September gardening priorities
Rachel Vogan cues your
gardening goals for the month
ahead.
And just like that, springishere. As the
trees burstinto life,all of asudden
things start to feel alive again.
Neighbourhoods are alive with the
sounds of lawnmowers, yet anothersign
that spring is here.
And here’swhat you should be getting
on with in response.
Prioritise edibles
Plenty to do in the vegetable garden this
month. Carrot, beetroot and radish can
all be sown outside. Startseeds of frostsensitive
crops likecapsicum, chilli,
tomato,eggplantand cucumber inside
or undercover. Plant out seedlings of
lettuce, cabbage,cauliflower, broccoli,
celery,kale, spring onion, spinach and
variousother leafy greens. Check on
garlic crops; to ensure the area is weedfree,
and add layers of mulch to protect
the developing crop. Sweet corn and
beans are bothsensitive to frost, so be
carefulabout planting theseout too
early unless they are undercover.
Early potatoes can be planted outside
in warmparts.
Get ahead of weeds
The nemesis of manygardeners is
weeds! As the soil warmsand the days
get longer, the changing conditions
triggerweed seeds to germinate.Early
intervention is best: usingahoe or a
sharp hand tool (an old knife works
well), slice weed seedlings off at ground
level to preventthem from becoming
established. Thicklayers of mulch help
preventweeds from sprouting by
restricting the light that triggers
germination. Pouring boiling water
over softannual weeds can kill small
weeds.
Delight in dahlias
The revivalofdahlias is amazing –they
are such magnificent flowering
powerhouses. And it’s no wonder as
these flowering divas will thrive with
little care and attention if planted in a
sunny spotwith good drainage. Existing
clumps can be divided before new
growth starts to appear. Keen an eye out
for slugs and snails whennew shoots
are emerging from the ground. Dahlias
are easy and reliable plants for planters
and containers. Dwarf and mediumsize
hybrids suit potsbest. The large,
dinnerplate varieties are bettersuited
to being planted into the garden. Stake
the taller hybrids to avoid the stems
breaking under the weight of the heavy
flowers.
Mow,sow and feed lawns
Neattidy lawns transform outdoor
spaces. Over winter it can be hard to
keeplawns looking sharp. If grass has
becomelong and tatty, avoid the
temptation to giveitadrastic hair cut in
one single mowing.Severecutbacks can
trigger all sorts of lawn issues and put
the grass underalot of stress, which can
lead to problems in the months ahead.
It is better to reducethe height over a
couple of mowings. Cut back edges now
to complementthe short back and sides
after mowing. Apply lawn fertiliser in
springtoprovide aboosttothe grass.
New lawns can be sown now –choose a
variety of seed that suits your region
and needs. See is quicktogerminate at
this time of year.
Make aslug pub
Warmerweathersees an increase in the
numbers of slugs and snails.These
clevercreatures are not easytospot
duringthe day as they slideunder
leaves, pots and debris, and feed at
night.
Hand control works well to limitthe
numbers, but this must be done at night,
which isn’t always practical.
An alternative method of control is to
make a‘slug pub’toentice theminto.
Fill asaucer or shallow container with
beer (or anything elsesweet) and nestle
it into the soil; the prey will be attracted
to it and fallinto the container. Slug
and snail baits are useful to control
slugsand snails, but regular
application is required for it to be
successful.Thick crushedlayers of
eggshells worktoo (but with the price of
eggs,they may be scarce).
Spruce up outdoorliving areas
Now is the perfecttime to give outdoor
livingrooms arefresh, clean and tidy in
preparationfor spending more time
outside over the coming months.Start
by removing the furniture,pots and
barbecues,where possible, then sweep
any debris away and remove moss and
lichen (cleanupspraysare useful when
dealing withmoss and lichen buildup).
Give outdoor furniture awash.
Refresh and fertilise container
planters and hangingbaskets,and fill in
any gaps withnewseason annuals and
herbs.
Rotate container plantstoget an even
amount of sunlight.
