SCHOOL HOLIDAY FUN
Sparking imagination
Authentic creative exploration takes skill
to nurture. Who better to do that than
artists themselves?
School holidays at Te Matatiki Toi Ora
The Arts Centre involves local artists,
dancers, circus performers, musicians,
craftspeople and story-tellers, who will
inspire, enthuse and spark the imagination
of tamariki.
The jam-packed programme is too big to
list in full here. Suffice to say, it caters for all
types.
If your creative child would benefit from
spending a chunk of time with like-minded
kids, consider the Creative Day Out for ages
8-13. They’ll spend the day immersed in
art, movement/dance, games, and a special
movie screening.
There’s plenty for the musically inclined,
ranging from making musical instruments
to drumming workshops, and interactive
performances including Music with Michal,
a Skiffle and Junk Band Jam, Superhero
Circus, Drum and Dance, percussion, and
dance shows.
For those who need to move, check out
the circus and theatre workshops at Altiora
in The Gym, now well set up for aerial work
and tumbling (they cater for adults, too!)
Meet and work with artist Priscilla Rose
Howe through SCAPE Public Art. Find out
how Star Wars draws on Ancient Greek
and Roman mythology and go in the draw
for awesome Lego. Plus, plenty of craft
activities, ceramics, stories, classic movies,
unstructured play, and more.
Canterbury Museum’s pop-up
Canterbury Museum’s major five-year
redevelopment is now underway at its
Rolleston Avenue site. While we wait for the
new Museum to open, you can still visit the
Museum pop-up a few blocks away in the
Centre of Contemporary Art Toi Moroki
(CoCA) building at 66 Gloucester Street.
Here, half of the exhibition space is
dedicated to showcasing temporary
exhibitions. These will change a few
times a year to keep things interesting for
returning visitors. Currently running, until
3 December, is Six Extinctions featuring
the life-sized cast of the largest T Rex ever
found.
The other half of the space displays
Museum collection highlights and visitor
Advertising Feature
favourites, such as the much-loved horse
that kids love to ride, objects from the old
Antarctic Gallery, and rarely displayed
items including exotic taxidermied animals.
At the Museum pop-up, visitors can look
at plans for the redevelopment and get an
idea of what to expect when the Museum
reopens its doors on Rolleston Avenue.
The upstairs exhibition space can be
accessed via stairs or elevator. Downstairs,
you’ll find the CoCA exhibition space,
which showcases modern art made in or
connected to Waitaha Canterbury, as well
as Lux Espresso, brewers of some of the best
coffee in town.
Visiting the pop-up museum is free,
though donations are much appreciated.
