When the opportunity to lead the Kaikōura Mayors’ Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ)programme came up, Ms McMillan jumpedatthe chance. ‘‘I had always wantedtowork withyouth. Iwas ayoung mum myself and so Iknow that having someone takethe timefor you makes abig difference.’’ Ms McMillan workedinthe wine industry in Blenheim before moving to Kaikōura earlier this year with her partner for the lifestyle and to be closertoher father. While she has not workedwith young peoplebefore, she has her own experience of becomingamum at 17years and the challenges of findingwork. ‘‘I’m 37yearsold and Ihave finally found my fit. ‘‘We are all on apath and we need to help young people to find their path. ‘‘It is about helpingthem get someskills and find the confidence, and when they get some confidence you can stepback and lead from behind.’’ The Kaikōura MTFJ programme placed 60 peopleinemployment in the year to June 30, but thefunding has been reduced with anew target of 38 for thenext 12 months. ‘‘We just want themtobehappy and enjoying theirrole.’’ She said she hoped to organised a careers expo next year to showcasewhat employment opportunities Kaikōura has to offer. Local businesseswere supportive of the programme, but many were finding it tough in the present economic environment. She said mental health and anxiety was a barrier for many local youth. But she said she was lucky to have agood ‘‘right hand man’’ in Mark Paterson, who has recently been appointed youth employability coordinator. Mr Patersonmoved to Kaikōura 18 monthsago with the intention of retiring. But the opportunity to workwith local youth was too good to refuse. Ms McMillan said having the MTFJ programme as part of Te Hā o Mātauranga (Kaikōura Education Trust), based in Ludstone Road, meant it provided aonestop shopfor supportinglocalyouth. Driving lessons, counselling, youth groups and education programmeswereall offered fromthe one building. Kaikōura MayorCraig Macklesaid he wouldlike Parliament to comeupwith a crossparty agreement to ensure the MTFJ programme’s longevity. ‘‘At the moment we can only offer 12 monthcontracts, but this is aprogramme whichhas proven it works.’’ He would alsolike the funding model to offermore flexibility to allow neighbouring councils likeHurunui,Kaikōura and Waimakariri to worktogether. ‘‘There is an allocationoffundingfor each district, but if say we could only place 40 people and Hurunui needs more funding because it canplace 60 people, weshould be able to pass it on.’’ Public interest journalismfunded through New Zealand on Air.
