Resurrectional Apolytikion
The stone having been sealed by the Pharisees
and chief priests, and Your all-immaculate body
being guarded by soldiers, You rose on the third
day, O Lord and Savior, granting life unto the
world. Then the powers of the heavens cried out
to You, O Giver of Life, and shouted, "Glory to
Your resurrection, O Christ! Glory to Your eternal
rule! Glory to Your plan for saving us, only
benevolent God!"
For the Feast
You were transfigured upon the mountain, O
Christ our God, showing to Your disciples Your
glory as much as they could bear. Do also in us,
sinners though we may be, shine Your everlasting
light, by the intercessions of the Theotokos,
O Giver of light. Glory to You.
Apolytikion of St. Catherine
Let us praise the most auspicious bride of
Christ, the divine Katherine, protectress of Sinai,
our aid and our help. For, she brilliantly
silenced the eloquence of the impious by the
sword of the spirit, and now, crowned as a martyr,
she asks great mercy for all.
Apolytikion of the Church
Ιn giving birth, you did preserve your virginity;
in your dormition you did not forsake the world
O Theotokos. You were translated onto life,
since you were the Mother of life; And by your
intercessions do you redeem our souls from
death.
Kontakion
Upon the mountain were You transfigured,
and Your disciples beheld Your glory as far
as they were able, O Christ our God; so that
when they would see You crucified they
might understand that Your Passion was
deliberate, and declare to the world that in
truth You are the Father's radiance.

EPISTLE READING
CORINTHIANS (4:9-16)
Brethren, God has exhibited us apostles as
last of all, like men sentenced to death; because
we have become a spectacle to the
world, to angels and to men. We are fools
for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ.
We are weak, but you are strong. You are
held in honor, but we in disrepute. To the
present hour we hunger and thirst, we are illclad
and buffeted and homeless, and we labor,
working with our own hands. When reviled,
we bless; when persecuted, we endure;
when slandered, we try to conciliate;
we have become, and are now, as the refuse
of the world, the off-scouring of all things. I
do not write this to make you ashamed, but
to admonish you as my beloved children.
For though you have countless guides in
Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I
became your father in Christ Jesus through
the gospel. I urge you, then, be imitators of
me.

θέατρον ἐγενήθημεν τῷ κόσμῳ, καὶ
ἀγγέλοις, καὶ ἀνθρώποις. Ἡμεῖς μωροὶ διὰ
Χριστόν, ὑμεῖς δὲ φρόνιμοι ἐν Χριστῷ·
ἡμεῖς ἀσθενεῖς, ὑμεῖς δὲ ἰσχυροί· ὑμεῖς

GOSPEL READING
MATTHEW (17:14-23)
At that time, a man came up to Jesus and kneeling before him
said, "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he
suffers terribly; for often he falls into the fire, and often into the
water. And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not
heal him." And Jesus answered, "O faithless and perverse generation,
how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with
you? Bring him here to me." And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and
the boy was cured instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why
could we not cast it out?" He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly I say to
you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move
hence to yonder place,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. But this
kind never comes out except by prayer and fasting." As they were gathering in Galilee,
Jesus said to them, "The Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they
will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day."

αὐτῷ ἄνθρωπος γονυπετῶν αὐτὸν καὶ λέγων· Κύριε, ἐλέησόν
μου τὸν υἱόν, ὅτι σεληνιάζεται καὶ κακῶς πάσχει· πολλάκις γὰρ
πίπτει εἰς τὸ πῦρ καὶ πολλάκις εἰς τὸ ὕδωρ. καὶ προσήνεγκα
αὐτὸν τοῖς μαθηταῖς σου, καὶ οὐκ ἠδυνήθησαν αὐτὸν
θεραπεῦσαι. ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς εἶπεν· ὦ γενεὰ ἄπιστος καὶ
διεστραμμένη! ἕως πότε ἔσομαι μεθ᾿ ὑμῶν; ἕως πότε ἀνέξομαι ὑμῶν; φέρετέ μοι αὐτὸν
ὧδε. καὶ ἐπετίμησεν αὐτῷ ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς, καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἀπ᾿ αὐτοῦ τὸ δαιμόνιον καὶ ἐθεραπεύθη
ὁ παῖς ἀπὸ τῆς ὥρας ἐκείνης. Τότε προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ τῷ ᾿Ιησοῦ κατ᾿ ἰδίαν εἶπον·
διατί ἡμεῖς οὐκ ἠδυνήθημεν ἐκβαλεῖν αὐτό; ὁ δὲ ᾿Ιησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· διὰ τὴν ἀπιστίαν

μετάβηθι ἐντεῦθεν ἐκεῖ, καὶ μεταβήσεται, καὶ οὐδὲν ἀδυνατήσει ὑμῖν. τοῦτο δὲ τὸ γένος
οὐκ ἐκπορεύεται εἰ μὴ ἐν προσευχῇ καὶ νηστείᾳ. ᾿Αναστρεφομένων δὲ αὐτῶν εἰς τὴν
Γαλιλαίαν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς· μέλλει ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοσθαι εἰς χεῖρας
ἀνθρώπων καὶ ἀποκτενοῦσιν αὐτόν, καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἐγερθήσεται. καὶ ἐλυπήθησαν
σφόδρα.

This week’s Sermon
The faith of the father.
St. Matthew 17 (14-23)
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ
Today in the Gospel reading Christ is challenging our faith. Usually
we are happy about the strength of our faith until we get to a
critical moment in our life. Our faith is always challenged when we have obstacles in front
of us to overcome. Our life is possible because of faith. We could not do anything if we
did not believe in ourselves. We could not have a normal social life if we did not believe
in people who surround us. We could not live our lives in fullness if we did not believe in
God.
In modern culture faith is more closely associated with belief. When we ask people
what is faith, they usually answer that faith is about believing in the existence of something
invisible. The Greek word however for faith has much deeper meaning. It refers to a
personal trust, a trust that is a result of a deep relationship, a trust that exists between a
child and a healthy parent or between a husband and a wife. It is a kind of trust that can be
broken only by death.
In today’s Gospel we see that a man who was desperate comes to Christ with a
desperate request. His son the most precious thing in his life is out of his hands, he belongs
to the demons. He has unconditional Love for his son but his relationship with God
is not where it needs to be.
Starting with Abraham, God has proven that he loves us unconditionally with the
love of healthy parents to their children. This is a love that can always be trusted, love that
never fails, and love that is always ready for self-sacrifice. This love however works best
if it is mutual, which depends upon the trust being mutual. Starting from the times of
Abraham we have always broken God's trust and God has always renewed His covenant
with us.

In this passage Christ is teaching us that faith is like a seed and it is capable of
growing if we nourish it by fasting and warm it up under the sun of prayer.
We need to do our best and always keep our eyes on God so that we can always
see His hand that is stretched towards us to help when we need it most. Our prayer should
be, ''I believe you Lord, help my unbelief.''
Κύρηγμα της εβδομάδας
Αγαπητοί εν Χριστώ αδελφοί,
Σήμερα στην ανάγνωση του Ευαγγελίου, ο Χριστός προκαλεί την πίστη μας.
Συνήθως είμαστε ευχαριστημένοι με τη δύναμη της πίστης μας μέχρι να φτάσουμε σε μια
κρίσιμη στιγμή της ζωής μας. Η πίστη μας προκαλείται όταν έχουμε εμπόδια μπροστά
μας να ξεπεράσουμε. Η ζωή μας είναι δυνατή λόγω της πίστης. Δεν θα μπορούσαμε να
κάνουμε τίποτα αν δεν πιστεύαμε στον εαυτό μας. Δεν θα μπορούσαμε να έχουμε μια
κανονική κοινωνική ζωή αν δεν πιστεύαμε σε ανθρώπους που μας περιβάλλουν. Δεν θα
μπορούσαμε να ζήσουμε τη ζωή μας σε πληρότητα εάν δεν πιστεύαμε στο Θεό.
Στη σύγχρονη κουλτούρα η πίστη συνδέεται στενότερα με την έννοια του
“πιστεύω”. Όταν ρωτάμε τους ανθρώπους, τι είναι η πίστη, συνήθως απαντούν ότι η
πίστη αφορά την ύπαρξη κάτι αόρατου. Η ελληνική λέξη όμως για την πίστη έχει πολύ
βαθύτερη σημασία. Αναφέρεται σε μια προσωπική εμπιστοσύνη, μια εμπιστοσύνη που
είναι αποτέλεσμα μιας βαθιάς σχέσης, σε μια εμπιστοσύνη που υπάρχει μεταξύ ενός
παιδιού και ενός υγιούς γονέα ή μεταξύ ενός συζύγου και μίας συζύγου. Είναι ένα είδος
εμπιστοσύνης που μπορεί να χαθεί μόνο με το θάνατο.
Στο σημερινό Ευαγγέλιο βλέπουμε ότι ένας άνθρωπος που ήταν απελπισμένος
έρχεται στον Χριστό με ένα απεγνωσμένο αίτημα. Ο γιος του, το πολυτιμότερο πράγμα
στη ζωή του έχει ξεφύγει από τα χέρια του, ανήκει στους δαίμονες. Έχει αγάπη άνευ
όρων για τον γιο του, αλλά η σχέση του με τον Θεό δεν είναι εκεί που πρέπει.
Ξεκινώντας από τον Αβραάμ, ο Θεός έχει αποδείξει ότι μας αγαπά άνευ όρων,
όπως η αγάπη των υγιών γονιών προς τα παιδιά τους. Αυτή είναι μια αγάπη που
μπορούμε πάντα να εμπιστευτούμε, μια αγάπη που δεν αποτυγχάνει ποτέ, και μια αγάπη
που είναι πάντα έτοιμη για αυτοθυσία. Αυτή η αγάπη όμως λειτουργεί καλύτερα αν είναι
αμοιβαία, πράγμα που εξαρτάται από το αν η εμπιστοσύνη είναι αμοιβαία. Ξεκινώντας
από την εποχή του Αβραάμ, ανέκαθεν χάναμε την εμπιστοσύνη του Θεού και ο Θεός
πάντα ανανέωνε το συμβόλαιό Του μαζί μας.

Σε αυτό το απόσπασμα ο Χριστός μας διδάσκει ότι η πίστη είναι σαν σπόρος και
είναι ικανή να αναπτυχθεί εάν τη θρέφουμε με νηστεία και τη ζεσταίνουμε κάτω από τον
ήλιο της προσευχής.
Πρέπει να κάνουμε το καλύτερο δυνατό και να στρέφουμε πάντα το βλέμμα μας
στο Θεό, ώστε να βλέπουμε πάντα το χέρι Του που απλώνεται προς εμάς για να μας
βοηθήσει όταν το χρειαζόμαστε περισσότερο. Η προσευχή μας πρέπει να είναι,
"Πιστεύω Κύριε, βοήθησέ με στην απιστία μου".
In Appreciation for Icon Donations
We celebrate all the saints whose icons have been dedicated
by our parishioners. On the Sunday following the Feast
of the Saint we offer Artoklasia and a trisagion service for
the good health of the living members and eternal memory
of the deceased members of the donor family.
Γιορτάζουμε όλους τους αγίους των οποίων οι εικόνες
έχουν αφιερωθεί από τους ενορίτες μας. Την Κυριακή που
ακολουθεί την εορτή του Αγίου προσφέρουμε Αρτοκλασία
και τρισάγιο για την υγεία των ζώντων μελών και για την
αιώνια μνήμη των εκλιπόντων μελών του δότρια
οικογένεια.

& a Trisagion Service for the eternal memory of the deceased
members of Leventis family.
