Nth Canty senior rugby team to tour Japan
By LINDSAY KERR
North Canterbury’s rugby tour to Japan
at the end of Septemberwill herald in a
new and ambitious project for the sub
union.
In its 120 year history it has never had
ateam venturesofar away from its base.
Parts of the South Island are usually
the furthestaway fieldsthey have played
on.
The sub union has been successful in
bringing All Blacksthroughits club and
representativeprogrammes, but the
latterhas always been primarily focused
on playing the Ellesmere sub union side
in its annual clash for the Southbridge
Shield.
The representative programmethis
year remained focused on this fixture,
but following its victory last week, all
hands have moved to its forthcoming
Japanesetour which involves 29 players.
The touristhe brain child of North
Canterbury’s own Robbie Deans, now
coachinginJapan,and the playing squad
will base themselves with his club, the
Saitama Wild Knights.
In the truespirit of amateurrugby,the
trip is being entirely selffunded.
This includes the playerswhere each
member of the squad havemade
significant contributions.
The intention of the tripisabout
developingplayers,and offering
meaningful professional player
pathways, without them having to move
away from their clubs and out of the
NorthCanterbury catchment area.
Thereisalso the viewthat this trip will
occur regularly —potentially biannually.
Deanswho is one of agood number of
All Blackstohave come from the local
competition,believesthe benefits to the
players will be significant.
‘‘Thisisagreat opportunity for players
withinthe NorthCanterbury club
competition to experience not only
cultural benefits of touring, but also
immersioninthe Wild Knights rugby
programme,’’ he says.
‘‘From my experience and in my
opinion, this is anolosescenario that
will greatly benefit the individuals who
get outside theircomfort zone and grow,
and subsequently North Canterbury
rugby will grow, as they return to their
clubs.
‘‘We lookforward to welcomingNorth
Canterbury to Kumagaya.’’
The programmewill essentially be to
live like aWild Knight, and all players
and management will train and operate
alongside the professional set up.
The schedule will requireplayers to
attend skills, fitness,team runs, tactics
and strategy sessions along with playing
two games against WildKnightsides.
