H O M E A N D E N V I R O N M E N T SUSTAINABLE HOME VEGETABLE GARDENING Instructor: Candace Simpson, UCCE Master Gardener Establish a successful, environmentally responsible food garden that provides delicious vegetables and herbs every month of the year. A comprehensive list of sustainable gardening practices for vegetable crops in Santa Clara County will be covered— from soil preparation to management of common pests, weeds and diseases. The instructor is a Master Gardener, a University of California Cooperative Extension volunteer program dedicated to providing research-based gardening information to home gardeners. 6 wks • February 5–March 12 Tuesday • 7–9 p.m. Palo Alto HS Rm 1701 • $84 HOW TO MANAGE YOUR KITCHEN OR BATH REMODEL! Instructor: Mollyanne Sherman If you want to be involved in your kitchen or bath remodel or even do it yourself, this is the course for you. In five weeks, Mollyanne will take you through the process, from planning through construction. Learn how to get the information you need to construct a project budget and schedule, and how to keep the project under control. Mollyanne is Certified in Kitchen, Bath & Interior Design as well as Green Building, with extensive experience in major renovations. A $30 materials fee is payable to the instructor. 5 wks • February 12–March 12 Tuesday • 6:30–9 p.m. Palo Alto HS Rm 1706 • $88 22 FLORAL DESIGN WITH IKEBANA Instructor: Thanh Kosen Nguyen Learn traditional and contemporary ikebana. Each week students will complete one or two designs, then bring them home to display. Bring sturdy garden scissors, a pyrex bowl and a large pin frog for practice. Information will be given on what additional ikebana equipment you will need and where to get it. A $100 flower material fee is payable to the instructor, or students can bring their own flowers. The instructor has more than 22 years of experience and is certified for both Wafu and Sogetsu styles. 10 wks • January 8–March 12 Tuesday • 1–4 p.m. Greendell P2 • $70* GARDENING IN WINTER Instructor: Sherri Bohan The winter dormant season is our best chance to prevent and control garden diseases. Learn what safe sprays will work for pests and diseases, newest planting techniques, soil prep, water saving garden plants, edibles in a landscape or vegetable garden, proper irrigation, mulching, pruning and summer bulb selection. Beginning gardeners gain confidence to work in their gardens and experienced gardeners enjoy open discussion in class. With a degree in Ornamental Horticulture, the instructor has been a professional gardener/ entrepreneur locally for 30 years. A materials fee of $5 is payable to the instructor at the first class. 10 wks • January 9–March 13 Wednesday • 10 a.m.–12 noon Cubberley A-2 • $55 SEWING Instructor: DeAnne Appleton Learn the fundamentals of sewing through demonstration of various techniques and hands-on practice. Sew a project of your choice with individual help from the instructor. Think green! Learn to re-purpose, redesign, reinvent, alter or mend clothing you already have and love. M E D I A PODCAST THE POSSIBILITIES Instructor: Mark Taylor, KMVT Prequisite: Familiarity with computers and the internet. A familiarity with audio and video files, and XML coding would be helpful. Learn how a podcast is developed from episode creation to viewer downloads. A practice podcast will be created, with student participation, then broadcast during the class. Sample materials will be available to attendees who bring a flash drive. The instructor is a media specialist with a background in television production, web design, photography and visual effects. He currently teaches classes at KMVT in Mountain View, an affiliated station of the Midpeninsula Community Media Center. 3 wks • January 28–February 11 Monday • 6:30–9 p.m. Palo Alto HS Rm CL1 • $53 BLOGGING ACROSS TWO LANGUAGES (in English and Spanish) Instructor: Julio Navarette Prequisite: Basic computer use and understanding. Learn about different types of blogs, create your own blog and begin posting original written work in Spanish and/or English. Perform writing exercises, and have opportunities to share personal stories and unique experiences in creative ways. If you have always wanted to express yourself to a broad audience, this is a class for you. The instructor is the creative writing coordinator at Educators for Fair Consideration (E4FC).
