It has 10 to <strong>12</strong> regular members, with its two lady umpires, Alyson Shipley and Vibhuti Patel, in only her secondyear of umpiring, being recognised at New Zealand level. They havebeen named on the New Zealand Aspiring Female Umpirespanel for the coming season, and attended a training camp at Lincoln last weekend. ReganDalleyhas beenappointed to umpire at the New Zealand Under 19 Men’stournament at Lincoln in December, as well as at two matches between the <strong>Canterbury</strong> Magicians and the Auckland Heartsinthe Hallyburton Johnston National Women’s competition. Holly,aged20, says whilethe prospect of seeingalion is daunting,the team has prepared well forthe race. TheExpeditionAfrica – Kouga adventure race is being held in theEastern Caperegion of South Africa, from <strong>October</strong> 16 to 29. It is partofthe <strong>2023</strong> AdventureRacing World Championships. The700km long race will be theculmination of theworld series, whichunites in competition theworld’s best endurance athletes to premier expedition adventure races aroundthe world. Holly saysthe race will be held in abarren hinterland of theprovince nearCapeSt. Francis,about 750kmseast of Cape Town. ‘‘Therewill be alot of mountainbiking,kayaking and hikingupand downsome serious mountains,’’ she says. Thetop teamsare expected to finish withinfivedays, but all teams haveamaximum of 10 days to complete the race. Holly followedher father PaulSparks into adventureracing after travelling with hissupportcrew at an early age. ‘‘Dadhas donefive Godzones, andheaps of other races and I gotthe bug from him.’’ Shestarted aracing team at St Andrews College,and has completedtwo Godzones.She hascompleted several Coast to Coast races,even partnering with aBondiRescue TV star on thetwodayevent. ‘‘Racing is a lotoffun and yousee some amazing country.When the Godzonewas cancelled, the team decidedtocompete in South Africa.
