additional duties to
dates as early as March 2023.
FNA Group's CEO, Gus
Alexander, stated, "Such practices
fundamentally contradict the
purpose of the duties and will not be
tolerated by the U.S. authorities. We
fully expect that the allegation will
succeed, and the retroactive duties
will apply. It is our hope that the
Department of Commerce and the
International Trade Commission will
make a rightful determination based
on the evidence available."
The case numbers of the investigations
are A-570-148, A-552-008,
and C-570-149. FNA Group is represented
by Matthew J. McConkey of
Mayer Brown LLP.
Data from the US International
Trade Commission (USITC) shows
that in 2021, Vietnam exported
about $430 million worth of the
investigated products to the U.S.,
accounting for about 44% of the
total export value from all countries
to the U.S. and increasing more than
1.5 times compared to 2020 and
25 times to 2019. The estimated
dumping margin for Vietnam is
110.23 - 225.65%.
At press time, the U.S. Department
of Commerce was still investigating
whether the named subject imports
are being sold to the United States
at less than fair value (“dumping”)
or benefit from unfair government
subsidies. ITC was also investigating
whether the subject imports are
causing “material injury” or “threat
of material injury” to the domestic
industry.
According to Adams Lee, attorney
with Harris Bricken, and author
of China Law Blog, these pressure
washers are just the latest gas powered
equipment to be targeted for AD
and CVD duties. In 2020, Briggs &
Stratton filed AD/CVD cases on large
and small gas vertical shaft engines.
Soon thereafter, U.S. producers could
no longer afford to import Chinese
engines or get enough engines from
Briggs & Stratton. Facing their own
import competition, they then filed
their own AD/CVD against imports
of lawn mowers and snow blowers
primarily from China. After very
high AD/CVD duties were imposed
in these cases, the volume of imports
from China dropped significantly.
“It is not surprising to see domestic
producers in other gas powered products
wanting to try to get similar AD/
CVD duties to protect themselves
from their own Chinese import
competition,” Lee wrote.
Jet Setters
The Water Jetting Association, a
trade association representing organizations
that have a professional and
commercial interest in all aspects of
high-pressure water jetting in the United
Kingdom, recently launched a new
code of practice for pressure washing.
“Pressure washing has become so
commonplace that many businesses
are not taking nearly enough precautions
to protect their operatives or
colleagues in the work area,” stated
WJA president John Jones at the
time of the announcement. “The need
is urgent. Many operatives do not
receive structured training, do not use
the right PPE, and are unaware of the
hazards they face.”
Jones argued that easy access to
pressure washing equipment has lulled
people into a false sense of security.
“Those who operate home pressure
washers in shorts and flip-flops are
likely to take that mindset into the
workplace,” he said.
The new code also includes new
water jetting medical guidelines
created following research into water
jetting injuries commissioned by the
WJA and carried out by a team of
leading NHS trauma doctors. Their
study, published in European Journal
of Trauma and Emergency Medicine,
confirmed the likelihood that many
high-risk fluid injection injuries are
not being properly diagnosed by GPs
and emergency doctors.
“Every person, from the first
responder, to the paramedic, the emergency
doctor,
GP and
therapist,
has a part to
play in minimizing
long-term
effects,” Jones stated.
“With this in mind, all
WJA-qualified water jetting operatives
carry a medical card alerting
emergency medics to consider fluid
injection injuries.”
Don’t Fear the Reaper
Savage, MN-based Hydra-Flex,
Inc. aims to once again “revolutionize”
the sewer jetting industry with the
launch of its newest innovation –
the Revolution by Reaper sewer
jetting nozzle.
According to the company, the
Revolution combines unparalleled
new cleaning power with everything
customers already love about Hydra-
Flex’s Reaper nozzles.
Like the Reaper, the Revolution
features a forceful front rotating stream
and powerful back jets to cut and clear
the toughest blockages, but it goes a
step further with a new 360° rotating
sub-head with dual jets that completely
clean and de-scale the pipe.
This all-in-one tool simultaneously
cuts, clears, and cleans to help operators
work faster, save water, and save money.
The Revolution is built for
6” to 36” sewer pipes and can
take on even the biggest jetting
challenges.
“We’re thrilled to introduce
the Revolution and its
unmatched cleaning power to
the sewer jetting industry,” said
Ryan Lindaman, Hydra-Flex
industrial sales manager. “The
results from our field trials around the
country have exceeded our very high
expectations, and we can’t wait to get
this nozzle into our customer’s hands
so they can work more efficiently.”
Hydra-Flex tested its new nozzle
against leading competitors and
found the Revolution removes nearly
three times more debris on the first
pass and uses at least 25% less water.
Rather than using one nozzle to
clear blockages and another to clean
the pipe, the Revolution does it all to
improve efficiency and help improve
the bottom line.
“Our operators were impressed by
the nozzle’s performance,” said Andy
Keller, Sewer Department foreman
for Big Bear City, California. “It is
excellent at cleaning the pipe walls.
This nozzle is now our first choice for
pre-jetting for CCTV inspections.”
The Revolution is ready
to take on countless tasks,
including municipal sewer
cleaning and removal of roots,
fats, oil, grease, and more.
The nozzle operates between
1,000 and 2,500 PSI with a
flow range of 40-80 GPM.
The new rotating sub-head is
designed to maintain consistent
speed throughout the nozzle’s life.
A stainless-steel centralizer is included
to ensure the nozzle stays centered
within the pipe.
Speaking of life, the Revolution is
proven to outlive the competition. It’s
made from premium materials – stainless
steel housing and tungsten carbide
wear surfaces – and is both field and
shop repairable to extend its life.
Human Error
Vistara, India’s leading full-service
carrier and a joint venture of Tata Sons and
Singapore Airlines, announced in June 2023
the implementation of Aerowash, an automated
aircraft exterior washing and cleaning
solution introduced by AeroTech Support
Services Pvt. Ltd.
Operated by a user friendly and wireless
remote control, Aerowash is equipped with
several safety features and alarm indicators.
Traditional aircraft washing is considered
difficult, time-consuming, risky to workers,
and most importantly, fraught with potential
errors that a robot is less likely to make.
According to a study by The International
Shooting from the Tip
Southeast Softwash LLC, a
company based in Roanoke, AL,
announced in late 2022 the release of
the company’s new titanium shooter
tip for downstreaming and a soap tip
for softwashing.
The Titanium Tall Reach Tip
(Shooter Tip) For 8-10 Gpm Anodized
Blue / Purple Finish is to be used on
on 8gpm-10gpm pressure washers or
10gpm softwash pumps. It is made
from titanium, which means its weight
is approximately 50 percent that of a
stainless steel shooter tip.
Also available is the Titanium Tall
Reach Tip (Shooter Tip) For 4-7 Gpm
Anodized Blue / Purple Finish, which is
used as a soap tip for pressure washing.
It is to be used for on 4gpm-5.5gpm
pressure washers or 5-7gpm softwash
pumps. It also makes use of titanium as
material, which means that compared
to steel, it is lightweight, strong, and
corrosion resistant.
Southeast Softwash LLC introduced
their equipment manufacturing
Air Transport Association (IATA), 26% of
airplane accidents were started off by human
error in maintenance-related overlooks.
Automatizing processes like aircraft exterior
cleaning, an important part of maintenance,
repair, and overhaul (MRO) services,
could aid in cutting down the number.
IATA showed that in 1903, in the early
days of aviation, around 80% of accidents
related to maintenance were caused by
machines. Today, however, the number has
flipped, representing the rate of human errors
instead.
Aircraft washing is done to save fuel and
ensure safety.
division in 2018 and since then, they
have evolved into the biggest turn-key
equipment provider for softwashing
in the world. The company offers
softwashing components and supplies,
including chemicals, wands/manifolds,
pumps, hoses/hose reels, tips/nozzle
holders, surface cleaners, and more.
Coty Yarbrough, Southeast
Softwash’s CEO, stated, “Our story
begins in 1987 with my dad Lane
Yarbrough. Dad began studying on
why the asphalt shingles they built
in the factory would start showing
the ugly black streaks after a few
years. Dad began experimenting with
how to clean the roofs and the first
successful roof cleaning was our own
house in 1988. Fortunately for Dad,
the factory had an on-site chemist
who was also working on this problem
and gave Dad a few suggestions on the
proper chemicals to start trying. Since
that day, we’ve completed thousands
of wash jobs and refined our processes
to perfection.”
Rollin’, Rollin’,
Rollin’…
Philadelphia-based pressure
washer Rolling Suds
announced the introduction
of franchise opportunities in
markets around the country.
Rolling Suds was founded in 1990 by Brian
Wendling Sr. and eventually became a father-duo
business with the addition of Brian Wendling Jr. as
co-owner.
Spearheading the franchising growth strategy is
Rolling Suds CEO Aaron Harper, who is also the
CEO and Founder of Franchise Overdrive.
"Currently, the power washing industry is fragmented
with companies that lack the necessary
experience to do the job right,” said Harper. “With
more than 30 years under their belt, the Wendling's
have dialed in systems and processes that allow
them to provide services better than anyone else."
The launch of the Rolling Suds franchise comes
at an opportune time, as the global home services
industry is projected to reach $1.8 billion by 2030,
a 21+% increase from 2022.
Growing the Game
A video game about pressure washing structures
grew to 7 million fans. Now it’s going to Bikini Bottom.
BY DREW RUBLE
Vast sections of the internet are
dedicated to videos of things being
power washed because a broad swath
of the general public finds the process
of transforming grime-covered surfaces
to clean and bright spaces to be utterly
mesmerizing.
Millions of people have watched
clips from YouTube channels like
Power Washing World, where outdoor
furniture, trucks, patios -- even vegetables—are
pressure washed.
What’s the attraction?
Autonomous Sensory Meridian
Response (ASMR), which, defined
in medical terms, describes the experience
of tingling sensations in the
crown of the head, in response to a
range of audio-visual triggers.
You may think what you do for a
living is boring. But in the eyes of the
general public, its dreamy.
This human obsession with pressure
washing entered the multi-billion-dollar
video gaming realm in 2021
when a small, UK-based game developer
– FuturLab – created PowerWash
Simulator.
The game lets interested gamers
blast dirt into oblivion right from their
desktop.
How successful has it been?
FuturLab announced in May 2023 that
since its creation, 7 million players have
joined in on the power washing game.
It’s an amazing achievement for a
small studio like FuturLab.
Kirsty Ridgen, the Co-CEO of
FuturLab said of the milestone, “With
over 7 million players, we are honoured
that so many people have found their
zen with PowerWash Simulator. The
strength in our community is palpable.
Since we launched into Early Access,
the support for our soothing sim has
been immense, and we are extremely
grateful that this has continued to
strengthen past release.”
The game first launched in May of
2021 and fully released the following
year in July 2022. By September
2022, FuturLabs announced 3 million
players had joined in on the scrubbing
fun. Now that number has more than
doubled.
Up until recently, PowerWash
Simulator simply had players power
washing cars, houses, trains, literally
everything dirty requires players
to clean. Its monotonous, precision
gameplay became a relaxing form of
escapism, with every cleaned environment
another achievement. Players
could go through a career mode and
build their power washing business,
starting with simple tasks and working
up to more demanding jobs. There’s
also a challenge mode which tests
players speed to clean under a time
limit. Moreover, others can join in on
the fun and make cleaning go quicker.
Since then, however, due to its
incredible success and popularity,
PowerWash Simulator has “crossedover”
in to new, more celebrated
realms of the video gaming world.
Over the past few months, Power
Wash Simulator has received free
updates, two from Square Enix, letting
players clean the iconic Croft Mansion
from Tomb Raider, and a Midgar
Special Pack, featuring Hardy Daytona,
Scorpion Sentinel, Seventh Heaven
and more for cleaning, from Final
Fantasy 7 Remake.
The game, which was initially
only available on Microsoft Windows,
Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S., has
also crossed some incredible access
thresholds in recent months and is
now available on the following additional
platforms: Nintendo Switch,
PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4.
But perhaps its greatest achievement
to date was announced in May
2023 when PowerWash Simulator
expanded to…wait for it…Bikini
Bottom. As in the home of cartoon
icon SpongeBob.
Unlike past themed expansions,
the SpongeBob SquarePants
PowerWash Simulator Special
Pack will be a paid release, meaning
interested gamers will have to cough
up $8 to play.
It’s considered a small price to pay
for gamers to gain the chance to pressure
wash Conch Street, The Bikini
Bottom Bus, The Krusty Krab, The
Patty Wagon, The Invisible Boatmobile,
and The Mermalair. The game is to be
released sometime this summer.
For the first time ever, FuturLab
even redesigned the PowerWash
character model exclusively for this
Special Pack.
“Well, you couldn’t go wandering
about under the sea looking like that,
you’d give yourself away as a landlubber.
Now, you’ll fit right in with
the crowd as a true Bottomite, with a
custom-designed gear that could rival
even Sandy Cheeks’ best inventions.
We’ve been ashore-d that your power
washer will work just fine underwater,
powered by advanced technology
from the SpongeBob SquarePants
universe: imagination,” the company
stated in a release.
It all begs two significant questions:
First, how exactly do you pressure
wash underwater? And second, in a
day and time when most pressure
wash operators are struggling to find
the labor force they need to run their
businesses, how is it possible that so
many people out there are fascinated
with the art of pressure washing?
Perhaps in your next job advertisement,
you could begin by stating
“Are you a fan of the video game
PowerWash Simulator…???”
top spots when potential customers
search for those pressure washing
keywords, you are primed to dominate
your market.
In this guide to SEO for pressure
washers, we’re going to get you
pointed in the right direction, so your
customers start to find your pressure
washing services (instead of your
competitors’ services).
We’ll go over key strategies you
can implement right away to get
your pressure washing website moving
in the right direction.
THE BASICS
SEO is a marketing strategy to
improve your pressure washing business’s
visibility on search engines and
help you get found online.
Appearing at the top of online
search results pages helps to generate
free traffic to your website and allows
you to connect with customers actively
looking for your services.
Why is SEO so effective? Because
customers are looking for pressure
washing services in real time. It’s
similar to customers walking in to your
office at the exact time they need your
services. Priceless!
There are four types of SEO for
pressure washing companies.
Local SEO: This is the practice of
optimizing your online presence to
rank higher in local search results. This
is especially important for pressure
washing contractors because most of
their customers are likely to be located
in close proximity.
Technical SEO: This focuses on
methods of optimizing the technical
aspects of your website to improve its
visibility in search engine results. This
can include things like optimizing your
website’s code, improving the loading
speed of your website, and ensuring
that your website is mobile-friendly.
On-Page SEO: This targets individual
web pages within your website and
refers to the process of optimizing
each one to rank higher and earn more
relevant traffic. This entails the use of
relevant and high-quality content, the
inclusion of keywords in headings and
page titles, and the use of alt-text to
describe images.
Off-Page SEO: This refers to the
practice of building authority and
backlinks to your website in order to
improve its visibility in search engine
results. Building high-quality inbound
links grows your site’s authority, which
is what Google analyzes when determining
where pressure washing sites
should rank in their search engine.
OPTIMIZE YOUR
PRESSURE
WASHING WEBSITE
It starts with optimizing for user
experience (UX) because it’s vitally
important that your website is
providing a good user experience to
your pressure washing customers.
The mantra is “Happy Google,
Happy Rankings!”
If your website is not providing a
good user experience, all the best pressure
washer SEO in the world isn’t
going to make a difference.
It’s like having heavy weights
placed on your website as you try to
move it up search engine rankings.
Why? When it comes to SEO, UX
is one direct measure that Google has
clear insight into. Google starts tracking
the UX of a user from the moment
they first appear on its search engine.
For instance, imagine a user
starts on Google’s servers to type in
a search term like “pressure washer
maintenance” or some other pressure
washing service that you provide.
Next, the user clicks on a search result
to visit the listed pressure washing
company that was on the first page.
Now comes to crucial step: this is
where Google sits and waits to see
what this user does next. The dreaded
‘back button’ is at play here!
The following are the measurements
Google can then take away from
the user experience on your website.
Great user experience: Google user
searches for “pressure washer [your
city],” finds your company, clicks to
visit your website, and then never
returns to Google’s servers. Yay! They
found what they were looking for,
liked it a lot, and Google is happy! This
is great pressure washer SEO and your
website stays where it is on Google
rankings or travels up the charts.
Good user experience: Google user
searches, finds your site, clicks to visit,
and then returns to Google’s servers
after a couple minutes or more. Ok,
that’s good. They obviously liked your
site but still might need to look more.
Google is still happy. Good SEO for
your pressure washing services and
your site stays where it is or moves up
the rankings.
‘OK’ user experience: Google user
searches, finds your site, clicks to visit
your website, and then returns to
Google’s servers in around 30 seconds
a minute. Eh, ok. They stuck around
for a little bit but not a definitive signal.
Most likely your ranking stays the
same or moves down/up compared to
other sites UX signals to Google.
Bad user experience: Google user
searches, finds your pressure washing
company, clicks to visit your website,
and then quickly returns to Google’s
servers. Almost 100% they didn’t
like what they found and are looking
immediately for another search result.
Not good and this site will most likely
move down the rankings -- and that
will be the case no matter how good
the pressure washers’ SEO is.
TAKING ACTION
Google has been using UX signals
more and more to determine which
pressure washing company is deserving
of top spots. It’s the path to the first
search page.
Here are several strategies to equip
you with the correct UX optimization:
Keyword Research for Laser
Focused Relevancy: Successful SEO
and making sure your website is
relevant relies heavily on keyword
research.
The focus should be on keywords
that consumers are actually searching
for, not what you think they are
searching for.
Eliminate ‘assuming’ when it
comes to keyword research for pressure
washing SEO and go straight to
the hard facts. Using tools like Ahrefs
and SEMrush can show you exactly
what your customers are searching for.
Oftentimes, after doing keyword
research with such a trusted tool, you
will find that what you thought people
were searching for actually doesn’t get
searched at all.
Without help, you might go crazy
wondering why your phone isn’t
ringing. This is why considering hiring
a quality SEO company for pressure
washing services is a key consideration.
Once you have identified the top
keywords or search terms for your pressure
washing business, you’ll want to
dedicate a page for each different one.
For example: If your keyword
research shows that users are searching
for ‘pressure washing decks’, then you
will want to have a page dedicated
solely to ‘pressure washing decks.’
With this search term, you will want
to include “pressure washing decks” in
the title and headlines of your dedicated
website pages. You’ll also want
to include the search term ‘pressure
washing decks’ into the meta tags and
descriptions, as well as in the alt text
for images.
Feature the “pressure washing
decks” term prominently and naturally
throughout your website or content.
Avoid stuffing the term in excessively,
though, as this can hurt the quality of
your content.
Also use variations of ‘pressure
washing decks’ and related terms
throughout your website or content.
This can help your content rank for a
broader range of search queries.
Site Speed for Optimal Pressure
Washer SEO: Get your website loading
fast. Then, make it faster.
20 | PRESSURE WASH NEWS | VOL. 5, NO. 1 | SUMMER 2023

Research shows that users that
leave your website increase
by 32% when your website
increases load time from 1 to
3 seconds.
Mobile Friendly: Around
64% of users search for pressure
washing services from a mobile
device.
If your website doesn’t
display correctly for a mobile
user searching for pressure
washing services, they are
gone faster than cake in a
workplace lounge area. SEO
depends heavily on mobile
optimization.
A Call to Action: Make sure your
website has a great call to action when
it first loads. And make sure that call
to action is visible without having to
scroll down.
For example, having a nice headline
with a ‘Quick Quote’ or ‘Free
Estimate’ button has been shown to
increase leads for Servgrow clients.
Here’s an example:
Headline: Pressure Washing Specialists
in [Your Location]
Button: Get a Free Pressure Washing
Estimate
Test and Analyze: Successful SEO
consists of a lot of testing and analyzing.
Always test all of your links and
buttons to make sure they are working.
Nothing drives customers away faster.
Dive deep into your visitors’ behaviors
by analyzing analytics and heat maps.
As an example, one Servgrow
pressure washing client increased lead
generation by simply changing the color
of a button. What color? Test and you’ll
find out what works best for your brand.
A LOCAL
EMPHASIS
SEO focused on targeting a local
area can make a company stand out
organically for searches in a specific
geographical market.
Here are some of the critical variables
that your company needs to get
right when it comes to highly-localized
SEO.
NAP Consistency: NAP information
consists of your pressure
washing company name, address, and
phone number. Your NAP needs to be
consistent across all of your business
listings and citations that you show
up on. If Google sees any inconsistencies
with your NAP, it will be
confused. And Google doesn’t like to
be confused.
Local Pressure Washing Business
Listings and Citations: List your business
on local business listing websites
(Yellow pages, Foursquare, Hotfrog,
CitySearch, Angie’s List, Yelp, and
hundreds more) to obtain citations.
This usually requires adding your NAP
(see above) to such websites and also
including a website link back to your
site. Keep in mind that your NAP also
needs to be consistent on each external
website profile.
Google My Business Listing: This is
similar to the local business listings but
we single it out because it’s a Googleowned
property (and therefore more
important!). Having a full, Googleoptimized
business listing is critical for
local pressure washing SEO. Having an
active company presence -- combined
with positive pressure washing reviews
-- is a big advantage over your competitors
when it comes to local SEO.
Positive Pressure Washing Business
Reviews: If you’re not getting positive
reviews, then your pressure washing
SEO is going to struggle. Cultivate
positive reviews on as many business
listings as you can. Positive reviews
give your business credibility and
play a huge role when converting the
visitor to a customer when they search
for your “Company Name” + reviews.
Next, creating location/city pages for
your pressure washing website is another
important step for successful pressure
washing SEO strategies, especially if you
operate in multiple locations.
A pressure washer location page
structure should look like this:
Home Page: General pressure
washing terms that do not target a
specific city or local area. Usually this
is targeted for the State or country (if
multiple states).
Home page title example:
[Your State(s)] Premier Pressure
Washing Company
The home page should talk about
your general pressure washing services
and the state in general (no city or
location pages). Include overall state
information like landmarks, population,
sports teams, etc. This will
provide more relevancy to the page.
Location Pages (inner
pages): Pressure washing terms
targeting a specific city or location.
Inner city page example: Premier
Pressure Washers in [Your City]
Inner city pages should talk about
the pressure washing services offered
in that location, as well as information
about that particular location.
Include items like location specific
landmarks, population, sports teams,
etc. This will provide more relevancy
to the location page.
A SNIPPETS
STRATEGY
What are pressure washing
featured snippets? How are
they related to SEO for pressure
washers? And how the
heck do you “win” them?
Featured snippets for the
pressure washing industry are
what you see at the top of the
search results that are relevant
topics related to the industry,
often known as position 0.
They usually appear when
a question that is relevant to
the pressure washer is searched for
by a Google user. Google will show
an answer box with a snippet of the
high quality article that answers the
pressure washing question.
Here’s the bottom line: Google
loves showing them and users love
seeing them.
Quality pressure washing content
that targets featured snippet topics is
what Google wants. When you rank
for featured snippets, you’re giving
Google what it wants and it’ll reward
you with higher rankings overall.
A few of Servgrow’s pressure
washing clients have reported that
when they ranked for more featured
snippets, they ranked better for their
service pages too.
“Win” the featured snippets relevant
to pressure washing questions
and Google will reward you with
higher-ranking service pages.
Here are a few examples of featured
snippets relevant to the pressure
washing industry:
• Question: Can pressure washers
remove paint or stains?
• Question: Are pressure washers
efficient for removing dirt and grime?
• Question: Are pressure washers
energy-efficient?
• Question: Are pressure washers
safe for use on all surfaces?
These kinds of pressure washing
questions are being searched a lot by
Google users, which means you get a
big “high five” from Google if you’re
“winning” them.
VOL. 5, NO. 1 | SUMMER 2023 | PRESSURE WASH NEWS | 21

Focus on the following strategies
to be successful with snippets.
1. Write high-quality pressure
washing articles covering the
featured snippet question: Take a
look at an article that currently has
the featured snippet and simply write
a better one. Provide more detail
about the question, provide an expert
opinion, or make your article longer.
2. Build Pressure Washing Authority
(Backlinks): According to a
recent study, backlinks were the #1
contributing factor to high Google
rankings. For Google to differentiate
between two pieces of information,
evaluating backlinks from other
websites is the main way. Authority
is built from backlinks.
How do you get backlinks to build
pressure washer authority in the
industry? Two tactics can generate
quite a bit of authority to outrank the
competition.
1. Explore competitors’ backlinks
by leveraging tools like Ahrefs.
com. These tools will allow you to
see who is linking to your competitors
and not to you. Export that list,
and reach out to those sites to try
to gain a link from them.
2. Do outreach and build relationships
with website owners in the
home services industry. Building
such relationships can generate
high-quality backlinks that provide
massive amounts of authority and
great relevancy to the pressure
washing industry.
Building backlinks and authority
for successful pressure washing SEO
can be done by anyone. It just takes
time -- a lot of time -- which is why
most businesses turn to pressure
washing SEO companies to handle
their authority and backlink building.
AUTHORITY
BUILDING
We saved this particular pressure
washer SEO component for last.
Why? Because this is the hardest one
to implement as it takes quite a bit of
time and resources.
High-level, off-page SEO for
pressure washing companies consists
of actions taken to build authority
(backlinks) from relevant, quality, and
trusted 3rd party websites. This stage
is similar to how we build authority in
the ‘featured snippet’ section.
Think of pressure washer links
from other home service websites
as votes in a popularity contest. The
more quality votes your pressure
washing company gets, the higher you
rank in the search engines.
If fact, it doesn’t matter how
good or high-quality your website is,
without votes or backlinks from other
sites, your pressure washing company
will not rank at the top. Google needs
to see relevant websites vouching/
voting for your site, and backlinks are
the #1 way to do this.
Here are a couple ways of acquiring
backlinks to build pressure washer
authority:
Publish high-quality pressure
washing content on your website that
other websites and bloggers will want
to link to. This can include blog posts,
articles, infographics, and other types
of resources relevant to the pressure
washing industry that provide value to
your audience.
Reach out to other websites and
bloggers in the home services industry
and ask them to link to your website.
This can be done through email, social
media, or by leaving comments on
their blog posts or articles.
Use social media to promote your
website and its content. Share links to
your website and its content on your
social media profiles, and engage with
other users to build your online presence
and attract new visitors to your website.
TRACKING
SEO RESULTS
Set up Google Search Console
and Google Analytics to track your
newfound success.
Google offers Google Search
Console as a free tool to help website
owners monitor their SEO results and
to maintain their website’s presence in
Google Search results.
Pressure washing companies can
also use it to submit their website to
Google for indexing, to see how their
website is performing in search results,
and to get alerts when there are issues
with their website that need to be
addressed.
Use GSC for: Tracking what
keywords your website shows up
for the most and what keywords are
sending the most visitors to your site.
For example: Are customers coming
to your pressure washing website by
searching for pressure washer reviews
or pressure washer for deck cleaning?
Tracking how high on the search
results page your web page appears.
For example: Where do you rank when
someone types in the keywords pressure
washer maintenance, commercial
pressure washer, best pressure washer
for home use or other pressure washing
services related keywords?
Tracking what web pages
are receiving the most visitors.
For example: Are your pages for
commercial pressure washer
receiving more visitors than your
pressure washing pages related to
pressure washing decks?
Google Analytics, by contrast,
helps pressure washers track and
analyze how visitors interact with
their website. Pressure washers
can use this free Google tool to
gain insights into their website
traffic, including where their visitors
are coming from, how long
they stay on the site, and which
pages they view.
Google Analytics is vital in helping
pressure washers understand what
aspects of their pressure washer SEO
is working well on their website and
what might need improvement.
Use GA: To track how many visitors
are coming to your website, how long
they stay on your site, and how many
web pages they view while they are
there.
To track how potential customers
are finding your pressure washing
business. This is a direct correlation to
how well your pressure washing SEO
services are working!
THAT’S A WRAP!
SEO is hands down the best way
to grow your online visibility. But
remember to be patient. Investing into
SEO is a long-term strategy and will
take some time to see results. But by
focusing on the key SEO strategies
outlined in this article, your pressure
washing company will be poised to see
major results.
How Has the
Game Changed?
An expert’s list of the Top 10 Changes in the
Pressure Wash Industry over the last quarter century
BY ALLISON HESTER
I’ve written for the cleaning
industry for more than half my life.
The year was 1994. I was 24 years
old and needed a job, so I answered a
newspaper ad for a magazine editor.
During the interview, I learned
the publication went to the pressure
washing industry. (The what?)
I remember leaving the interview
thinking there was no way I wanted to
write about pressure washers.
Then I got the job. Little did I know
how that would change my life. I’ve
seen a lot of industry changes since I
took that first industry job 28 years ago.
Here, in my opinion, are some of
the bigger ones.
About the author: As the former publisher
of eClean Magazine and past editor for
Cleaner Times Magazine, Allison Hester
has been writing for the exterior cleaning
industry since 1994. She is now a member
of the marketing team at J. Racenstein, a
preeminent distributor of window cleaning
supplies, tools, equipment, and more. The
company has been around for over 110
years -- almost the very beginning of the
professional window cleaning industry!
1
Pressure washers
hit the big box
stores.
This occurred shortly after I started
my job, and for many in the industry,
the idea of pressure washers showing
up in Home Depot was terrifying.
How would equipment distributors
survive?
What about the professional
contract cleaners?
Would they still have a job?
In the long run though, it helped
create awareness and grow the industry.
2
The world-wide
web made
its debut.
I remember around 1996, I wrote
a story explaining what the internet
even was. It was new and most of us
didn’t really understand it.
Of course, we had no idea in that
day how it would take over the world
and change the way the industry did
business.
3
Distributors began
selling nationwide
(and beyond).
When I first started in the industry,
there was a pressure washing distributor
who was ostracized by many in
the industry because he sold his equipment
nationwide, which was seen as a
huge “no-no” in those days.
It was stepping on other distributors’
toes. With the introduction of the
internet, however, the “rules” changed.
4
Working from
the ground.
Not counting the original Tucker
poles, the first water-fed poles started
showing up in the late 1990s, but took
a while to catch on.
Since that time, the technology
keeps on improving to comfortably
reach new heights, keeping window
cleaners off of ladders.
5
Going from
High Pressure
to Soft Washing.
When I first started in the industry,
pressure washing was all about high
pressure.
The higher the psi, the better. Part
of this had to do with environmental
concerns around water consumption
and wastewater, but it also just came
from a misnomer that blasting away dirt
was the best way to clean.
I remember roof cleaning was often
done using surface cleaners.
These days, the industry has
gotten smarter. Today’s professionals
look at flow in order to work faster,
and they recognize that soft washing
is the safest way to go when cleaning
buildings and roofs.
When I first started in the industry,
there were window cleaners and there
were pressure washers, but very rarely
were there both.
As equipment technology advanced
and as awareness of the industries
grew online, contractors began to offer
add-on services.
The water-fed pole has made it
easier for pressure washing contractors
to add window cleaning services since
they can do a basic cleaning without
mops and squeegees.
New products also allow window
cleaners to add soft washing without
having to purchase a pressure washer
or a large soft washing system.
7 Connecting
through bulletin
boards and social
media.
I left Cleaner Times Magazine in
1998, did a little freelance for the
industry starting back in 2000, then
came back full force around 2008.
By then, industry bulletin boards
were a big thing. (They actually started
in the ’90s.)
A few years later, Facebook groups
started catching on and eventually taking
over. It was a whole new world for me,
as I could actually see what industry
members were interested in and what
types of issues they were having.
It also made it so much easier for
contractors to connect with each other.
Social media has been an amazing
catalyst in helping educate the industry
on how to do things better and has been
a huge boost for the industry overall.
8
Respecting the
pressure washing
contractor.
When I first started working for
Cleaner Times, we published two
magazines – one for the distributor,
supplier, and manufacturer, and one
for the contract cleaner.
But we soon decided to merge the
two. This was a bold decision, and
not a popular one with many of the
pressure washing distributors, primarily
because they worried about manufacturers
selling directly to the end user.
In my experience, this attitude
hadn’t gotten a whole lot better when I
started eClean Magazine back in 2012.
Thankfully, I believe we’ve finally
come to a place where this kind of
thinking has at least begun to change.
The partnership of the PWNA and
CETA trade associations has been a
huge step forward.
9
Hosting new
industry events
and organizations.
When I first started, there were
three industry associations: IWCA
for the window cleaners, PWNA for
the pressure washing contractors, and
CETA for the pressure washing manufacturers,
suppliers, and distributors.
(That’s not counting the ISSA.)
We still have these three non-profit
groups, plus a ton of for-profits that
keep coming … and a few going.
There used to be one or two industry
events per year. Now it seems like there’s
something happening every month.
While it’s hard to keep up with all
that’s going on, it’s awesome that there
are so many opportunities to connect
with other industry members and to
learn from each other.
There are also plenty of groups to
choose from, and each has its own
unique feel and personality, so you can
find the one that best fits you.
10
The Growing
Respect for
Women in the
Industry.
Let’s face it. When it comes to
exterior cleaning, it’s still largely a
man’s world.
That is changing, however, and
I believe that this is going to be the
decade for women in the industry.
There are a ton of women who work
for companies behind the scenes, and
there are also more and more women
getting out in the field and cleaning.
It’s time they get the accolades
they deserve.
