The VioletVortexand Waiau Winder, namedfollowing thousands of publicvotes, offerone of thebest aquaticexperiences in New Zealand. The VioletVortexisanadrenalinefuelled ride, full of twists and turns,and featuresLED lighting technology. The slower WaiauWinder features visual projection technology, neverseen before in New Zealand. It hasthe ability to display unique imagery inside the slides so for example, at the moment, it gives sliders the feeling of an underwater experience but in future, it could make sliders feel as if they’re sledging through mountains. The slides are replacing the oldgreen and beige slides builtin1998,whichhad an estimated 17 million rides taken on them. They complement the Superbowl and Conical Thrill slide experiences, which opened in 2010 and 2019. The new slideswill be single body slides, eliminating the need for rafts, and they both feature extendedrun outs, providing asmoothexit without the needfor a splashdown pool. Yesterday’sopening ceremony was attended by Hurunui Mayor Marie Black, who said the $3.2 millioninvestment was goingtoelevate Hanmer Springs as a destination.. ‘‘As the sole ownersofHanmer Springs Thermal Pools&Spa, the Hurunui community sees the benefits of these investments.This year, the complex is set to pay $2.4 millionindividends, which is ring fencedfor community parks and reserves,’’she said. The ceremony alsowelcomed more than 60, year three and fourstudents from Lincoln Primary School, who won HSTPS Ultimate BallRun school competition, earning the privilege of the first public rides. Teacherswere encouraged to foster the development of science and maths skills as students designed and built theirbest ball run, with bonus points awarded for team work and involvingwater. Leithfield School was runner up. Teacher Andy Scottsaid they loved the experience of entering the competition. ‘‘It wassuch ablast. In our Kōpara class, we had 27 builders from year 4, year 5and year 6. All of the tamariki had theirsection, drawing blueprints and planning for over a week, and then turned up on building day and gave it 100 percent. It was acracker experience,full of teamwork, which was fantastic fromaneducatorstandpoint.’’ GraemeAbbot, General Manager at HSTPS says the opening of the slides is a major milestone. ‘‘Thisisasignificantcelebration, following months of relentless effortand commitment from the entire project team.
