A word from the Principal...
Dear Families,
It seems like we have only just begun this academic year and yet, here we are at the end of the first half
term. Starting a new year can be a really big change for many children, with new adults to form relationships
with as well as new academic expectations and a different classroom. However, all children have settled in
really well to their new classes and they are all well set to make the most of the rest of the year.
Since the pandemic, attendance has been a focus for all schools across the country as it is considerably lower
than before COVID. Our aim is for attendance across the school to be 96%, which would be broadly in line
with pre-pandemic standards. So far this year, our attendance has shown significant improvements from
22/23 and currently sits at 95.3%, so we are almost at target. We appreciate that children will undoubtedly
have bouts of illness that mean they are not absent from school, but please continue to try to avoid booking
holidays in term time. Thank you.
Thank you to the FLS for organising and running our discos this week. The children had a great time as
always! I’d also like to thank all of the volunteers who helped Claire and the team, it was brilliant to see so
many people giving up their time to provide this opportunity for the children.
We will be hosting a tour of the school for parents with children starting school in September 24. The tour
will take place on the 7th November at 0930 and it would be greatly appreciated if you could share this with
anyone you know who may be interested.
Kind regards,
Mr Adam Anderson
Principal

Dinners
Please ensure you book your child’s dinner option online every day, including
packed lunch. This can be done in advance for the whole term, but the
daily deadline is midnight the night before. You will be asked to provide a
packed lunch if your child’s dinner has not been
pre-booked online. Thank you.
Mental Health...
Mental Health
We recognised World Mental Health Day on 10th October.
We have been really proud of the children’s mature attitude to this.
We were particularly impressed with their definition of what mental health is.
Positive mental health enables you to deal with challenges, have a go at new things, make
friends and communicate effectively, be open-minded, feel good about yourself and lead a
happy life.
This term each class will be having an age-appropriate session with an
Educational Mental Health Practitioner.
They will be exploring in more detail what mental health is and
how they can achieve good mental health.
The classes that have already had the sessions have found them useful and have some
strategies they can use to help them when they feel negative emotions.
There are some great resources online that you can use at home to support conversations
around mental health and issues that might affect mental health.
Here are some that come highly recommended:
HOCKEY
The Ludgvan Lightning Hockey Team competed in the first round of the Penwith Primary
Hockey League on Thursday. All of the players worked as a solid team during 4 ten-minute
matches to secure well deserved victories. Ludgvan finished just behind the league
leaders on the day and can be proud of their performance - going into round two already in
2nd place!
Ludgvan Lightning 1 - 0 St. Ives Strikers
Ludgvan Lightning 1- 0 St. Buryan Choughs
Ludgvan Lightning 1 - 0 Gulval Rocks
Ludgvan Lightning 0 - 3 Gulval Lions
CROSS COUNTRY
On Tuesday 10th October, a team of cross country runners attended the first event of the
year and cross country season at Mounts Bay Academy. The children took part in their age
groups and each race had at least 50 children from across Penwith in it. Our children did
extremely well in this event and we had 90% of the team coming in the top 20 race positions
for their age groups. A huge well done to Walter who led the Year 4 race all the way around,
but was just overtaken at the last second, leaving him in silver medal position! A similar thing
happened to Kai (who wasn’t in the event until lunch time that day), who should have come
3rd, but slowed down at the finish line thinking he was done!
This was the first event both boys have taken part in for cross country. With a bit of
practise, we will get them across the finish line in the position they deserve. Great effort!
I was so impressed with all of the children and the positions they came, but mostly how they
cheered each other on and how they supported friends from other schools by cheering them
on too.
Well done to Evie W, Siena, Milo, Freddie, Walter, Elmer, Alfie, Ivy, Elowyn, Kai, Harry K,
Maison, and Sennen.

EYFS
EYFS have been busy exploring Autumn, enjoying some new books and being creative. They
have settled into school life well and are now confident in navigating the school.
The children have been exploring ‘Leaf Man’ this week. They have used leaves and other
natural objects to create collages. They have also been using primary colours to make
autumnal colours. Lots of the children have also collected leaves and made their own leaf
people to go on adventures. The children have created simple maps, showing where their leaf
people have been, including over mountains, oceans and fields!
In Maths, the children have been learning how to subitise up to three. They were challenged
to spot groups of three objects and have been collecting things. They have also been
exploring capacity, using different containers in the water tray.
The children have continued to impress the staff in phonics and have now covered all of the
single letter sounds. Fred has been very cheeky though, sneaking around school, causing
mischief and then telling us all about his adventures!
In Drawing Club, the children have expanded their vocabulary and have been using some
very impressive words such as accelerate, hazard and chomp to name just a few! The secret
codes have been very funny and have meant our pictures have come alive.

Year 1
Well done Year 1. We have had a very busy few weeks. As part of our PSHE focus, we are
continuing to learn to work together. The children have created some amazing structures and
towers. After listening to the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff, the children made bridges
using a selection of different resources.
In science the children were set a challenge to make an umbrella for our class bear.
They conducted experiments to determine which materials were the most suitable to use.
The children have also been learning to log onto the chrome books and play simple maths
games.
A big thank you to Lucus’ mum, who taught the children all about the mid-Autumn festival.
They listened to a story, made lanterns and paraded with them.

Year 2
Year 2 have continued to thrive in their first term of Year 2. We are really impressed with the
children’s transition into the classroom and are so happy to see them getting more
comfortable in their routine.
In English, the children have been improving their handwriting. They have been loving the
warm up activities! We’ve been working on holding a pencil properly, sitting in the right
position and forming their letters accurately. We’ve also been writing sentences using full
stops, capital letters, finger spaces and question marks. The children are amazing at writing
in the past tense and have created super diary entries.
In maths, we have started looking at addition and subtraction. The pupils have been learning
their number bonds up to 10 and we are starting to explore up to 20!

Year 3
Year 3 have been focusing on Art this half term and have looked at local and worldwide
famous artists. We have been learning about Alfred Wallis, Glyn Macey, Kit Johns and Vincent
Van Gogh. The children have compared the work of the artists and have noted similarities and
differences in their work. They have then recreated their art work and have created some of
their own landscape drawings and paintings. The children have enjoyed walking around the
class ‘gallery’ stating what they like about each other’s pictures. The children have really
enjoyed their art sessions and have created some great pieces of artwork.
In English we have been learning about Acrostic poems and have used our new knowledge of
adverbs, alliteration and similes to write our own poems. We then performed these to the rest
of the class and shared them with children in Year 5.
In PSHE we have been learning about different ways to communicate with others, talking
about people we can trust and celebrating differences within people. The children enjoyed
learning some sign language in class and they really enjoyed watching a performance at the
Community Centre by a group called Arthur’s Club, who told us three stories all using sign
language.
This week was also our last gymnastics session at Penzance Gym club and we finally got to
have lots of fun in the foam pit! Thank you to Penzance Gymnastics Club for supporting us
and the use of your equipment.

Year 4
What an amazing first half term for Class 4! They have all been working so hard, trying their
best in everything they do. They have loved drawing in Art; massively improving their skills
as well as creating so many incredible pieces of art. I have been so impressed with their
skills, knowledge and talent.
In Geography, they made 3D versions of the earth’s structures and volcanoes, focusing on the
different elements. It was remarkable to see how much they had learned and remembered
from their 2D drawing and lessons.
The children have created brilliant picture story plans in English, where they thought about
the structure of their stories.
We have come to the end of the tennis sessions that have been delivered through the
generous support and provision from Penzance tennis club. The children deserve a rest now.
I hope they all have a lovely half term.

Year 5
Class 5 have been working hard writing non-chronological reports about Cornwall. They have
included many new tricky language devices including semi colons, embedded relative clauses
and subordinate clauses. It has been a pleasure to read such interesting reports about our
wonderful county! We have especially enjoyed reading the children’s paragraphs about pasties
and the great “jam first or cream?” debate!
We also completed our Art unit all about drawing this week. Throughout the term, we have
learnt to create texture in drawings, shade and create shadows using a variety of pencil
grades. It was amazing to see the final pieces of artwork created by the whole class. The
quality of their drawings was fantastic, and they showed off all the skills they have learnt over
the past few weeks.
Year 5 have also been enjoying their learning about forces in Science. We have learnt about
Sir Isaac Newton and how he discovered gravity. To test out different forces, the class made
their own tissue paper parachutes to explore the impact of air resistance. They also made
their own paper rockets to explore the impact of shooting them from varying angles. It has
been great to see so much scientific discussion happening during these experiments.
Finally, in Maths Year 5 have completed their learning on addition and subtraction. We learnt
to use the column method to complete some very tricky calculations. We also looked at
multi-step problems and how to pick out key pieces of information from word problems to
help us solve them. We were so impressed by the mathematical skills we have seen during
our Maths lessons.
Broad and Balanced...
Year 6
Year 6 have been continuing our Black History topic during October, and we have read
several recent inspirational speeches, which gave us a great understanding of the impact and
techniques used within Martin Luther King Jr’s famous, “I have a dream,” speech. We read
dissected aspects of their powerful phrases such as the use of hyperboles, modal verbs and
repetition, to be impactful and emotive.
We then began to draft ideas for our own inspirational speeches in order to change an aspect
of Ludgvan school for the better. Ideas represented by year 6 were: toilet facility renovation,
longer break times and even no homework! We plan to deliver our inspirational speeches to
Mr Anderson once they are completed.
Our Art unit for this term was to develop our drawing skills, focusing on tonal shading, cross
hatching, contour shading and perspective drawing using 1-point perspective, which was
developed by an Italian artist, Filppo Brunelleschi. We explored the use of horizontal,
vertical and diagonal lines to create a sense of depth to our 2-dimensional page. Some of our
art work was absolutely amazing.
During RE, Year 6 have learnt about Hinduism; particularly exploring the terms, karma,
dharma, atma, Moksha and Brahma. We have drawn a cycle of reincarnation which
demonstrates the birth, death and rebirth cycle in Hindu belief, and also created a board
game, based on snakes and ladders, but with a Hindu twist. Many of the deities and customs
were implemented into our games and they were extremely fun to play.
In Maths, our focus has been based on the four operations. We have refined our skills in
multiplying/dividing by 10, 100 and 1000, used short and long multiplication whilst focusing
on the importance of place value and we have also explored the use of squared and cubed
numbers.
