<strong>Selwyn</strong>’s older drivers<br />
Keeping independence is especially<br />
important for the well-being of older<br />
people in our community. Waka Kotahi<br />
confirms, “Older drivers are involved in<br />
fewer crashes than other age groups. They<br />
tend to drive conservatively, travel fewer<br />
kilometres than other drivers and restrict<br />
their driving to times and situations<br />
in which they feel safe.” However, with<br />
age and illness, changes in memory and<br />
thinking occur, increasing the risk of older<br />
drivers being involved in crashes. The<br />
<strong>Selwyn</strong> District Council, in conjunction<br />
with Age Concern and Waka Kotahi,<br />
offers a free “Staying Safe” course for<br />
drivers over 65 to make sure mature<br />
drivers can continue driving safely and for<br />
as long as possible.<br />
The Driving Skills Refresher Course<br />
is designed to increase the safety and<br />
confidence of older people while driving<br />
and give seniors a chance to keep up to<br />
date with the road code and any changes<br />
to the road rules. This relaxed and<br />
informal workshop will be informative,<br />
with interactive presentations and<br />
questions answered.<br />
The workshop will:<br />
• refresh your knowledge of the road<br />
rules and go over any new changes<br />
• encourage you to think about how,<br />
where and when you drive<br />
• give you the opportunity to discuss<br />
and ask questions about everyday driving<br />
situations and conditions<br />
When did you last have a refresher<br />
course for your driving? The next course<br />
(free) will be held on Tuesday the 28th<br />
of November, 10am–2pm at the Darfield<br />
Recreation and Community Centre.<br />
Lunch is provided, and there will be the<br />
opportunity to book free driving lessons.<br />
