Blinds & Shutters - Issue 4/2023

As we reach the end of summer which has not been the greatest in terms of weather it will be interesting to see which way the wind is blowing in regard to the environment as the next general election approaches. I live close to London and the ULEZ extension has been on top of the agenda for many people. The statistics on London’s air quality are extremely worrying with the WHO saying that air pollution far exceeds limits. Do we ignore the evidence and continue to put lives at risk? I would imagine we would not like a polluting business near our home or place of work and it is impressive that blinds companies are stepping up and taking on board their environmental responsibilities. We are all aware that there is a cost involved, but it seems a small price to pay for a healthy future. John Hatcher editor

FABRIC
The right choice
Yewdale says good
fabric selection is
vital
Blind fabrics are the definitive component of
any blind, dictating the degree of shading
that a room receives. There are a plethora of
fabrics to choose from, each with its own unique
appearance, benefits and applications. Yewdale is a
designer and producer of blinds, with a wide range
of YewdaleDefiant® fabrics to suit a variety of
shading requirements and environments.
Thames is Yewdale’s most popular fabric and for
good reason. It is an antimicrobial dimout fabric that
is well-suited to offices, hospitals and other
commercial environments. A dimout fabric is an
intermediate fabric that provides a level of
screening that lies between translucent and
blackout fabrics. Dimout fabrics are suitable for
spaces where total darkness is not required but
where significant light control is still beneficial.
The Thames fabric range recently welcomed 18
new colours, bringing the total available to 40
dazzling colours. This update means you can easily
find a colour that catches your eye from the newly
expanded collection. The weaving process ensures
the fabric has a distinguished and stylish look
suitable for most applications.
Thames provides a high degree of privacy due to
its opacity, making it a good choice for businesses.
The dimout fabric also offers protection against the
sun’s heat and even helps to reduce the need for
heating during winter. The fabric provides insulation
that works particularly well when fitted within a
cassette blind with side channels. Businesses can
reduce their annual energy consumption by using
blinds to control the indoor temperature.
Thames is Biosafe certified, highlighting the
antimicrobial formula has been rigorously tested to
ensure it provides effective inhibition of infection.
As a result, hospitals and other healthcare settings
often select Thames for shading requirements. The
blind fabric is also moisture-resistant and flameretardant,
making it compliant with various building
guidelines.
Yewdale stock a range of widths to help you
manufacture blinds in-house and keep joins to a
minimum to assist in design, fabrication and
wastage reduction. Just 0.30mm thick, this dimout
blind fabric is ideal for vertical and roller blinds. You
can purchase the fabric in 127mm and 89mm
louvre widths and the following roller fabric widths:
2000mm, 2500mm and 3000mm.
Many of the Thames fabric colours match with
Yewdale’s Eden Blackout range, which means you
can mix and match Dimout and Blackout fabrics in
different rooms. Yewdale ensure colour matching is
simple whilst achieving different shading levels.
