C O O M P U T E R S k I L L S — PALO ALTO ADULT SCHOOL/AVENIDAS COMPUTER CLASSES AND TUTORING The Palo Alto Adult School and Avenidas Lifelong Learning are partners providing quality computer education designed for people over 50, but open to all adults. The Avenidas Computer Learning Center (CLC) offers classroom instruction for PC and Mac users, and also offers a unique service called Avenidas CLC One-to-One Tutoring. This program provides individual computer and technology learning experiences between you and an expert tutor. All classes and tutoring sessions are held at Avenidas. Convenient free three-hour city parking is available in the parking garage across the street from Avenidas on Bryant Street. Please note: Registration begins on Monday, December 3, 2012 Classroom Instruction Registration An eight-session class costs $60 ($50 Avenidas member). Register with a Visa or MasterCard by calling (650) 289–5400, in person at the Avenidas front desk located at 450 Bryant Street, Palo Alto, or online at . AVENIDAS CLC ONE-TO-ONE TUTORING REGISTRATION The CLC One-to-One coordinator will determine which tutor meets your needs and will schedule your appointment. Each tutoring session costs $10 ($5 Avenidas member) for a 50-minute session. Purchase your tutoring voucher at the Avenidas front desk prior to the session. Remember to bring the voucher with you to the session. Reserve your appointment with Lois Hall at (650) 308-4CLC (308-4252), Monday to Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. PC CLASSES INTRO TO THE PC AND THE INTERNET Instructor: Carlene Kemmerer Prerequisite: No experience is necessary. Are you just getting started with computers? Get comfortable with basic computer usage and start to use the Internet by sending and receiving email. If you have limited computer mouse or keyboard experience, we recommend that you sign up for a CLC One-to-One tutoring session prior to the start of class to get dedicated help. Call the CLC One-to-One coordinator and ask to learn basic mouse and keyboard skills. 4 wks • February 5–February 28 Tuesday and Thursday • 10 a.m.–12 noon Cost $60 ($50 member) • Register with Avenidas BUILDING YOUR COMPUTER SKILLS Instructor: Sara Girton Prerequisite: Successful completion of Intro to the PC and the Internet or equivalent experience is recommended. Further develop your computer skills using the address book, mailing lists and folders in email. You will customize your desktop, find helpful websites, search for information on the Internet. and begin file and folder management. This class will use Windows 7. 4 wks • January 8–January 31 Tuesday and Thursday • 10 a.m.–12 noon Cost $60 ($50 member) • Register with Avenidas 8 WORKING WITH FILES AND FOLDERS Instructor: Larry Weber Prerequisite: Successful completion of Building your Computer Skills or equivalent experience is recommended. Building on skills you learned in Intro to the PC and Building your Computer Skills, you will use files of different types, organize your folders so that you can easily find documents, and work with images and text files using basic editing programs. You will then be prepared to take our more advanced courses. No class on January 21 and February 18. 8 wks • January 7–March 11 Monday • 1–3 p.m. Cost $60 ($50 member) • Register with Avenidas INTRO TO EXCEL ON THE PC Instructor: Carlene Kemmerer Prerequisite: Successful completion of Building your Computer Skills or equivalent experience is recommended. Use Excel to plan and organize everyday activities such as balancing your checkbook, and creating and maintaining a budget. You will learn to enter data, create formulas, format spreadsheets and create charts. Examples and exercises reinforce learning. Students should have Microsoft Office 2007 or 2010 installed on their home computers. C O M P U T E R S k I L L S — MAC CLASSES INTRODUCTION TO THE MAC Instructor: Bill Whitmer Prerequisite: No experience is necessary. Are you just getting started with computers and using a Mac? Get comfortable powering up and shutting down the computer, and using the keyboard and mouse. We’ll explore the Internet with emphasis on searching for information with Google and using email. No class on January 31 and February 7. 8 wks • January 10–March 14 Thursday • 10 a.m.–12 noon Cost $60 ($50 member) • Register with Avenidas BUILDING YOUR MAC SKILLS Instructor: Sarah Gitter Prerequisite: Successful completion of Introduction to the Mac or equivalent experience is recommended. Further develop your Mac skills with an introduction to some popular Apple applications including Address Book, Dashboard, iTunes and iPhoto. Copy and save info from Safari, send and receive email attachments, and receive a video call using Skype. Do a Software Update and customize your Dock. No class on January 21. 4 wks • January 7–February 4 Monday and Wednesday • 1–3 p.m. Cost $60 ($50 member) • Register with Avenidas DISCOVERING MAC TOOLS Instructor: Sarah Gitter Prerequisite: Successful completion of Building Your Mac Skills or equivalent experience is recommended. Use helpful Mac tools including Photo Booth, Spotlight, Grab, Time Machine, some System Preferences and Safari features. Areas of student interest will be included. No class on February 18. 4 wks • February 11–March 11 Monday and Wednesday • 1–3 p.m. Cost $60 ($50 member) • Register with Avenidas INTRODUCTION TO MS WORD AND EXCEL ON THE MAC Instructor: Shelly Kay Prerequisite: Successful completion of Building your Mac Skills or equivalent experience is recommended. What are Word and Excel and what can they do for you? This course provides an introduction to these extensively used and versatile Microsoft applications. Learn how to create and format a document in Word and a spreadsheet using Excel. 8 wks • January 8–February 26 Tuesday • 10 a.m.–12 noon Cost $60 ($50 member) • Register with Avenidas PC AND MAC LABS AND CLC ONE-TO-ONE TUTORING DROP-IN PC AND MAC LABS Instructor: Staff Prerequisite: None Our PC and Mac labs are open on Wednesday mornings to help our currently enrolled students practice the skills taught in class. Tutors are present to help you with your practice. 10 wks • January 9–March 13 Wednesday • 10 a.m.–12 noon No fee for enrolled students • Registration not required CLC ONE-TO-ONE TUTORING Instructor: Staff Prerequisite: None. CLC One-to-One tutoring sessions provide a way to get individualized help and to work on specific skills in a one-toone teaching environment. Tutoring is available on a wide variety of subjects and can include learning to use Mac and PC software as well as smart phones and tablets. Whether you are a beginner with little computer experience or a seasoned veteran, we have a tutor who can help you. Tutoring sessions are open to both Avenidas members and non-members. Avenidas members receive a discounted rate. If you would like to schedule a 50-minute session, contact the coordinator, who will work with you to determine the most appropriate tutor for your needs.
