New Zealanders love pets, and we are
among the world leaders in pet ownership.
Unsurprisingly, they are a big part of our
families, so losing your pet can be very
distressing for owners. The number of posts
on local social media shows it happens
frequently in Selwyn. Here’s a guide to help
you through this challenging time:
Keep your contact details up-to-date on
the microchip register and the council’s
dog registration database. Any found pets
can be scanned for a microchip or dog
registration tags checked at vets or the
SPCA.
Cats love to find a hidey-hole, so check
cupboards, sheds, garages, couch linings
and bed bases. Check your property
thoroughly, including under bushes and
decks. Place familiar items like your pet’s
bed, blanket, litter tray and their favourite
food outside to attract them back. Call your
animal when it’s quiet at night; shaking
treats may entice them back.
Visit your neighbours, knock on doors
in surrounding streets, and tell them about
your pet. If possible, show them a photo of
your pet and ask them to check their garden
sheds, garages, or other hiding spots. Share
your pet’s details on community notice
boards, local shops, and cafes.
Use the power of social media to spread
the word on your local community pages
and ask friends to share your posts. Also,
post your lost pet details on the dedicated
lost and found pages on Facebook.
The SPCA lists all stray animals in their
care on www.lostpet.co.nz, a national
database. You can check the “found”
listings and create a personal “lost” listing.

Create a flyer with a clear picture and
description, with your contact details. Put
the flyer in neighbours’ letter boxes and ask
if you can display a flyer on business and
community notice boards, supermarkets,
libraries, community centres and pet stores.
Visit all local vet clinics to give them
a flyer, and contact other organisations
dealing with stray animals or rescues. Also,
contact the District Council as a wandering
or stray dog may have been impounded.
Animals can wander for quite a distance,
so if you’ve recently moved house, your pet
might have tried to find their way to their
previous home. If possible, talk to the new
occupants and your old neighbours, give
them a flyer with your contact details and
ask them to check their properties.
Be persistent in your search, be patient
and don’t give up hope. Some lost pets
can turn up months later. Be proactive
and enlist local support and the power of
social media. The effort will undoubtedly
be worth it if you are reunited with your
beloved pet.
