A word from the Principal...
Dear families,
Welcome to the first newsletetr of 2023 and Happy New Year to you all.
It has been great to welcome everyone back to school following an enjoyable Christmas break.
Even better news is that we seem to be over the worst of the latest bout of illnesses that swept
through the school prior to Christmas and the attendance of staff and children has now returned
to normal. On that note, can I please reiterate the importance of your child arriving in school on
time as we have a number of children arriving late in the morning. Not only does this result in lost
learning time, but it is also be very hard for children to enter the classroom once everyone else has
settled and has a negative impact on the rest of the class when their learning is disrupted.
As we move into the Spring Term, hopefully the weather will begin to improve, which will allow us
to take more of our learning into the local environment, go out on a range of trips and residentials
and enjoy our forest and farm school experiences without the need for hats, wellies and waterproofs!
If you have not done so already, please ensure your child has signed up to the after-school clubs
they would like to attend. We are currently running 30 clubs a week, which is amazing for a school
of our size and would like to thank our staff team for giving up their time to run these clubs at
lunchtimes and afterschool.
Kind regards,
Mr Adam Anderson
Principal

Special Educational Needs & Disabilities Parent Coffee Morning
At 9am on Monday 23rd January, we will be holding a coffee morning for parents of
children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. The purpose of this meeting
will be for parents to meet each other and form connections with other parents
of children with additional needs. Our school’s SENDCo (Special Educational Needs
and Disabilities Coordinator), Sophie Law, will also be there in case you would like to
touch base or ask any questions. There will also be some external professionals in attendance
to share their expertise and provide support or information about external
support that is available to you.
We would love to see as many parents as possible in attendance. Your child does not
need to have a diagnosis of an additional need, anyone is welcome to come along.
This will be a very informal meeting, a chance to form connections with others as
well as to have a catch up and support each other. If you are unable to attend this
date and time, we will be having more of these coffee mornings (once a term), so
that you can hopefully attend future meetings instead. There will be tea, coffee and
cake available so please pop in and say hello as well as having a drink and something
to eat.
Oracy Challenge
Odd One Out: Begin by naming three items – two that are connected in some way and one
that is not (you can make this as easy or as hard as you wish, depending upon the age and
interests of your children) and ask your children to choose the odd one out. For example with
“train, bus, hair” it is easy to identify the odd one out. “Platypus, cobra, horse” is more challenging.
“Chop, chicken, ship” focuses the game on identifying different sounds. “21, 63, 78”
turns it into a math challenge. Have fun!
Outdoor Learning...
Outdoor Learning has begun this term focusing on safe tool use. The children
have had the opportunity to learn and refine their skills using saws and
hammers and explore different uses for these tools. It’s been great to see the
amazing levels of creativity of our pupils.

EYFS
This week, EYFS started investigating our new question ‘Do you know how
wonderful our world is?’. The children have been exploring different habitats
and made some exciting discoveries in our outdoor area! Slugs, snails and
worms were amongst the creatures we found and some of the children made
habitats. We also learnt about the rainforest, exploring the weather and some
of the animals that live there. The children talked about why trees are important
and even made a rainforest outside, filling the trees with animals that can
be found there.

The children have all settled in after the Christmas break. They were very excited
to tell us about the lovely things they had been doing over the holidays.
On the first day back the children all designed and made their own kites. They
had great fun flying them.
We have started our new topic ‘How far can we travel?’ This half term our focus
is in the 7 continents. We have looked at Antarctica and Africa. The children
were amazed to learn that nobody lives permanently in Antarctica and it is actually
classed as a desert!
This week we had to locate Kenya on a map, and we discovered that there are
many different languages in Kenya because there are lots of different groups
of people who live there. We looked at the different wild animals you can find
in Africa and used this as our art focus. They explored mixing different colours
together to form the background. They then added a silhouette of an African
animal. They also made Savannah collages using cut and torn pieces of paper.
We made African patterns and beaded necklaces. They then learnt an African
‘call and response’ song called ‘Che Che Kule’.

Year 2 have had a great two weeks back after Christmas. We enjoyed hearing
about all of the fun things that they got up to over the break. We have
launched our new class topic, all about space. The whole class have thoroughly
enjoyed exploring our new space station and dressing up as astronauts. We
have also been impressed by how much knowledge they already have about
the solar system. Last week, we had a Maths challenge to complete a tower
building game using ‘more’ and ‘less’ than, which we had previously learnt
about in Maths. The game got very competitive and we saw a range of towers
by the end of the game, some only ending up with one cube by the end. Lots
of the class also chose to recap their numbers to 100 as well as writing some
words that are tricky to spell. It has been great to see them all being so independent
and wanting to complete extra challenges in class. Well done Year 2!

Year 3 have had a great start to 2023 and have all come back to school with
positive attitudes towards their learning. They have enjoyed starting their new
topic, The Stone Age and have already learnt quite a bit! So far they have focused
on identifying how we know about the Stone Age and what evidence we
have to suggest what life was like back then. They created a timeline to understand
how long ago the Stone Age was. The children have analysed some cave
paintings and have discussed how people lived back then and which animals
were around. They had great fun creating some cave art of their own. Their
English work has been linked to the text, Stone Age Boy and the children have
been role playing parts of the story and creating diary entries and comic strips
to understand the text in more detail. They are really excited by this topic and
can’t wait to learn more!
Well done Year 3.

Class 4 has had a very busy couple of weeks. In maths, they’ve been learning
about factors; their timetables knowledge really supported them in these processes.
The children have started to learn about diary entries and have analysed
text for key features. They will go on to write their diary entries based
around a mythological person from Ancient Greek times. In history, they’ve
started to learn about Ancient Greece. Class 4 have been invited to be a part of
the ‘ Leading Edge dance/music project where they will get to have specialist
music and dance lessons by a Mounts Bay Academy member of staff. They will
be creating performances alongside other schools in the trust then performing
these to parents in the Summer Term. They had their first session yesterday
where they created their own creature and music.

Class 5 have had a busy two weeks back at school! In Art and Design, we have
been practising new skills including monoblock printing, tie dye and stitching.
We are excited to be putting our new skills to the test next week to create lavender
pillows.
We have also been very lucky to have the Pirates Rugby Club come into school
to teach us to play rugby. We were really impressed with the children’s teamwork
and perseverance with new skills. In Geography, we have been exploring
the water cycle - the children created their own versions that we will be observing
throughout the week.
In Science, we have been discovering more about our solar system and the
Earth’s revolution and rotation (including taking turns practising the Earth’s
orbit!).
Well done for a brilliant start to 2023, Class 5! Your attitude towards your
learning has been fantastic!

Year 6 have been learning about inherited features, and adaptation/ natural
selection within science. We have explored how any living creature develops
characteristics that are handed down by their parents/ grandparents, and developed
an understanding that some features are developed through environmental
factors such as lifestyles, financial circumstances and learnt behaviours.
Year 6’s had chosen 2 characters from Mr Men and predicted what features
they might pass down to their children (inherited features). We then explored
the features of specific animals and how natural selection and adaptation has
changed these features over time.
We have also begun looking through parts of Anne Frank’s diary, which was
written during a 2-year period in WW2. We will be creating our own diary entries
based on the features identified within Anne Frank’s extracts.
