Book club
Thrills and chills for our November book club
A group of social media influencers have been invited to the opening of Jagged
Island ... a private amusement park for the very rich, and the very influential.
Posting every second of their VIP treatment, the group is super impressed.
The schedule is jam-packed, with just one thing missing ... getting off the
island alive. Author of The Island Natasha Preston has been scaring readers
for years with her thrillers ... this one is just as creepy. Penguin Random House
• Three teenage girls go to a party. Only two go home ... and they later confess to
murdering their friend. But in the area where the girl went missing, hikers find
the word LIAR scrawled in blood on a tree. Are the girls lying? And if so, why?
Inspired by various true crime cases, All the Little Liars by Victoria Selman
keeps you guessing, and has a wicked twist! Quercus
Masottina Prosecco Collection 96 gets its name from the
outstanding award of 96 points given to the Prosecco DOC Brut by
Decanter magazine. This Brut prosecco is imported from a
third-generation vineyard in Italy by Spirits and Bubbles ... and is
perfect to toast to great friends and excellent reads at your next
book club evening. You can buy it online from whiskybrother.com,
A young man, working for the US
Marshals creating fake histories for
people in witness protection, has
the chance to find his father, who’s
been in witness protection for years.
But not without danger from his
father’s enemies. Lindwood Barclay’s
latest thriller, The Lie Maker, is as
suspenseful as you can get. HQ
JD Robb’s Eve Dallas (love her) is back
- this time investigating the death of
a retired police officer. It appears he’s
committed suicide, but Eve thinks
not. And is Eve ever wrong? Set in
2061, Payback in Death is the 57th
In Death thriller ... and they keep just
getting better. If you haven’t read one,
now’s a great time to start. Piatkus
Chief Superintendent William Warkwick
has, for years, been in charge of
making sure the annual transport of
the Crown Jewels across London goes
according to plan. But this year, things
are about to change. A master criminal
is planning the most outrageous theft
in history in Jeffrey Archer’s
Traitors Gate. HarperCollins Publishers
Abigail is The Good Daughter, a
member of the New American Baptist
Church. Living miles from anywhere,
she’s a valued member of the
community. She’s also the sole survivor
of a fire that burns down the family
home. Was the outside world really a
threat, or did danger lurk inside the
community? A gripping thriller from
Laure van Rensburg. Michael Joseph
Welcome to paradise. We hope you
survive your stay. That says it all, really.
A scuba diving instructor. A world
famous party island in Thailand.
And someone who’s making sure
backpackers never leave ... one
murder at a time. Sara Ochs’ The Dive
is a fabulously thrilling read ... but isn’t
for you if you’ve planned an island
holiday this December. Penguin
Everything’s Fine caused a bit of
a stir on BookTok. A love story, yes,
but so much more. In college, Jess is
almost always the only black woman
in her class. Josh is the entitled guy in
chinos. When they end up working at
the same investment bank, all sorts of
sparks fly. The question ... is it ethical
to date someone who goes against
everything you believe in? Picador
I hope to make an impact on education,
technology and entrepreneurship.
ubbly and driven,
Janice exudes positive
energy. Although she is
a qualified accountant,
her career path has taken
her to some unexpected
places. “Accounting didn’t really suit
my personality,” she laughs. “I’m a
people person.”
While studying for her degree, she
started doing part-time tutoring at
local schools. She has since worked in
accounting, IT training and recruiting,
but having fallen in love with
teaching, she decided to study her
post-graduate certificate in education,
which she completed last year.
Passionate about education and what
it can do for people, she would love
to study further in the field. “Education
gives you power, but you must use it,”
she says.
Janice is the owner of her own
recruitment business, which against
all odds she started during the
Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. But
what really keeps her motivated is
her community work. She recently
launched an NPO called Miriam’s
Mission, which was inspired by
her late grandmother Miriam. “My
grandmother was always giving,” she
says. “She was really committed to
helping the community.”
Janice reminisces about how she
used to join her granny in making
meals for those in need, and says
that this generous and genuine
spirit really impacted and
inspired her. Last year marked 10
years since Miriam passed away
from breast cancer, and Janice
felt it fitting to launch the NPO in
her memory. “I hope to make an
impact on education, technology
and entrepreneurship,” she explains. “I
saw what education did for me in my
life. It opens more opportunities and
changes your mindset. It’s something
that can’t be taken away from you
once you have it.”
Besides running her own business and
building Miriam’s Mission, Janice is also
currently working on a programme for
young entrepreneurs called Futurepreneurs.
The programme, which will
launch early next year, is designed to
teach business skills to children. She
also works as a motivational speaker
and loves to share her experiences and
ideas with others. For her, positivity is
everything. “If you want to be
successful, it starts in the mind. If you
can envision it, you make it a reality.
You are a co-creator of your reality,” she
says. “Surround yourself with people
who are positive; and don’t be afraid.”
A WHOLE
NEW WORLD
Noluthando Ngema was recently
announced as the Nando’s Emerging Artist
of the Year at the Basadi in Music Awards
(BIMA) and she’s buzzing with excitement
as she begins her career.
or Noluthando, working as a musician is an
opportunity to be her authentic self. There is nothing
she loves more than creating music and she feels truly
blessed to have the opportunity to learn and grow in
the industry. But, although she loved singing in choirs
and performing on stage at school, she didn’t formally train
as a musician.
Noluthando and her family moved to Ballito from
Mpumalanga when she was just 10 years old and she says
she immediately fell in love with the ocean. She went to
Umhlali Primary School before beginning her high school
career at Durban Girls’ College. It was there that she joined
the choir and discovered a real passion for music. “The choir
there was incredible,” she says. “I remember performing at
the Durban Playhouse with the philharmonic orchestra and
thinking, this is everything!”
After a year, she moved to Our Lady of Fatima in Durban
North where she continued to sing and perform. “I loved my
time there. I joined the choir, and I loved drama. I felt like I
was becoming more and more myself,” she says.
But when she moved to Cape Town to study physiotherapy,
Noluthando struggled with her choice of qualification, as
well as the realisation that our healthcare system has some
very real problems. “I found myself deconstructing a lot
of things that I thought were true. In the health system,
I experienced eye opening exposure to structures that
are still very much affected by something that happened
30 years ago. Seeing how people’s lives are so tangibly
affected by it still was so heart wrenching,” she explains. She
spent a lot of time grappling with questions surrounding
her purpose and identity and says she found herself really
clinging to her music and faith during this time.
While at UCT, she joined a student band and began to learn
about the real skill involved with music -how songs are
written and composed, what makes a good performance
and when to let other people lead. She wanted to give
up her studies, but having promised her family she would
complete her degree and community service, she stuck to
it. After qualifying, she moved back to KZN and finally late
last year, she had the opportunity to go and audition in the
United States. The experience taught her about performing
at a professional level, as well as about the practicalities of
the industry. And then, in May this year, Noluthando’s sister
sent her a link to the Basadi in Music Awards. A month later,
she was shortlisted as one of the top five, and in August was
announced as the New Emerging Artist of the Year.
The prize includes a bursary to study music at Bridges
Academy, a mentorship programme with Msaki (one of
Noluthando's favourite artists), beauty and wardrobe
consultations, and the chance to record an album and
perform with other artists. “I hope this opportunity will allow
me to connect with people and to start my career off well,”
she says. “I trust that it will yield fruit that is good, not just for
me but for those around me as well. And to help heal.”
Noluthando describes her music style as ‘native’. “It calls back
to the soul, into a space that we were created to be,” she
says. She writes all her own music, and says this process has
really helped her with her own personal journey. “Music is
my best way of serving,” she says. “I want to use it to connect
with others. People can use music to process their own
circumstances and hearts.”
She says she truly loves what she does now, and entering the
world of music has turned her life around. “I know what it’s like to
wake up every day not happy with what you do. My core value
is empathy, so to do a job that allows me to show that side in
truth is amazing. I’ve found a space where I can be myself.”
Dancing with
purpose
Professional dancer, university student and newly-crowned Miss Ballito,
Shaye Caldicott balances the facets of her life with grace.
Text: JENNIFER CAMPBELL Photograph: barry bowditch
On a beautiful spring evening at
Collisheen Estate, Shaye was crowned
Miss Ballito 2023. Watching her
exude confidence on stage, it’s hard
to believe that she was hesitant to
enter the competition when Karen
Landman, one of the pageant
coordinators, suggested it to her. “I
had never done anything related to
pageants before and I didn’t really
know what I was walking into,” she
says. “But I had nothing to lose.”
Shaye says the experience was deeply
rewarding, mostly because of the
friends she made along the way.
The women really got to know each
other throughout the course of the
programme and were a source of
support for each other. “With Miss
Ballito, I finally had a group of girls that
I could talk to,” she says. “I didn’t realise
how important it is to have a support
system and to have people you can
turn to.”
As a dancer, Shaye is no stranger to
the stage but she says that even so,
she gained confidence through the
training she received as part of the
Miss Ballito programme. “I also learnt
that it is ok to make mistakes. It’s ok
to not reach your personal goals
or go through things that you’re
embarrassed about,” she says. “I got
to speak through all these things
with the girls. It was really helpful
and healing. And it didn’t really even
feel like a competition. We had dress
fittings, we went for coffees, and just
did things together.”
As part of the programme, all the
finalists have been working on a
community project of their choice,
20 Get It Ballito•Umdloti•Umhlanga November 23

and as the winner Shaye will continue this work for the
duration of her reign. Her chosen project is called Dance
for a Difference, which runs at Game Changers School, an
NPO that operates at Freedom House Church in Umhlali.
She teaches dance to foundation phase children whose
families can’t afford extramural activities, and is working
towards a show in which they will be able to perform
at the Pumpkin Theatre. “My first experience on stage
changed my confidence forever and I really want them to
experience that,” she says. “Just because they don’t have
everything that everyone else has, doesn’t mean they
shouldn’t have these opportunities.”
Dance holds a special place in Shaye’s heart and she has
been doing it since she was a child. “The first time I was on
stage I was wearing a little red tutu and doing a ballet solo,”
she reminisces. “It changed my life. Although I was dancing
for around 500 people, I felt like I was dancing for myself.”
But there is more to dancing than the performance – it
was always, and continues to be, a form of escape for
Shaye. After her parents divorced a few years ago, she
struggled with some serious family issues.
My first experience on stage
changed my confidence forever.
“There was always so much going on at home, but
dancing has always been a beautiful escape,” she admits.
Eager to leave behind a difficult situation that involved
alcohol and drug abuse, Shea left home at the age of
17 and has supported herself ever since. Her advice to
other young people in difficult situations is to ask for
help. "If things are really bad in your household and you
don’t know what to do, don’t be afraid to talk to people,”
she advises. “I kept quiet for many years and when I
finally learnt to speak to my dad’s closest friends and my
godparents, they became aware of what was happening.
Whenever I didn’t feel safe in my house, I just had to pick
up the phone and they would come and get me. You
must protect yourself and your mental health.”
Shaye has worked hard to make it on her own and
encourages others to believe that it’s possible for things
to get better. “I had a vision that I would live by myself and
look after myself. I didn’t know how I was going to get there,
but it was the light at the end of the tunnel,” she says.
When she’s not dancing or studying for her degree (a
BCom in entrepreneurship), Shaye spends time sewing
her own clothes. One of her dreams for the future is to
start her own environmentally-friendly fashion brand. She
is a proud ambassador for the community, but even with
the winning title to her name, she remains humble. “Even
though I won Miss Ballito, I am so proud of every one of
the girls. I have seen them grow in ways I couldn’t even
imagine. You don’t need a crown and a sash for that.”
STAND TOGETHER
The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign takes
place annually from 25 November to 10 December. We chatted to Josha Daniel, the
founder of Rise Up Movement, about the work that he does.
Text: JENNIFER CAMPBELL
It takes someone special to dedicate
their life to making the world a safer
place. In our community, that person is
Josha Daniel. 20 years ago, he started
Rise Up Movement, an NPO that has
since grown into a movement that
works tirelessly to address poverty,
gender-based violence, human
trafficking and child abuse. Two
decades later, Josha remains at its
helm, and despite seeing some of
the worst behaviours of our society,
he remains completely committed to
helping others.
Josha grew up in Chatsworth in a
home deeply affected by genderbased
violence and alcoholism.
“My mom stayed in her marriage
because she had no assistance,” he
explains. “I saw and experienced
emotional trauma.”
Josha leans heavily on empathy in his
work today. “It’s easy to tell a woman
to leave an abusive man, but it’s not
that simple,” he says. Determined to
lead an honourable life, Josh worked
hard to change his circumstances.
“Your situation doesn’t determine your
future – it’s your mindset,” he says. “With
the little we had, I tried to make do.” He
managed to finish his studies and in
2003, got his first teaching post.
While teaching maths and physics at
high school level, he started Rise Up
Movement. In the early days, Josha
began by supplying school children
with stationery and food for lunch,
which he paid for with his own salary.
As a teacher, he always tried to teach life
skills to his students. “You can have very
little in life, but if you have moral values
and a good character, that will take you
somewhere,” he says. From there, this
work grew to a point where Rise Up
Movement required more time and in
2015, Josha left teaching to commit
himself completely to the cause.
Josha says because there was no help
available for his mom and others, the
Rise Up Movement safe house, which
is currently being worked on, is his
biggest priority. “There is currently no
facility like this on the North Coast,” he
explains. “We’ve been allocated land,
but are facing a challenge of funding.
We appeal to community members for
help.” Besides providing a safe location
for victims of abuse, Josha says the aim
of the project is to give these women
their dignity back. The safe house will
give women access to an on-site facility
where rape swabs and DNA testing
can take place, as well as the chance to
choose their own clothes and makeup.
“We understand that every person
is different. We want to help women
through the process,” he says.
Josha and the team at Rise Up
Movement, many of whom are
volunteers, work hard on awareness
campaigns, as well as skills
development, education workshops,
support and counselling. “We have
an awesome team at Umhlali SAPS
that partner with us,” says Josha.
He encourages others to become
involved wherevers they can. “Safety
is a shared responsibility. If you see
something, say something. Get
proactive. Get involved with your
community – know your people.”
For this year’s 16 days of activism,
the Rise Up Movement will be
running workshops at faith-based
organisations about gender-based
violence and what to do in the case of
crisis.; as well as silent demonstrations,
flyer distribution and other
community engagements. Josha is
also working on launching a 24-hour
call centre where people can speak
to trained counsellors. “With the
festive season approaching, we
just want to ensure the safety
of our community,” he says. “I believe
that the Dolphin Coast is the jewel of
South Africa. We have phenomenal
security companies, neighbourhood
watches and community businesses
that are ready to help. That creates
peace of mind.”
It’s difficult to see people struggling
with abuse, but Josha simply can’t walk
away from his work. “There’ve been
times I’ve thought about throwing
in the towel, but this is the choice I
made,” he says. “You don’t have to be a
politician to make a difference. Start at
home. Check on people, ask if they’re
ok. Small acts of kindness can help
build our community.”
Get Glowing
Ballito-based makeup artist and content creator Priyanka Moodley lets us in
on her top tips for a beautiful summer…
hether you're hitting the
beach or attending a
summer party, here’s how to
achieve an on-trend look and
keep your makeup fresh in the heat…
1.
LIGHTEN UP YOUR BASE
Swap out heavy foundations for
lighter alternatives such as tinted
moisturisers or BB creams. These
products provide coverage while
allowing your skin to breathe and
preventing clogged pores. Opt for
formulas with SPF to protect your skin
from harmful UV rays.
MEET THE ARTIST
Priyanka decided to pursue her love for beauty and has worked as a makeup
artist for the past four years. She has also been sharing her expertise as a beauty
and lifestyle content creator for the last seven years. Through her social media
platforms and online presence, she has built a loyal following who appreciates
her unique approach to makeup. “I strive to inspire others through my content
by providing tips, tutorials and product recommendations that help individuals
enhance their natural beauty,” she says. “I am passionate about empowering
others to feel confident and beautiful through the transformative power of
makeup.”
2.
EMBRACE YOUR NATURAL GLOW
During summer, embrace your natural
radiance by using highlighters and
illuminators. Apply them to the
high points of your face, such as the
cheekbones, brow bones, and the
bridge of your nose. This will give you
a healthy and sun-kissed glow.
24 Get It Ballito•Umdloti•Umhlanga November 23

3.
WATERPROOF YOUR MAKEUP
To prevent your makeup from
melting off in the summer
heat, opt for waterproof or
long-lasting formulas. Look for
waterproof mascaras, eyeliners
and eyeshadows to ensure your
eye makeup stays intact even
on the hottest days.
GO FOR VIBRANT LIPS
Summer is the perfect time
to experiment with bold and
vibrant lip colours. Try shades
like coral, pink, or bright red to
complement your sun-kissed
skin. Choose long-wearing
formulas or lip stains to ensure
the colour lasts throughout the
day.
4.
5.
KEEP IT MINIMAL
Summer is all about
embracing a more natural and
effortless look. Avoid heavy
contouring and opt for a more
minimalistic approach. Let
your skin breathe and focus
on enhancing your features
with light blush and bronzer
for a fresh-faced appearance.
SET YOUR MAKEUP
To ensure your makeup stays in
place throughout the day, set it
with a lightweight setting spray.
This will help control shine and
keep your makeup looking fresh
and dewy.
6.
7.
PROTECT YOUR SKIN
Remember to always prioritise
skincare during the summer
months. Apply a broadspectrum
sunscreen with at
least SPF 30 before applying any
makeup. This will protect your
skin from harmful UV rays and
prevent sun damage.

Here comes the SUN
Beach season is upon us and we’re ready for it! Camelot Spa in Umhlanga invited us to try
some treatments that are designed to exfoliate and hydrate the skin in time for summer.
Camelot Spa, located in Pearls Mall in Umhlanga, is set
just up from the beach, so when we were welcomed to
the relaxation room, we were greeted with a gorgeous
view and a fresh sea breeze. After a cup of detox tea
and a little time to unwind, our therapist Nelli showed
us to a private room to begin a Salt Glow body scrub, a
treatment that is designed to thoroughly exfoliate the
skin. By getting rid of dead skin cells that often build
up, the skin is able to absorb moisture better and really
hold onto hydration. The scrubbing process also helps
to unblock pores and leaves the skin feeling smoother
and more even. Nelli used a natural salt scrub enriched
with coconut oil, which felt (and smelt) amazing.
After the body scrub, it was time for a hydrating
wrap. First, Nelli applied a rich formula of sweet
almond and fruit oils before wrapping us up in
a plastic sheet and warm blanket and leaving us
to relax for 20 minutes. This wrapping process,
along with the heat of the blanket, cause sweating
throughout the relaxation period, drawing
toxins from the body. Thanks to the mineral-rich,
moisturising wrap, the skin is left feeling revitalised
and deeply nourished. After 20 minutes, the
wrapping materials are removed and rinsed. After
a shower, the effect of the treatment was clear –
noticeably smoother, softer skin. To complete the
experience, we were treated to a Swedish massage,
which certainly got rid of any remaining stress.
According to the team at Camelot, the body scrubs and
hydrating wraps are proving very popular, especially in
the summer months, and it’s easy to see why. The spa
also offers a range of other body treatments, including
massage therapy and hydrotherapy.
Myths about
Aesthetic medicine
Non-surgical beauty treatments are becoming more and more popular for their
ability to achieve a natural look with little downtime. Even so, there are a lot of
misconceptions surrounding aesthetic medicine. Dr Shameera Nowbuth of The
Dermal Studio in Umhlanga helps us debunk some of the most common myths.
2. Aesthetic treatments are dangerous
It is important to understand that when it comes to
injectable treatments, there is always some degree of risk
involved. For this reason, it’s essential that you let your
doctor know about your medical history, and to raise
any questions or concerns before you go ahead with a
treatment.
3. Aesthetic treatments are painful
If you’re concerned about what your treatment will feel like,
Dr Nowbuth says there really is nothing to be worried about.
“We have many ways to ensure a pain-free experience,” she
says. “We often use a topical or local anaesthetic, and also
offer tools and techniques for added comfort.”
1. Aesthetic treatments will make my
face look unnatural
“Medical aesthetic treatments are designed to enhance and
rejuvenate one’s facial features to get a natural look,” says Dr
Nowbuth. But, in order to achieve optimal results, she says
that the treatment should always be performed by a skilled
doctor who is registered with the HPCSA. She also stresses
the importance of a thorough consultation in which your
goals and expectations can be discussed, along with the
limitations of your chosen treatment. “Treatment should be
approached in a holistic manner,” she encourages.
4. Aesthetic treatments are only for people over
the age of 30
“Aesthetic treatments, such as medical grade skin peels and
facials, can be done as early as one’s teenage years,” says Dr
Nowbuth. “Injectable aesthetic treatments, however, should
only be performed from the age of 18 onwards.” She goes
on to say that it’s not necessary to wait until your thirties to
try aesthetic medicine. “Preventative treatments from the
mid-twenties are advisable to maintain optimum skin health
and facial form. In fact, the earlier one starts with aesthetic
treatments, the fewer procedures are required as one ages.”
5. Anyone can perform aesthetic treatments
In South Africa, only medical professionals registered by the
HPCSA are allowed to administer aesthetic treatments like
fillers, threads, anti-wrinkle injections and biostimulators.
That said, even treatments like facials, microneedling and
laser should be performed by a suitably qualified individual.
good gut health
Yoghurt and amasi – your go-to for gut health
Fermented dairy
Fermented foods are the rising stars on our grocery shelves – and yoghurt and amasi When it comes to fermented dairy
are South African favourites.
products, there are many options
Amasi is a proud part of our country’s food heritage and has substantial cultural to choose from: drinkable products
importance. Using Amasi is also a great way to boost the nutritional value of your or spoonable forms, and products
diet, and is convenient, easy to store and affordable. Having amasi and yoghurt
with different amounts of fat and
regularly also supports the recommendation of the South African food-based dietary protein. For example, you can
guidelines that encourages us to ‘have milk, maas and yoghurt every day’.
choose yoghurt with between
So, why the focus on fermented foods? Because they’re good for gut health!
0.5% and 6.3% fat, or have a plain or
flavoured dairy snack.
Opting for plain yoghurt and
adding fresh fruit is better than
having a sweetened product. In
this way, you limit your intake
of added sugar and at the same
time ensure that you up your fibre
intake and get lots of vitamins.
Yoghurt can be used as an easy
lunchbox filler for everyone in your
family. It helps to keep you going
between meals, can be used to
make a salad dressing or sauces, or
be the basis of a complete meal.
For breakfast, why not try yoghurt
blended with fresh fruit for an onthe-go
smoothie, or have a poached
apple and yoghurt sprinkled with
some cinnamon as a healthy dessert.
You can enjoy amasi as an anytime
favourite, either on its own as a drink
or in food. Keep it simple and pour
it over pap for a quick start to your
morning, stir it into soup or a sauce
for a creamy dinner treat, or use it as
a recovery drink after exercise.
Go to www.rediscoverdairy.co.za/
recipes/ for more ideas on how to
make yoghurt and amasi part of a
healthy, balanced diet.
What is fermentation and why
is it good for you?
Fermented foods are made by
adding beneficial microbes (friendly
bacteria), such as lactic acid bacteria
and certain moulds and yeasts, to
food during processing. It changes
a food or beverage in unique and
beneficial ways.
There are about 140 trillion bacteria in
your gut, which help to digest food,
produce vitamins, protect you against
disease-causing microorganisms
and help support your immune
system. In addition to the health
benefits of fermentation, the process
also prolongs the shelf life of a food
product through preservation, which is
an important factor in food safety.
Fermented foods for a healthy gut
The best known benefit of having
fermented foods is probably their positive
effect on gut health if consumed daily. A
poor diet, stress and taking medication
like antibiotics or having anaesthesia
can substantially affect the diversity of
bacteria that make up the collection of
microbes in your gut. Because fermented
foods contain healthy bacteria, they
are a source of live and active cultures.
Making these foods part of your diet
regularly can help to restore the
balance in the gut. Moreover,
studies have shown that
having fermented foods
and beverages often can
increase the number of
microbes in your gut
10 000 times.
imone is one of those people who looks
effortlessly stylish. So, it comes as no surprise
that it is her own aesthetic that largely informs
her label BySi. Her collections are all about
high-quality fabrics, relaxed fits and simple
looks that can be dressed up or down.
Simone has always been drawn to creative
pursuits. She spent much of her childhood
dancing, and loved art at school. She ended up
studying management accounting at university, but
after a gap year of work and travel – she spent some
time in Mauritius and Portugal – she decided to return
home and start her own company. She reminisces
about playing dress-up as a child and says that she has
always loved fashion. So, she taught herself to sew and
over the last three years, has grown her business to
include a number of collections for women, as well as a
range of accessories.
Simone describes herself as an introvert, but says
that she loves how unique clothes can make her feel
confident. She draws much of her inspiration from
global trends, but it’s important to her that she designs
items that she herself would want to wear. “I’ve been
lucky enough to travel and see how much fashion there
is out there,” she says. “The brand is all about comfort.
Since Covid, I can’t imagine putting on a pair of skinny
jeans,” she laughs. “I do a lot of matching sets because
they’re so easy to wear.”
Most of her items are loose-fitting and she usually uses
fabrics that are lightweight and low-maintenance.
Above all, she wants her clothes to make people feel
good. To keep things unique and fresh, she makes a
limited number of each of her styles and doesn’t often
repeat a collection. Some of her most popular designs
so far have included a plisse set in emerald green, navy
and creamy pink; as well as a leopard print set. Simone
loves the creativity that her line of work affords her –
designing new items, choosing fabrics, putting together
photoshoots, and styling. She has also recently started
doing some professional modelling, and is enjoying the
opportunity the work has given her to meet – and learn
from – others in the fashion industry.
Simone loves running a business on the North Coast.
“It’s small enough that people support each other,”
she says. “I also love that it’s so relaxed and people are
friendly.” When she’s not working, she enjoys staying
fit, walking her two dachshunds and spending time
with her family. She currently stocks a few shops in
Umhlanga and Cape Town, and her showroom in
Mount Edgecombe is open by appointment. She also
hosts a sip and shop event at her studio once a month
for those who would like to pop in for a browse and a
glass of bubbles.
A welcome retreat
Stepping into Kico Life Wellness Hub is like being transported to a slice of Balinese
heaven. Jennifer Campbell was lucky enough to experience some of what the gorgeous
space has to offer.
Set just one road back from the beach
in a beautiful house, Kico Life boasts
an incredible sea view from its outdoor
seating area. Inside, each room has
been thoughtfully decorated in an
eclectic, but tasteful style. A newcomer
to the growing Ballito wellness scene,
the centre is the culmination of hard
work and passion for three friends:
Cayli Varejes, Devon Lailvaux and
Courtney Hunt. Their vision is to create
a space where people can come
together to relax, take time out for
self-care and look after their overall
health in a setting that doesn’t feel
intimidating or medical.
Devon started his journey into
wellness through rugby. “Aspiring
to be an elite athlete taught me a
lot about the body, mind belief and
our potential,” he explains. “I started
exploring natural approaches to
health and wellness using plant
medicines, which helped me
significantly. I’ve found a passion for
helping people find the tools they
need to unlock their potential to have
a better quality of life.”
Cayli, on the other hand, describes
herself as a free spirit with a gypsy
soul. She has been involved in what
she calls the spiritual and alternative
community her whole life. “I started
meditation at the age of 4 and only
grew from there,” she says. “I love
to travel and meet others in this
community, gaining knowledge
and sharing the incredible life which
alternative wellness has gifted me.”
While Devon and Cayli have been
interested in health for as many years,
Courtney’s path has been a little
different. She was diagnosed with
stage three breast cancer in 2019 at
the age of 25, an experience that she
says forced her to find an entirely
new perspective on the life she wants
to live. “I am purpose-driven to seek
growth, help others and honour the
body which fought hard to allow me
to do so. I live for sunrises, adventure
and the people walking this journey
alongside me.”
Kico Life offers a range of services –
there’s a gym and yoga room, a café,
ice baths, sauna, hyperbaric chamber,
and rooms for massage and ozone
therapy. Eager to fully embrace the
intention of the wellness studio, I
started the experience with an ice
bath. Guided by Kico’s lovely Robyn,
I began by learning the proper
breathing technique necessary to
prepare the body for cold water
immersion before stepping into what
is essentially a freezer of nine-degree
water. To say it was a shock to the
system would be an understatement,
but with Robyn’s help, I stayed
focused on the benefits of the
technique and managed to stay
submerged for the recommended
three minutes. Research suggests
that ice baths help to reduce muscle
pain and soreness and decrease
inflammation – unsurprisingly, the
practise is proving particularly popular
with runners on the North Coast.
There are three ice baths available at Kico Life, the coldest
of which is three degrees. All of them are set up in an
outdoor space that’s ideal for small groups to enjoy
together.
Next, a session in the sauna was a welcome – and relaxing
– treat. The sauna is set up in a private bathroom, where
it’s possible to shower or enjoy a herbal bath afterwards.
After a 30-minute session, it was onto ozone therapy, a
treatment in which ozone gas is administered to the body
while seated and zipped into a protective covering. The
aim of ozone therapy is to increase the amount of oxygen
in the body in order to promote healing and support the
immune system through cell regeneration.
After a 20-minute treatment, during which I was able
to look out over Salmon Bay and beyond through big,
one-way glass windows, I was welcomed to the massage
therapy room. The room is beautifully designed with
soft lighting and tasteful décor and my therapist Steph
made me feel completely at ease, tailoring her massage
techniques to my particular needs.
Feeling completing rejuvenated, there was time for a
freshly-blended smoothie on an outdoor couch. Besides
a selection of healthy drinks, the kitchen also whips up a
small menu of nourishing meals, which can be enjoyed in
the café or outside.
“I would love people to use this space to come together
and relax,” says Courtney. And, with its exquisite setting,
range of wellness services and attention-to-detail, it’s easy
to imagine the centre becoming just that – a place to
regroup, unwind and focus on well-being.
ichie has been working behind a bar since
he was 19 years old. Bartending started as a
way to save money and travel, but what he
didn’t realise when he first started out was
that his work would lead him on adventures
around the world. While travelling across
Asia, he bartended as he went, spending
time in India, Thailand and Cambodia.
During this experience, he learnt skills that
have since allowed him to embark on a
career that he loves.
Originally from north London, Richie has been in
South Africa for almost three years. “I decided to come
over here to pursue new opportunities,” he says.
“It’s been the greatest move! It’s beautiful here.”
Alchemy has given Richie a platform to really
elevate his career, and he says he has learnt a lot
from being part of the team and having so much
creative freedom. Although he isn’t formally trained
in mixology, Richie says he has been able to pursue
a passion. “It’s more than just putting things into
a shaker,” he laughs. “There’s a technical side to it
too. When it comes to making the ingredients and
understanding flavour, there’s a lot of science and
chemistry that goes into the process. I really like
that aspect. I love engaging both of my passions –
mixology and the social aspect of drinking – and this
lets me fuse them together.”
Richie comes up with new and interesting cocktail
recipes himself and says he enjoys this creative
process. “I can’t draw or write very well, so my creative
outlet is making cocktails,” he says. “Often, I’ll just have a
zen moment of clarity and see something that inspires
me. Sometimes, I’ll just wake up with an idea and I’ll
want to see how it goes. It’s a lot of trial and error.”
To get us ready for our own masterclass, Richie
set us up with everything we would need to learn
some skills and create some tasty drinks – a shaker,
Hawthorne strainer, fine strainer, stirring spoon
and jigger. He guided us through the step-by-step
process of making three different cocktails – a
refreshing grapefruit mocktail, a spiced lychee sour
and a spiced cassia daquiri.
When it comes to whipping up the perfect cocktail,
Richie says there are a few things to consider – first, your
drink must look, smell and taste good. And, it’s all about
balancing sweet, sour and alcohol for a flavour that’s just
right. His suggestion for making cocktails at home is to
always try and invest in good quality ingredients. “Your
cocktail can only be as good as your worst ingredient,”
he says. Richie gave us plenty of tips and tricks along the
way, but his key message was simple: making your own
cocktails should be fun. “Don’t take it too seriously,” he
says. “At the end of the day, if you enjoy something, drink
it and keep playing. Don’t feel like there are really strict
rules that you have to stick to.”
Jamie and the Med!
Minimum fuss. Maximum flavours. Jamie Oliver’s latest cookbook
will have you whipping up a Med feast every night of the week.
Enjoy one of his recipes ... a (delish) taste of what’s in the book!
Jamie’s most popular cookbook goes Mediterranean in this
mouth-watering follow-up. 5 Ingredients Mediterranean is
everything people loved about the first book, but with the added
va-va-voom of basing it on Jamie’s lifelong travels around the
Med. It will, he hopes, give you a real sense of the countries, cities
and islands that he’s been to throughout his travels over the past
25 years. WIth more than 125 utterly delicious, easy-to-follow
recipes, this book is all about making everyday cooking superexciting,
with minimal fuss. A little more than half the recipes
are meat-free or meat-reduced, all are big and bold on flavour.
Soups and salads and sarnies, pies and parcels, seafood and fish
and chicken and meat, as well as lovely sweet things ... they’re all
achievable by even the most timid of cooks, and are, says Jamie,
a celebration of hero Mediterranean ingredients, flavours and
combinations. Penguin, R540.
Easy fig tart
Fruit & nut base, vanilla yoghurt & honey.
Take the fuss out of creating a showstopping
dessert with this super-quick
no-cook fig tart – a delicate base of
crushed fruit and nuts, topped with
yoghurt, figs and a drizzle of honey.
Serves 8 • Total time 10 minutes, plus chilling
300g luxury fruit and nut mix, 500g Greek
yoghurt, 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste,
1 teaspoon runny honey, plus extra to
serve, 4 perfectly ripe figs
Line a 20cm springform cake tin with
grease-proof paper. Tip the fruit and nuts
into a food processor and blitz until fine
and tacky (it should be easy to mould
with your hands), then push and press
it into the base of the lined tin, and
2.5cm up the sides. Leave to firm up in
the freezer for 1 hour. When the time’s
up, mix the yoghurt with the vanilla and
1 teaspoon of honey, then spoon into
the chilled tart case. Freeze for 1 further
hour, or until slightly set. Release the tart
from the tin, halve or quarter the figs
and arrange nicely on top, then drizzle
generously with honey to finish.
ADVERTORIAL
AFFORDABLE DESIGN
With a little expert input, it’s possible to create a stylish interior without breaking the bank.
Ballito-based interior designer Margaret Berichon has a passion for creating beautiful
spaces. She believes that excellent design can be affordable. In fact, hiring an interior
designer should save you time and money. Her and her team help their clients
prevent costly mistakes by using reliable tradesmen and builders; avoiding mistakes
during the construction process; integrating existing furniture into a space; defining
a suitable style; negotiating better pricing of fittings and fixtures; and understanding
how to use a budget correctly.
Margaret’s top tips
• In spaces like the kitchen, reduce
drawers and opt for cupboards
instead. This saves on hardware, as
well as labour costs.
• Use veneers instead of solid wood in
low-use items.
• There is a difference between
cheap and affordable. Choose good
quality fabrics and finishes to avoid
replacement costs.
• Remember that a well-designed
home increases the value of your
property. When it is time to sell, no
one will buy your home because you
might have some good furniture.
Finishes are key to profit.
• Good design takes time. Don’t buy
an item of furniture just because
you need it now, rather wait for the
perfect piece before investing.
• Balance high and low-end materials.
• Closets, bathrooms and finishes
such as flooring are the best items
to spend your money on as they will
add value to your build or renovation.
Ballito’s besties
For many of us, our
four-legged friends are
a source of comfort,
humour and friendship.
We chatted to three
North Coast locals
about their dogs and
the role they play in
their lives…
THE INTERNATIONAL TRAVELLER
Loca is definitely one of our community’s most well-travelled hounds.
Although she now lives her best life chasing crabs on Ballito’s beaches, she
had a sad start nine years ago in the island nation of Taiwan. A six-week-old
Loca was found alone near an ancient temple at Fulong Beach, whimpering
and cuddling her lifeless brother who had been struck by a vehicle. Peter
Kowalski, a Canadian studying sea turtles in Taiwan at the time, took her in.
But how did she end up on KZN’s north coast? Well, it turns out Peter was
lucky enough to meet both Loca and his South African wife, May, at the very
same beach! Unfortunately, getting Loca into SA was a major challenge due
to strict animal importation regulations. A great deal of time, money, stress,
and logistics were involved, including couriering a sample of Loca’s blood
on ice from Taiwan to Johannesburg overnight. “Worth every minute and
cent”, says Peter.
Loca is a “Taiwan earth dog”, a mix between Taiwan’s indigenous hunting
breed and whatever happened to be wandering the street when she was
conceived. So… a Taiwanese street dog. Despite Loca looking like your
typical African street dog (or “Africanis”) at first glance, Peter and May often
get stopped on the promenade by locals asking what breed Loca is. True to
her Taiwanese hunting dog heritage, Loca’s favourite treat is braised pork
rice, with her cunning nemesis being the vervet monkey.
THE LOYAL COMPANION
Jenna Eaton, a Ballito-based teenager with autism spectrum
disorder (ASD), has a special bond with her dog Tiggy. Early
last year, Jenna’s mom Paula found out about the benefits
that an autism support dog could provide and submitted an
application through the South African Guide Dogs Association.
“The organisation has a very thorough process of matching
dogs that are in training, and once a match has been identified,
the family goes through extremely thorough training to take on
the support dog,” Paula explains.
A few months later, the family received Tiggy. “The trainer felt
Tiggy was a great match for Jenna, especially in the role of
autism support as opposed to her fulfilling a traditional service
dog role,” says Paula. “There are also age limits to receiving
support dogs, so getting her this soon has been a blessing!”
Since receiving Tiggy, the family has learnt a lot as she goes
everywhere with them. “We have to think through all our
movements and holiday plans to ensure she is included,” says
Paula. “She comes with lots of responsibility to maintain her
training and ensure she fulfils her role. Of course, she also needs
her free time and exercise too. She has become intertwined in
our lives and has been a beautiful addition to our family.”
Jenna and Tiggy’s relationship has grown immensely over the
past year. “We are extremely happy with the companionship
that Tiggy provides our daughter,” says Paula. “Being an autistic
teenager poses challenges with social abilities, friendship circles
and the lack of diverse opportunities and experiences that her
peers experience. Tiggy brings her much comfort, love and
companionship. We believe this is a fundamental human need
and are eternally grateful for this opportunity.”
THE RESTAURANT MANAGER
If you’ve been to Jimbo’s Burger Bar in Ballito, you would
have met Vato, the friendly four-legged restaurant
manager. Sadly, Vato recently passed away, but he
still holds a special place in his owner James Harvey’s
heart. A rescue AmStaf, Vato was five months old
when James adopted him. James was going through a
break-up and staying at a friend’s house when he saw
Vato up for adoption. “I thought, what are the chances
they’ll choose me? The blue-eyed boy had hundreds
of applications. They came for a home check and
chose me to be his dad.” Originally called Rocky Blue,
James changed his name to Vato, which means dude
in Spanish slang, as soon as he picked him up. “I very
rarely went anywhere without him,” says James. “I always
referred to him as my soul dog.”
James’ bestie spent most of his time at the restaurant.
“He mostly headed up guest relations,” jokes James. “His
important role was to check the customers were happy
with their burgers, but he did tend to hang around
certain tables a bit too long!”
The AmStaf breed is often misunderstood as a fighting
dog. Vato, however, was anything but aggressive. “He
was very social,” says James. “He would sit next to me all
day and paw me until I tickled his chest and tummy.”
Plant with purpose
Maximise your garden with multi-purpose plants and take care of unwanted pests
Text: ALICE COETZEE
Mexican Mint Marigold (Tagetes lucida) is a new arrival
on the herb scene. Its other name is Mexican tarragon.
The strongly flavoured leaves are sweeter than French
tarragon and have a liquorice/anise fragrance. This hardy
perennial herb is also more heat and drought tolerant than
traditional tarragon.
It is compact and bushy, 30 to 60cm high and thrives in
full sun in ordinary garden soil. Grow from seed and water
young plants regularly until they are established. Thereafter
water deeply once a week in summer to ensure plenty of
lush, edible leaves. Harvest the individual leaves or sprigs. It
flowers from summer through to the beginning of winter.
The plant forms a clump that can be divided after two to
three years.
Chop and add the fresh leaves to sauces, salads, soups and
chicken dishes. Make a tarragon pesto for spicy Mexican
dishes and pasta. The leaves can be dried but don’t have
quite the same intense flavour. Add the flowers to salads
or use as a garnish. Seeds are available from Kirchhoffs.
We’re planting… Petunia ‘Cherry
Sky’ for its festive, cherry-red blooms,
flecked with white, and because
it’s a hardy petunia that thrives in
the heat. This semi-trailing novelty
petunia is the newest member of
the Instagrammable SKY family
and produces mounds of colourful
blooms for containers, hanging
baskets and in the garden. Mix it
with the original indigo-blue Night
Sky petunias for a real colour splash.
Plant in full sun, or in a position that
receives morning sun and afternoon
shade, especially for container plants.
Don’t overwater and feed once a
month with liquid plant feed or
fertiliser to keep up the flower power.
Garden tasks for November
• There is still time to sow a second
crop of quick growing annuals like
alyssum, dwarf marigolds, nasturtiums,
portulaca, and California poppy.
• Perennials such as yarrow, hollyhocks,
blue marguerite, Michaelmas daisy,
Oriental poppy, Penstemon, and
scabious can be sown from seed too.
• Feed hydrangeas once a month and
water more often if it gets very hot.
Renew mulch around shrubs, roses,
and any area where the soil is exposed.
• November is the peak time for
pests. Use an organic insecticide like
Ludwig’s Insect Spray as soon as you
notice insect infestation. Spray once a
week until the pests are gone.
• Succession sowing of most
vegetables can be continued up until
the end of this month.
• To prevent fungus diseases in the
lawn, do not water during the hottest
time of the day. Rather water early in
the morning or late afternoon.
The Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) is a much-loved indoor plant, lush and leafy
green, compact and undemanding. It’s always been a stellar performer with
the additional quality of being an effective air purifier. But did you know
that there are more than one variety of peace lily, in particular the bigleaved
Spathiphyllum ‘Sensation’, that grows up to 2m high and with deeply
ribbed leaves can be almost 1m long. Because of their large leaf mass, such
plants are particularly effective as air purifiers. Like all other Spathiphyllum,
‘Sensation’ grows in moderate to bright indirect light and needs lightly
moist soil. Details: lvgplant.co.za
COASTAL
LIVING
This beautiful home in Zululami Luxury Coastal Estate
is all about texture and comfort. Interior designer
Samantha Clayton lets us in on her process of creating a
relaxed and stylish space.
estled in one of the North Coast’s most sought-after estates, this home
blends in beautifully with the natural environment. So, when it came
to designing the interior, Samantha wanted to draw on the outdoor
scenery and bring something of nature inside. To do so, she used shades of blue
and green throughout the space, and incorporated materials like wood and
stone. “Working with natural textures and tones and allowing the colour to flow
from the outside in enabled me to create a cohesive atmosphere,” she explains.
When coming up with the overall design and concept for this home, Samantha
says that she wanted it to have a broad appeal. As a new build, no one had
lived in the space before so she had the chance to work with a blank canvas, an
exciting prospect for any designer. “The options were endless in terms of layout
and functionality and there were no boundaries or requirements,” she says.
Samantha chose to accentuate the space by using big furniture items,
including an L-shaped sofa in the living room and a live edge table in the
outdoor entertainment area, both of which were custom-made and oversized.
“This really shows off the space the home has to offer, as well as the size of this
home,” she says.
November 23 Get It Ballito•Umdloti•Umhlanga 57

One of the design elements that
Samantha made sure to consider
was texture – something she says is
often overlooked. “Live edge solid
wood pieces give the home a sense
of natural living and really adds to
the coastal living style,” she explains.
“I used a grass cloth wallpaper to
showcase the high ceilings and to
add a sense of warmth to the space.”
The main objective of Samantha’s
design was to create a space that felt
accessible and easy to live in. “My goal
was to create a home that feels like a
space you could see yourself living in,”
she says.
SUMMER
DAZE
Text: JENNIFER CAMPBELL
It’s a slow road to Sodwana Bay, but most travellers would agree
that this beautiful spot on the east coast is well worth the journey.
estled in the wilderness of iSimangaliso Wetland Park,
Coral Divers is a welcome sight after a four-hour drive
from Ballito. Rustic, but comfortable wooden cabins are
set in an area of unspoilt coastal forest. After settling
into our chalet, we enjoyed a sundowner on the deck
while red duiker, mongoose and crested guinea fowl roamed the
gardens and mischievous Samango monkeys played in the trees
above us. In the evening, dinner – a wholesome spread of roast
chicken, salads and veggies – was served in a communal dining
area. Every evening a buffet dinner is available, but for those who
prefer a self-catering option, there’s a modern, fully-equipped
kitchen available with everything you need to rustle up a meal, as
well as a braai area and restaurant. With full tummies, we enjoyed
a drink under the full moon, acutely aware that we were far from
the bright lights of the city. There is something truly magical
about staying in the park, away from the hustle and bustle of
town and with the relaxed atmosphere of a remote bush camp.
The beach is a short drive from the resort, and as
we were treated to beautiful weather, we took the
opportunity to wander down to Jesser Point, the
rocky point from which the dive boats launch. At
low tide, it’s a beautiful spot for snorkelling, as well
as for exploring shallow rock pools. The marine
life is rich, and we spent the morning adventuring
in and out of the water. After some exercise and
plenty of sea air, we had worked up an appetite
and decided to pop into the nearby restaurant at
Mseni Beach Lodge.
Stepping outside in the morning, we were greeted with the sound
of birdsong in every direction. In fact, the area is well-loved for its
birdlife and being in the protected Sodwana Bay National Park, Coral
Divers is home to a wide range of flora and fauna, including turacos,
green coucal and collared sunbirds. After a delicious breakfast
buffet, we set off to explore the resort – there are two training pools
for those who would like to complete their PADI certification or a
refresher course, as well as a splash pool, a small play area for kids, TV
lounge, bar and pretty gardens with picnic tables under the trees.
With big windows, plenty of natural light and an unrivalled
sea view, it’s an easy place to while away a few hours. There’s
something for everyone on the menu – from tapas and salad
to pizza and vegan dishes – but we enjoyed some Sodwanastyle
seafood, including grilled fish, prawns and calamari.
We were even lucky enough to spot some whales splashing
close to the shore from our table on the shady deck.
Sodwana Bay is perhaps most famous for its world-class
diving and the nature reserve lies next to Africa’s most
southern coral reefs. After a quick refresher in the morning
with one of the resort’s dive masters, we set off for Two Mile
Reef. The reef is a short boat ride from the shore and boasts
incredible topography, including dramatic overhangs,
coral gardens and shallow caves. It’s alive with marine life,
including white tip reef sharks, rays and turtles. We were
lucky enough to encounter an octopus showing off, as well
as a huge honeycomb moray eel and an impressive potato
bass. With visibility of around 15 metres, it was possible to
see some beautiful details and pretty creatures like peacock
mantis shrimps, porcelain crabs and colourful nudibranchs.
Coral Divers has a gazebo set up on the beach, so after
surfacing there was time for coffee and a snack before heading
out to the second dive of the day, this time to Four Buoys,
also on Two Mile reef. With even better visibility of around 20
metres, we spotted an amazing variety of fish and some really
incredible corals. The dive operation was seamless – everything
from booking a refresher to arranging a dive and borrowing
equipment was super-easy and the team was approachable
and always ready to help.
After a morning of diving, we spent the afternoon relaxing
under the white milkwoods back at camp before wandering
back to Mseni for one last cocktail and a final glimpse at the
whales just off shore. From the deck, we could see unspoilt
natural bush, pristine beach and an endless sea… there
really is something unique about this stretch of the Elephant
Coast, and there’s no doubt that we’ll be back again.
