School fundraiser heats up
Lincoln High School
students Brianna Searle
(year 11) and Molly
Laurence (year 12) find
out what the school’s
head students have
been up to with their
Grilla Campaign
EVERY HEAD student wants
to have a lasting impact on their
school. To leave a legacy behind
and shape the lives of students
yet to come.
In March this year, four head
students at Lincoln High School
launched a new fundraising
project with the aim of raising
$11,000 for a new school barbeque/grill
trailer.
Amélie Shalfoon, Sam Draper,
Conrad Goddard, and Emma
Crossland are leading the Grilla
Campaign, collecting donations
and pledges from the community.
In order to encourage schoolwide
participation, money has
to be ‘earned’ by students before
being put towards the trailer.
Students who participate in
house events and school life are
rewarded with G-coins.
Once earned, the currency,
created by the head students
to help students visualise their
contribution, is matched by real
community dollars and put
towards the grill.
The idea is that after so many
years of pandemics, cancelled
events, interrupted learning and
a school rebuild, the common
goal of fundraising for the grill
will unite students to work
together.
The aim is that the piece of
equipment will last the next ten
years, being used for school and
community events both on-site
and off-site.
Head of taha whānau Emma
Crossland said the grill would
become the “central pillar of the
LHS community”.
Purchase is planned for October
to welcome the new Year 9s
for 2024 on their Funday with a
free sausage at lunchtime.
A good amount of progress has
been made already, though more
fundraising is being undertaken
and more support is needed.
The old school barbeque is still
in use, and is brought out for
sausage sizzles, market days, and
Conrad Goddard, Emma Crossland, Sam
Draper and Amélie Shalfoon are spearheading
the campaign to raise funds for a trailer like
the one pictured.
house events.
Students are updated about
the campaign in every assembly,
and house events are nearly
completed.
On March 23, 242 G-coins
were earned by students during
aftermaths style quiz. Students
from each link class were put
into teams and raced to answer
questions while representing
their house. This then meant that
$242 was put into the account to
pay for the new trailer.
Amélie, Sam, Conrad, and
Emma, hope to encourage many
more students to give new activities
a go and are keen for more
community donations.
Students have raised just over
$7000 so far, so it is now the final
push to get the community to
support the student participation
before October.
Individuals, organisations,
and businesses that would like
to support this campaign can
contact the Lincoln High School
office. Pledges of $1000 or more
will get a logo and/or name onto
the Grilla trailer.
