Growing waitlists for
IMMUNISE: Professor Helen Petousis-Harris says
combination vaccines are likely to start appearing.
asymptomatic or mild infections.
“They started off with a hiss
and roar because they were quite
well-matched to those circulating
variants,” she said.
“As that shifted, the ability to
prevent initial infection in the
first place – that was what you
saw wane first, and then the
ability to prevent mild disease,
whereas you see that protection
against more severe disease
holding.”
She says there’s a lot of work
going on to get better vaccine
solutions.
“These are things like
intranasal vaccines – so vaccines
you sniff – or skin patches . . .
you want them in your upper
respiratory tract to catch that
virus as soon as it appears. So
we’re likely to see that sort of
thing coming along, hopefully (in
the) near rather than far future
now.
“And that of course has got that
spillover for other respiratory
infections as well. Covid’s not
the only game in town. Influenza
causes us grief every year, along
with other respiratory viruses.”
Petousis-Harris says there
could be combination vaccines –
attacking several viruses in one
shot – in coming years.
BOYS AND girls are unable to
join Scout groups in the district
due to not enough leaders.
Scout groups in Lincoln,
Rolleston, Ellesmere, Darfield
and West Melton have up to 50
youth on their waiting lists.
Said Selwyn zone leader Tracy
Webster: “Selwyn being a highgrowth
area, there are more
youth wanting to attend and
we don’t have enough leaders to
take the youth off the list.”
Webster said the number
waiting “varies between the
groups and the sections” with
some having less than 10 while
others have significantly more.
“Recently there have been
leaders having to leave the movement
due to other commitments,
and with the rise in youth in the
district, we need to reach out to
the wider community to replace
these leaders,” she said.
“To become a leader, you need
to be over the age of 18 and
be able to complete and pass
a police check. There is some
training required once you have
received your warrant.
“Leaders also get to have fun
too.”
GOOD TIMES: Scouts at the Leeston Christmas parade.
There are five sections in the
Scout movement: Keas for ages
five-to-eight, Cubs for ages
eight-to-11, Scouts for ages 11-
to-14, Venturers for ages 14-to-
18, and Rovers for ages 18-to-26.
Leaders participate in a
variety of activities, such as
weekly meet-ups, camping,
fun days, and organising and
supporting decision-making.
Said Ellesmere scout leader
Rachael Carruthers: “I have
been a leader for about nine
years – my eldest son had a
fabulous time in the Kea
section.
“My youngest is now in the
venturer category; we’ve stayed
for so long because scouting
really is that much fun.
“Being a leader gives you a bit
of a buzz, and the opportunity
to give back to your community
and become a fundamental part
of children’s development.
“You also get to hang out with
some very cool people and gain
a sense of accomplishment.”
Scouts offer children the
chance to learn about the
outdoors, music, games and
crafts, while gaining valuable
leadership skills and selfconfidence
– all while having
fun.
